396498, The Dark Knight of Steel: WB to reboot Superman, make it gritty

WB is pulling a Hulk and rebooting a character a few years after a failed reboot. The twist? This time they are going to make Superman a grittier film. Not sure that makes sense as Superman was never really edgy.

"Robinov feels that "exploring the evil side to characters" is the way to approach all the DC characters. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it." Including Superman."

Sounds like they are overreacting. Superman Returns made 200 million and was a god awful movie. If they had actually made a quality film, it could have doubled that.

(Oh, and for Orbit Established, you'll be happy to know that your Joker venom should be aimed at Jeff Robinov who, "At the script stage, Jeff really wanted us to be very clear on the Joker's lack of purpose," he says.)

The other interesting part of this story is that WB (which closed its indie arms Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures) is trimming it's releases down and focusing on big films. While that works with something like The Dark Knight, let's not forget that Warner Brothers also gave the world Speed Racer and The Invasion. I guess the thinking is that one huge success outweighs a couple of absolute bombs. And it's better to have a high quantity of blockbuster attempts so that one hits.
