besides the fact that michael cera is in it, i think if you watched juno for a number of reasons, you'll watch this too... for the exact same reasons.

398504, Looks corny as shit.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Aug-31-08 03:27 AM
I'll betcha Michael Cera acts goofy, awkward, and then falls in love with other title character, then falls back in love with his ex, then realized title character is his soulmate.

Just a hunch tho.
398506, set to a indie rock-ass soundtrack.
Posted by Doc Maestro, Sun Aug-31-08 03:37 AM
398576, Yes, it doesn't look great.
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Sun Aug-31-08 02:18 PM
But it could look like Jaws 4, and because it's a chance to see Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) directing again, I would (and will) still see it opening weekend. That guy is gonna have to do a lot wrong to leave my good graces.
401077, I liked Juno, but yeah
Posted by will_5198, Thu Sep-11-08 11:51 PM
this one just seems intolerable.

405921, Agonizingly bad.
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Oct-03-08 04:20 AM
Longest 90 minutes of the year.

It's basically a hipster "Superbad" but with 99% fewer jokes.

There are a handful of funny moments, some cutesy stuff, and a whole lot of awful.

Wow. Just bad.
405974, oh phew -- glad I read this, cuz I was curious

Yeah, I'm WHITE, I was thinking about seeing it, I can't lie, but ... I'd take your recommendation fairly seriously.

Just to make sure, quick rundown of recent polarizing teen movies, give me your final grade on them:

Garden State?
Donnie Darko?
Napoleon Dynamite?
Juno?
406024, RE: oh phew -- glad I read this, cuz I was curious

Garden State: I really liked Garden State. I'm a big fan.

Donnie Darko? I wasn't a huge fan but I thought the characters were solid, the acting was good, and part of me thought that maybe I just didn't get it. Then I watched the DVD commentary and realized that it's all a bunch of nonsense so I lost respect for it. Still, the high school stuff is good. It feels like a good teen movie hijacked by sci-fi mumbo jumbo.

Napoleon Dynamite? Never saw it.

Juno? I thought it was a good movie but it was an unrealistic teen movie, not because of the dialogue but because you never really saw her being a teen. It was like she lived in a vacuum with her parents, the adoptive parents, and Michael Cera. I don't really get upset by the dialogue. If I can enjoy a film that has Bruce Willis running around the wing of a fighter jet and launching cars into helicopters, I can deal with a too-witty-for-her-age kid. Still, I don't get why people went crazy about it. "Saved" is a much better movie IMO.
406076, haha -- thanks, I'd agree with pretty much all of that
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-03-08 05:39 PM
I was curious about this Nick and Norah movie on a purely guilty pleasure level, but if you say it's 90 minutes you'd rather have back, I'll wait until it's a rental.
406298, well that pretty much condemns your level of taste

406073, Not a hipster Superbad . . . a Disney After Hours.
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Fri Oct-03-08 05:28 PM
A whole lot of what didn't work I put on the script and a painfully apathetic performance from Michael Cera. There were a couple moments of character development that weren't contrived and aprox. half a dozen jokes that weren't obvious, but by and large the script was a mess. At the same time, I didn't hate it. Even quite liked it periodically. But looking back, those points which I liked likely would not have stood out on the page, e.g., the shots of New York City and a couple "performance" scenes that I won't spoil. In those instances, the movie trusted itself and worked. They however were matched by a few reaching wince-inducing sequences.

All that being said, I think anyone who would claim it's terribly awful or terribly brilliant is saying more about themselves than the movie. It's neither one of those. It's largely average, which translates roughly to uninspiring. Obviously, that's not a recommendation, but it's not a complete pan either. It's a rental a couple weeks after it hits shelves.
406081, Any and every opinion says something about the person

Please. You say a whole lot didn't work and the script was a mess but "at the same time, I didn't hate it". How is that not saying something more about you than the movie itself?

And one of the reasons I called it a hipster's Superbad was EXACTLY because I knew people would be citing stuff like the shots of New York (or the final "I Love New York!) for why the movie wasn't bad. The movie might have been a well shot mess but it was still a mess.

I wanted to like the movie but it was boring and utterly unrealistic in terms of character, relationship, etc. I didn't think the performance pieces were funny and the cameos were both jarring and mosty unfunny.

I do think you hit the nail on the head with uninspired. I don't think this movie was average, I think it aimed at being average... and missed.
406179, +10 for the description. "Hipster Superbad", well played.

I enjoyed it.

He's funny though, like, even in Superbad, with his best friends, he was always out of place.
407815, I liked that jount.
Posted by Dae021, Tue Oct-14-08 04:26 PM
I laughed at it, and there are parts of this movie that are cringe inducing and other parts that are predictable.

it's cute, it's sort of a different sort of romance, but cool

Kat Dennings needs to UPplay her breats more next movie because those things are worth the price of admission.

Michael Cera was cool, even when he tried to get Brolic.

Alexis (whatshername) is disgustingly skinny and I'd rather not see her in another movie mayb ever.
407817, caught it this weekend. it was okay. a rental if anything though.
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Oct-14-08 04:44 PM
It's a sweet little love story. Had its funny moments.Cera was good. New York City was good. And I think they nailed the tone they were going for.

To its credit, it's not trying to be overly artsy or serve as some sort of mission statement for the myspace generation... I mean there's a couple failed attempts at "depth" but overall it was just trying to be a teen movie. I guess it did that pretty well.
407901, sucked ass nm
