387008, Blade Trilogy >>>>> Matrix Trilogy
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Jul-18-08 11:41 AM

The ratings:

Blade 1 = 7.5
Blade 2 = 8.5
Blade 3 = 4.0

= 20.0 / 3 = 6.666666667

Matrix 1 = 9.5
Matrix 2 = 3.5
Matrix 4 = 6.0

= 19.0 / 3 = 6.3333333333

And I'm being generous with 'Matrix:Revolutions'

And I'm probably slightly underscoring Blade 1

Goddamn did those Matrix sequels suck

Just...wow.

Complete trainwrecks.

DEAL WITH IT

387016, ye i agree the Matrix sequels got progressively worse
Posted by araQual, Fri Jul-18-08 11:51 AM
but then again so did the Blade ones. in the end they both sucked equally after having stellar starts.

387019, Nope, Blade 2 is definitely better than Blade.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-18-08 11:59 AM
387024, Really? I thought Blade 2 was a little overstylized
Posted by BigReg, Fri Jul-18-08 12:12 PM
In particular, the kickass vampire death squad that looked cool, but did absolutely nothing.

I did like the whole 'uber-vampire' concept and how they played it tragically.

Blade original was a nice lean straightforward machine, which is why I think its one of the GOAT's as far as comic movies are concerned.
387034, nope. it sucked. Blade Trinity sucked the worst, tho.

i almost got cooked with my own routine...lmao....hahahahahahaha. damn, i'm wack.

but, nah...i was like "fuck nah...i ain't rollin wit O on this one." then, i remembered roy jones and cornel west acting stupid.

blade was nice a fuck.

i would even venture to say that blade had better kung fu than the matrix. you know wesley is a master of them 'arts.
387026, POST JACK: What are the most complete trilogies?
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Jul-18-08 12:25 PM
Most trilogies seem to really fall apart in the third movie (X-Men, Spiderman, Blade). Bourne brought it with all three films. For the artsier side, I know that the Red, White, Blue trilogy was supposed to be great with each one. Lord of the Rings? What other trilogies have been able to maintain their quality for all three films?
387027, I'm prolly alone on this, but I love all three Back to the Futures.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-18-08 12:27 PM
The second and third are worse than the first, sure. But all three are still enormously entertaining.
387033, i've never had a problem with B2TF II & III
Posted by araQual, Fri Jul-18-08 12:39 PM
loved em all.

V.
387035, Two is the worst IMO but still solid
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Jul-18-08 12:43 PM
And I'm actually a big fan of the third one. Good call. That might be one of my top trilogies.
387117, The first half of #2 is the only down part of the whole trilogy.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-18-08 03:10 PM
The part where they are looking at all the relatives, and you can feel Zemeckis going, "Look! There's Michael J. Fox in the future! Look! There's Leah Thompson! Look! There's Biff!" It borders on boring.

But once the plot actually kicks in? And when they go back to the original flick and chase through there? Hoooo wee.
387039, if Nolan + co. ever make a 3rd Batman film...

387050, WOW!!!
Posted by Lyterall, Fri Jul-18-08 01:03 PM
The Blade trilogy. How funny. The 1st and 2nd were okay (not the greatest vampire or comic book movie ever). But the 3rd one???? F*cking terrible. So damn awfull. If it wasnt for Wesley Snipes no one would of even watched those movies. Look at the tv series with Sticky Fingaz. LMAO!!! And as far as the Matrix trilogy goes, they didnt need a 2nd or 3rd one. They should of just stopped with the 1st one. Kept fans wondering what would happen next. Film makers get greedy and thats how Trilogys are made. I did not enjoy the 2nd nor 3rd Matrix movies. They were so lame in my opinion. But, the first Matrix movie topples over the entire Blade Trilogy. Single handely. But, if Will Smith would of took the role of Neo (instead of passing on it) it would of made for a better movie. And then maybe i would of enjoyed the ones that followed.

387060, Will Smith wanted more humor in the script
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Jul-18-08 01:17 PM
I have no problem with The Matrix not including the Will Smith brand of humor which really didn't fit the Neo character in the first film. I'm not so sure if would have been a better film with Will.

Which would have fucked it up, because
Fishburne was the the best thing to
happen to the Matrix

Kilmer good, though.

did his thing in those flicks, and played Blade better than Keanu could ever dream of playing Neo. The supporting cast, and special effects is what makes the first Matrix special. The 2nd was decent. Jet Li was also a top contender for the role of Neo. He would have brought a real authenticity to it. Keanu stays bland every day all day. I rarely think he is appropriately cast in films.

I really liked Blade 2 by the way, and the first was solid.

387202, a)You're wrong about Jet Li b) Keanu Reeves was perfect
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Jul-18-08 08:09 PM

Neo is supposed to be super naive, and the ultimate
reluctant hero-who-stumbles-on-a-fortune-he didn't
ask for...Keanu's blank stares and very generic
acting was actually perfect...the character is supposed
to be in a daze the entire time, and Keanu was perfect
for that.

Jet Li was actually in discussion for the role
of the gatekeeper or whoever that asian guy was
from part 2...not Neo.

thanks for the correction regarding jet.

as far as keanu, the majority of his performance was straight wooden from the jump rather than having been portrayed as naïve by design. its not like there was a method to his madness. that wooden performance carried into the two sequels as well. after he should have moved past his non-believer mode. i didn't despise him in the movie. but, i can't credit his performance as perfect, when he is like that in every role.

his execution of martial arts choreography was terrible as well. carrie ann moss and fish did their thing much better.

387055, Blade Trinity is the only movie I've ever walked out of
Posted by Jayson Willyams, Fri Jul-18-08 01:10 PM
It wasn't even laughably terrible; it was just insultingly bad.

That said, the third Matrix looked so bad I refused to see it, and I have no problem believing it was as shitty as Blade Trinity.

On a subjective, popcorn-movie-with-sick-effects-that-makes-you-think-a-bit scale:

Matrix - 10
Matrix 2 - 6 (the mushrooms gave everyone's faces a greenish glow, and made it seem like they had crazy-ass worms crawling under the skin. Also, they had me convinced that I understood the plotline completely...)
Matrix III - never saw it, but a preemptive hate score of 2.

Blade - 7
Blade II - 8.5
Blade III - 1

The winner: Peter Jackson's "Meet the Feebles" shits on all 6 of these movies, at once.
387102, lol

387424, both blade sequels have much more rewatchability than either matrix
Posted by bshelly, Sat Jul-19-08 01:53 PM
full disclosure: the first time i saw revelations, on opening day, i thought it was cool shit due to my perception that there were tons of mysteries i couldn't get my head around. on subsequent viewings, no, it's just poorly written and full of holes. revolutions is an atrocity against film making.

the blades? any of those three come on when i'm flipping around and i'm watching them. maybe it comes down to whether you like big special effects battles or hand to hand combat. what is beyond debate is that the human fight scenes in the blades are much better than the last two matrixes.
387094, Matrix Reloaded has way too much cool shit in it to get all this hate
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Fri Jul-18-08 02:17 PM
yeah there was alot of dumb shit in it, but lots of good stuff too:

Trinity crashing through skyscraper window & bucking shots back at agent as they fall = fiya

albino twins = fiya

freeway chase = fiya

monica belluci's titties = fiya

I mean cmon.

387110, The French bullshit and the Architect scene neutralize all of that.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Jul-18-08 02:57 PM

>Trinity crashing through skyscraper window & bucking shots
>back at agent as they fall = fiya

True, but effectively neutralized by the PS3 game
that was the scene with Neo fighting all the Mr.
Smith's.

>albino twins = fiya

Eh.

>freeway chase = fiya

That was extreme fiya. Effectively neutralized
by the French bullshit wit the zoom in on the
girl's coochie

>monica belluci's titties = fiya

Yeah, but effectively neutralized by
ugly ass trinity.

If Aaliyah(RIP) had lived to be in it,
the film would have been two points higher
automatically though

yeah, trinity aged badly from the 1st Matrix.

nah son, Nona Gaye >>> Aaliyah. Aaliyah was fine, but Nona thick as hell.

but really all this movie needed was like 20-25 minutes of dumb shit edited out & it would've been received alot better.
387141, The only way The Matrix Reloaded wouldn't qualify as "dumb shit"...
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-18-08 04:21 PM
...is if they cut everything except the freeway chase scene, and it only existed as a short film.
387406, the first one's just as dumb really
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Sat Jul-19-08 01:13 PM
direction was just alot tighter.
387675, I was never a big fan of the first Matrix either.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jul-20-08 08:31 AM
I mean, I can respect it for the world it created, and it definitely had some dope action...

...but yeah, it was still pretty dumb, chock full of bad dialogue and pesudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo.
387727, fair enough
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Sun Jul-20-08 01:08 PM
that opinion is reasonable. what I don't get is all the people who think the first one is this deep metaphysical masterpiece or something, but then say that the second one is just dumb nonsense.

although admittedly the first movie is just alot sleeker and less flawed & bloated than the second.

387171, honestly I thought 2 was solid off the freeway chase alone
Posted by cheapskeight, Fri Jul-18-08 06:34 PM
i need to see blade 1 again because I wanna say it may have aged better than Matrix 1. I say the second installments are close to a wash and Blade 3 wins outright, though it was garbation.

Posted by el guante, Fri Jul-18-08 06:35 PM
both definitely have their flaws and their strong points. blade may get the edge just because of snipes over keanu, though the matrix had a more compelling villain.

in terms of pure action, i always thought the first two blades were underrated in the pantheon of action films.

one thing BOTH films did, though, was let the audience actually WATCH the fight sequences. none of the close-cut jerky camerawork.

The first movie in both trilogies were the best. Remembering those movies kept me going back for additional disappointment in the following movies. I never read the Blade comic book so everything was new to me. Stephen Dorff was a great villian. Blade 2 was good but that last one was awful. The Matrix was just exciting with the special effects and action despite Keanu Reeves. His best and most believable role was in Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure. Every other role has been has been outside his acting ability but I didnt mind him as Neo. The storylines became predictable. What really bothered me was when Neo lost his eyesight. I was thinking is this the Matrix or Dune (Paul Atreides lost his vision). I guess it didnt help that I was reading the Dune series at that time. Even with the awfulness of Blade Trinity, I rank the Blade trilogy better than the Matrix trilogy.
