392141, etherous reply
Posted by soundsop, Mon Aug-04-08 03:24 PM
fuck christopher hitchens, though. religion is about the only thing he's right about anymore.
392151, it's also a crutch for the weak
Posted by Basaglia, Mon Aug-04-08 04:04 PM
nm
392227, Yes. Everyone who drinks is weak. Classic Bags logic.
Posted by bignick, Mon Aug-04-08 08:43 PM
And by Bags logic, I mean stupidity.
392230, that's not what he said at all, lol
Posted by Deebot, Mon Aug-04-08 08:48 PM
392316, that hack knows what i said
Posted by Basaglia, Tue Aug-05-08 06:52 AM
392256, and everyone who believes in God is stupid...
Posted by Basaglia, Mon Aug-04-08 10:40 PM
392252, you talking about religion or booze?
Posted by soundsop, Mon Aug-04-08 10:18 PM
both i guess
392517, I was anti-alcohol for 29 years of my life....
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Tue Aug-05-08 07:05 PM
Now...

after too much hell...

I appreciate numbing myself

lol
392085, the one book i credit for finally turning me toward atheism
Posted by araQual, Mon Aug-04-08 01:00 PM
a great read. dude is too logical and smart for his own good. i think the main criticism ppl give me of the book is that it comes across as too arrogant, and not respectful of all the religions of the world. at first i thought ok that's a valid enough complaint, but then i thought....fuck that. Hitch is on the money, why should the book be toned down?

V.
392186, dawkins, harris better.
Posted by cereffusion, Mon Aug-04-08 06:06 PM
392228, I agree about Dawkins. Harris...not so much.
Posted by bignick, Mon Aug-04-08 08:44 PM
He's just not as good of a writer as the other guys.
392257, i'll never read hitchins so harris wins by default
Posted by cereffusion, Mon Aug-04-08 10:42 PM
392187, I Wonder If Bill Mahrs Movie Is Going To See The Light Of Day
Posted by Getting.Out.Our.Dreams, Mon Aug-04-08 06:07 PM
I thought it was suppose to drop in August.
392198, NOPE! God be helpin'!
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon Aug-04-08 06:41 PM
Hitchens am just mad.
392204, Dostoevsky smarter, wasn't atheist
Posted by Deebot, Mon Aug-04-08 07:04 PM
392217, I enjoyed it when he told Andrew Sullivan to stop being such a lesbian
Posted by Zeno, Mon Aug-04-08 08:12 PM
392693, holy shit, when was that?
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Wed Aug-06-08 03:02 PM
that's fucking hilarious.
392238, Hitchens gives us a bad name.
Posted by stravinskian, Mon Aug-04-08 09:07 PM
He just wants to play games. In that "Four Horsemen" discussion, he actually said he wouldn't want to live in a world without religion, because then he wouldn't have anybody to prove wrong.

Of course he was drunk when he said it, but that's hardly an excuse.
392284, lol. this is precisely why i love the dude
Posted by araQual, Tue Aug-05-08 12:07 AM
he can be drunk and still son u in a debate (see: any of the debates on youtube).

V.
392313, shame he shies away from debaters he knows will take him
Posted by tappenzee, Tue Aug-05-08 06:26 AM
392432, ? who's gonna take him?
Posted by araQual, Tue Aug-05-08 02:00 PM
even if u don't like his personality or the way in which he argues his points, his arguments are sound and backed up by logic, reason, science and facts. the dude is working with the truth as we know it, so who the hell is gonna take him on and actually succeed in making him look bad?

V.
392505, He's challenged Kissinger and Michael Moore
Posted by DrNO, Tue Aug-05-08 06:21 PM
392705, he shies away from his former protege, Dennis Perrin

392511, He's not sonning anybody. He's just line-stepping for shock value.
Posted by stravinskian, Tue Aug-05-08 06:31 PM

Find him arguing his support for the Iraq war, and you'll see how full of shit he actually is.

392581, did i mention the Iraq War at all?
Posted by araQual, Wed Aug-06-08 02:26 AM
we're talking religion ye? and his arguments are air-tight in that regard.

as for line-stepping for shock value, who cares? as long the meat of his argument is solid, which it is. his logic hasn't failed him yet far as i've seen. most ppl just seem to have a problem with him as a person. i wanna see the same ppl criticising Hitch the man attack his views on religion and god.

V.
392583, Oh, so when he talks about one thing he's a master of logical discourse,
Posted by stravinskian, Wed Aug-06-08 02:36 AM
but when he talks about another thing, he's an idiot.

Okey dokey.
392920, hahaha
Posted by cereffusion, Thu Aug-07-08 10:53 AM
393094, Do you actually read his pieces on Iraq?
Posted by DrNO, Thu Aug-07-08 06:58 PM
He attacks the Bush regime for being moronic thugs at every opportunity and attacks them for fucking up the execution of the war.

His stance is that overthrowing a tyrant, worthless extremist barbarians and introducing democracy to Iraq is a worthy cause that would not be accomplished through diplomacy.
392508, So you want to be percieved as a witless bore?
Posted by DrNO, Tue Aug-05-08 06:24 PM
392239, Sagan: The Varieties of Scientific Experience
Posted by stravinskian, Mon Aug-04-08 09:12 PM

http://www.amazon.com/Varieties-Scientific-Experience-Personal-Search/dp/0143112627/

That's the book.

Dawkins is good, too.
392312, most etherous thing i've read on religion is the original sin speech
Posted by The Damaja, Tue Aug-05-08 06:12 AM
in Atlas Shrugged
392491, RE: most etherous thing i've read on religion is the original sin speech
Posted by Getting.Out.Our.Dreams, Tue Aug-05-08 05:37 PM
is that hitchens?
392507, Ayn Rand
Posted by DrNO, Tue Aug-05-08 06:23 PM
who Hitchens, and sane people, despise.
392522, Doesn't mean she wasn't a great writer
Posted by Wrongthink, Tue Aug-05-08 07:50 PM
392822, She wasn't.
Posted by Villain, Thu Aug-07-08 12:16 AM
392855, sure
Posted by The Damaja, Thu Aug-07-08 06:11 AM
392900, you really should forget you ever read her
Posted by cereffusion, Thu Aug-07-08 09:30 AM
its bad for you.
392964, You're saying I should blank-out her arguments?
Posted by The Damaja, Thu Aug-07-08 12:33 PM
that would me highly ironic

I'm getting quite suspicious of this whole anti Rand sentiment
393000, what? she's awful. stop it.
Posted by cereffusion, Thu Aug-07-08 02:04 PM
393011, her main criticism of people is the refusal to think
Posted by The Damaja, Thu Aug-07-08 02:29 PM
to shun or 'blank-out' the logical end of an argument

like you're suggesting
393193, listen, are you still in high school?
Posted by cereffusion, Fri Aug-08-08 09:53 AM
then it's ok.

but anyone over 16 still being an ayn rand fan needs to branch out.
393083, ^never actually read Rand before
Posted by Wrongthink, Thu Aug-07-08 06:37 PM
393120, wrong. I wouldn't say anything if I hadn't.
Posted by Villain, Thu Aug-07-08 10:25 PM
Anthem, The Fountainhead, ALL of Atlas Shrugged (yes including the Galt speech) and she's a hack writer. I don't have an issue with her philosophy. She's just...not good at writing. sorry.
393178, hardly a hack
Posted by The Damaja, Fri Aug-08-08 09:00 AM
read some run-of-the-mill sci-fi or detective fiction then some Rand and there's a big difference

yes she's not the most literary prose stylist but then,
a) english is not her first language
b) do you want to turn a 1000 page novel into a 3000 page novel?

the way she was able to communicate her philosophy through fiction was masterful. in fact it's a staggering achievement
393202, There really isn't a difference in quality. Same trite characters
Posted by Villain, Fri Aug-08-08 10:12 AM
same overreliance on silly cliches.

Oh, and Atlas Shrugged might have been tolerable if it was shortened to 500 pages, cause she really didn't have 1,200 pages of material to talk about. As a work of philosophy, I don't care about it (I was actually recommended the book years ago cause ppl thought I'd agree with it), but as a work of fiction it sucks.
393328, the characters embody different philosophical outlooks
Posted by The Damaja, Fri Aug-08-08 03:48 PM
they're not meant to stand next to the work of Dickens etc.

'writing' isn't limited to the area of poetry or drama

it's like saying Socratic dialogues were stilted
392509, Hahaha. Might as well be.

392918, i don't like the religion hitchens rails against either
Posted by Iltigo, Thu Aug-07-08 10:48 AM
but i love me some jesus
393317, have you heard the Hay Festival Blasphemy Debate (2005)
Posted by Big Chief Rumbletummy, Fri Aug-08-08 02:58 PM

*

Hitch and Stephen Fry for about an hour and a half. They don't really debate each other, they don't take opposing sides anyway, so much as discuss religion. There's a great quote in there, I forget who originally said it, in reference to the concept of God, "We are created sick, and commanded to be well".

Anyone know who said that?

I've heard people blast Hitch for about 8 years now, and I admit I haven't read much of his stuff since he left The Nation but I will always love and revere him for: No One Left To Lie To, The Trial of Henry Kissinger, The Missionary Position, & The Monarchy.
