394453, The Tropic Thunder movie post (SPOILERS, obviously)
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Aug-12-08 10:47 PM
Let's just get it out of the way: nah, I wasn't offended. You, personally, may be, and may decide to send a pirated copy to Spike so he can shit all over it in the press. Or, you may just be posing in the name of some inboxed sexual solicitations. Whatever floats your boat. But I personally wasn't offended.

I actually thought the performance was pretty funny, and as Longo and others have pointed out, the joke is that the guy is so full of shit that he doesn't realize that he's not portraying an "authentic" black male... something that Brandon T. Jackson reminds him of repeatedly throughout the movie...

As for others, I thought that (the extended not-really-a-surprise-by-now superstar cameo) was insane, I thought that Jack Black played a one-note role throughout (although it could be argued that they're all one-note)... I also thought that Steve Coogan, Danny McBride, and THA NOLTE could have been used a bit more than they were... Jay Baruschel was okay...

The bottom line is the movie was funny in spots but it's nothing you haven't seen done before...

... and make no mistake: some of you will be mad. I'm not. It is what it is.

Oh, and don't get there late.

The Ben Stiller "This isn't funny but my ego forces me to fail at some kind of stretch humor" shit was kept to a minimum, which was a big concern for me.

It definitely had some funny spots including the land mine, Jack Black's jonez and some genuinely funny exchanges. I felt like they did a good job at satirizing the movie machine and all of the cogs.
394504, Stiller's mugging didn't annoy me like I thought it would

That said, I wonder what someone like The Rock could have done with the role

I think that would have been significantly better.
394492, Some hilarious parts (but were people laughing for the right reasons)
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Aug-13-08 04:30 AM
The beginning of the film was great but then it slowed a bit, especially since a lot of the jokes just kept repeating. Still, a very funny film and one of the year's best IMO.

As for Downey, a number of times I was cringing like when I hear people laughing at Sarah Silverman (and what I think Chappelle felt). People were laughing more at Downey's impression than the idiocy of it. What made it readily apparent was that people were laughing out loud (dude behind me was over-the-top in his cackling) at Downey but when Brandon T. Jackson put him in his place, it was almost silent.

394531, I was surprised to read the the Robert Downey Jr 'blackface' role
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Wed Aug-13-08 10:28 AM

was actually a part of him as a character, because his character in the movie is white, but they put him in blackface, correct?
394538, Yeah

I didn't think it was that bad on the cringe meter. I thought Tom Cruise was far worse.
394546, Fuck this movie. I'm boycotting. And so should you.

I mean, maybe I shouldn't judge a movie entirely by its trailer, but from what little I did see, I was disgusted. Absolutely disgusted. How do these motherfuckers think they can get away with this shit?

And furthermore, why are WE letting them get away with it?

I don't use the "R" word very lightly, but I gotta call this one like I see it. This movie is a complete Rip-Off of Three Amigos.

Let's look at the imdb plot summary, shall we?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942385/plotsummary

Okay, so there isn't one yet. But let's examine the FACTS.

Three Actors? Check.

Foreign Country? Check.

Comedy of errors in which said three actors think they are going to be in a movie but wind up having to play their roles in real life, hijinks ensue? Check.

Complete bullshit? Why, as a matter of fact... CHECK!

394643, There is a very similar story now that you mention it
Posted by Call It Anything, Wed Aug-13-08 06:00 PM
Especially in terms of Hollywood actors who get themselves entangled in a conflict in a foreign country and they're still in actor mode only to find out that they are being shot at with real guns and then they come to embody the roles they play and turn into heroes.

It is like a 21st century update of it. Thanks for making me think of that in a different way.

Fuck it, funniest movie of the year.

It's the action comedy that other movie couldn't be.

Plus, it's probably the most creative and consistently clever satire of everything Hollywood in a long time.

And if The Soloist is even only "kinda good", then that'll make '08 an all-time great year for Downey.

CO SIGN!!!

I was in TEARS rolling over this movie. When Robert Downeys charector starts recitling the Jefferson theme song I almost lost it. People will laugh at this movie for there own reasons, during the parts when the "rapper actor" was blasting Dowenys charector, I was the only person laughing my ass off. There was about 10 people in the theator (11am showing) and I was the only black person.

That said it was mad funny and clever. The very begginng was insane with the fake commercial that seemlessly begins the movie and feels like it's real until you hear the words Pussy. I would love to watch a large audiences reaction when the movie 1st starts.

Tropic Thunder makes Pineapple Express look like Belly 2. BTW Belly 2 starring The Game was the shitastic movie of the year. WTF!?!?
394631, I have a feeling...
Posted by xbenzive, Wed Aug-13-08 04:52 PM

if Trey Parker & Matt Stone wrote the screenplay (would be much better and intelligent) people wouldn't complain about anything. Nor would they be offended.

from the trailer, I knew it was going to be a satire against Hollywood actors, but I didn't understand the offense people had. Sure it's wrong, but they're proving it's the reason why it's wrong cause their characters they portray are idiots. Idiots actors too.

Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr were the highlights for me. It definitely had the better action movie spoofing than Pineapple Express. Certain parts were certainly hilarious (especially Jack Blacks...er...offer to Brandon T Jackson), and I liked it overall, but it was fairly average.

And NOBODY but me in the theater laughed at the bologna line.

Hysterical...The kid next to me fell on the floor in tears when Stiller dropped to his knees and did that whole one handed shooting shit after he'd just put the director's head atop the barrel of the gun.

The entire cast did their thing; I have no complaints. Even Matt McConaughey was funny with his obsession with Tivo.

and it's really due to a lame script. RDJ is great though.

lotta dead time in it, lotta repetition. like the tivo thing is kinda "eh" and the tom cruise bit gets beaten to death. jack black isn't that funny either. the best stuff is in the trailers.

Don't get me wrong, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise were both fucking hilarious. The ads/previews kicked ass. And I liked the demolition guy and skinny kid that was in "Knocked Up." But most of the other shit was dumb. And I think the movie kind of fell apart as soon as Stiller got captured. Sure, there was some other funny stuff (Stiller's final escape) but it suffered from a lot of the standard comedy "life changing moments" bullshit Stiller sticks in his films.

Not awful, but I probably could have waited for the DVD.

My favorite comedy this year. That movie had me balled up in my seats on some superbad shit except this joint had intelect to ride along with it. Excellent cast for this film. Everybody did there thing and the theater absolutely loved it. The racist issues folks may have with this film were addressed in the film. This joint just made my top three films this year. I think I laughed the most during the rescue mission and bridge scene.

Highlights for me:

- Jack Black's offer to Alpa Chino
- The landmine blowing up the director
- Mattew McConaughey coming oout of nowhere and throwing the Tivo box then running into the wild (wtf? lol)
- Stiller trying to stop the heroin dealers only to come back to the bridge getting stabbed by Halfsquat
- Stiller as Simple Jack
- "I'm a lead farmer motherfucker!"
- Black taking the kid to find the heroin

395391, what's funny about the big response to this movie
Posted by BigWorm, Sun Aug-17-08 08:56 AM
Is that the media is NOT largely reporting any negative response to Robert Downey Jr.'s character.

But there was a HUGE reaction to the use of the word 'retard' in the film. Many groups have responded to it. Special Olympics is trying to get a big boycott going.

Almost like the blackface thing was totally overlooked.

I haven't seen the film yet (I will) but that's kind of funny to me.
395413, Heading into the film they reported the blackface issue.
Posted by SoulHonky, Sun Aug-17-08 11:26 AM
But then it was overtaken by the controversy over "retard" when national groups spoke out against it, demanded a boycott, and even picketed some theaters.

I thought the Tom Cruse cameo came off as odd and force until he was on the cell phone with the asian drug lord then I was use to it. Overall I think RDJ out shined Stiller. Jack Black was, well like Jack Black. The scene when he was on the tree was quite funny thought. Some parts with the director just came off as not being funny. It was a roller-coaster of laughter, at time it hit and at times it didn't but it was still fun to see. I like it and I think it did what it needed it to do. Also, I wasn't offended at all. It was a satire comedy, nothing more.

Cruise was fantastic and then Downey Jr......LMAO. Starting with Satan's Alley which had me dying throughout, and then so much stuff in the movie. The saucier shit in New Orleans, the 'being held down for 400 years' heart-felt convo, 'everyone's a little gay sometimes', and then my favorite, the initial full-retard conversation and then him praising Stiller after watching duke's performance lol.

Stiller wasn't bad, and cotdamn, was his Jack hilarious. Mathew Mc was pretty damn funny as well, esp that obsession with TIVO/DVR...I can relate lol.

Jack Black was the weakest link imo....his offer to brandon was straight comedy gold, and him biting the cracked out bat was great....but otherwise, just too predictable.

Worth watching just for the best parts....I'll rent it again because I know I didn't catch all the lines.

Finally got to see the movie. Much funnier than i thought it would be and the best satire of hollywood in ages.

Owen Wilson would have been much better in Matt McCon's role but then we all know why he had to bail out of the movie.

Jack Black who i normally can't watch did have a one note character but he smashed it.

Cruise was rather worrying. Stiller still one of the hardest person to watch in movies but the live version of Simple Jack was hilarious.

But the movie was hilarious. I might buy it on DVD when its out.

Its a comedy that pokes fun at hollywood and war movies. nothing deeper than that, that's how it should be viewed as.

I don't think so. It was funny in spots and RDJ had the best lines but this movie was overhyped. Without all of the controversy this film surely would have been no blockbuster.
Oh and the so called *offensive material*, What offensive material? This movie was pretty tame and a tad bit long. Even though the best gags come early, TT is still a worthwhile rental.
