391155, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. NOPE! BLOCK THE HATE!
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-31-08 10:30 AM
Since Brendan's already made back Journey 3D's production budget, and it's still in the Top 5 at the Box Office, it's clear that the Summer of Fraser is currently on schedule.

Next up? Mummy 3.

Let's ignore the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, shall we? We saw critics lickin their chops from a mile away, writing their bad mummy-related hate puns back in June. Whether it's good or bad, I won't know til I see it. When reviews say, "The Mummy series has been dead for a long time, but like the mummies it depicts, it won't stay buried" (har har har), and "The movie feels like the direct-to-dvd version of The Mummy, complete with cheesy, already-done CG effects, and best of all, not a single actual mummy in the entire movie" (um, there are mummies IN THE TRAILER, dickwad), I know this'll be a wait-and-see flick.

But what do I know? Jet Li. Dragons. Yetis. An army of the undead. For me, regardless of how good the flick as a whole is, the shit should at bare minimum be fun.

And yes, it'll be a hit. It's the last big-budget action flick of the summer, it can ride into August. It's got a history of success behind it, and the cast has already signed a contract to do more Mummy flicks.

Did I mention dragons and yetis?

"This movie gave me a mummy ache."

"If you plan on spending time with Mummy Dearest, better stock up on wire coat hangers--you'll need them to poke your eyes out."

"Mummy mums its mummy mumminess with enough mummy mummitude to mum your mum until she mums her own mummy out of pure mummity. Mummy."

I just dunno. I already put my money towards SOF. I think I might let other folks handle this one. I've got an appointment with the doctor tomorrow because I still can't get the stink of Journey 3D off me.
391202, i seriously hate this movie
Posted by ternary_star, Thu Jul-31-08 12:23 PM
these soulless paint-by-numbers shit logs that the studios poop out every year make my stomach turn.

no joy. no risk-taking. no excitement.

just pile up a bunch of random bullshit. add a splash of cgi on top. mix in an washed-up, apathetic, b-list movie star and bake for 90 minutes.

when you see the stories movies are capable of telling and then witness imagination-sucking snore-fests like this...

the whole thing intensely depresses me.
391214, I'd say it's the Summer of Downey Jr. but...
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Jul-31-08 12:47 PM
...90 million production budget and 30 million in advertising for Tropic Thunder? That doesn't seem like a good idea. And I've heard a lot of people say they think it looks dumb. AND it's going to be arriving in the wake of the Pineapple Express which I think will get very good word of mouth.

Posted by josephmurf2384, Thu Jul-31-08 02:25 PM
Between Step Brothers and Pineapple i would pin it is another summer of Apatow, but thats just me. Tropic thunder does look awesome as well, but they will have trouble recouping i think.

it's not so pathetically bad that you want to gouge your eyes out but not great either

it's simply formulaic family fun

391784, so you and I seem to be the only two in here who've actually seen it
Posted by DubSpt, Sun Aug-03-08 01:35 AM
It wasn't offensive bad,
but there wasn't a single good element in it.
Brendan wasn't very good (and his voice sounded...... strange)
Maria Bello, godblessher, was no Rachel Weisz,
I fucking hate the son,
I have no idea how/why Jet Li lost his facial hair after he came back to life,
Jet Li wasn't the dragon nearly as much as he should have been,
I have no clue what that other thing he turned into was,
the yetis were ALMOST great,
the auxilliary stories were not interesting at all,
and it was pretty anti-climatic.

Best element:
the detail in the mummy armies. No two soldiers looked alike, and I appreciated that.

Overall,
I dozed off 3 times.
391789, yetis were the best part follwed by Michelle Yeoh and chick that
Posted by cheapskeight, Sun Aug-03-08 02:28 AM
played her daughter.
Rachel was missed but I don't blame her for avoiding this. Actually I congratulate her.

Now the son, my goodness. Where do u start?
He was waaaay too old for the part.
He had no English accent and in fact started doing Matt Damon impressions halfway through. Just horrible.

Brendan continues whoring for checks. At least he didn't annoy me.

Never been a big Jet Li fan. He made no big impression on this film. Honestly though, filling Arnold Vosloo's shoes was going to be tough any way (I mean that). Hated Russell Wong didn't get more screen time.

Not more or less than expected

this hurts me, and i'm not sure how i feel about it. true, he didn't do much in this movie, but he's been in some classic films.
392174, i'm not disputing his contribution. i just find him droll. he has zero
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Aug-04-08 05:33 PM

391957, terrible
Posted by shygurl, Mon Aug-04-08 01:38 AM
Like I know summer actions films like this are generally full of cliches, but this shit was just tired. The suburban folks around seemed to enjoy it, and my mom liked it, but I was sitting there pretty bored the whole time. Not enough Jet Li for me, the plot was too easy to anticipate, and the writing was horrible (easily worst part of the film).

Posted by poetx, Mon Dec-29-08 02:08 PM
even with my brain turned off, shit was painful.

but now i ain't as mad as the ones from egypt. its obvious that the scriptwriter(s) for the mummy franchise feel personally responsible to fuck over the history of EVERY people they encounter.

all monument building pre-western civilizations were bloodthirsty and evil. is mummy south america far off?

mummy easter island?

lol.

peace & blessings,

x.

http://thepasswordisswordfish.wordpress.com/2008/10/27/upcoming-dvd-releases-hancock-the-rocker-the-mummy-3/

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (coming December): I’m an unabashed fan of the first Mummy, a fun action romp where the special effects didn’t swallow the film’s charm. The second movie had its moments, but the fun one-liners were replaced with an annoying child actor and terribly written romantic scenes– plus, the effect of the “Scorpion King” I submit to this day is still the worst special effect in the history of big-budget action films. This film comes closer to the first movie– it attempts for humor far more often, and its special effects have some wit to them (I enjoyed the statue that came to life, ripped the stone from its face, and threw it at Brendan Fraser). It still has its flaws, such as more terrible love scenes, and a fight scene between Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh that doesn’t come close to its potential. Still, if the idea of a film with dragons, yetis, and armies of the undead fighting one another is something that makes you smile, this absolutely merits a viewing.
