383747, i have never seen a james bond film. not one.
Posted by Cold Truth, Sat Jul-05-08 09:06 PM
they never interested me. but uh... i figure, if they are so beloved, i may be missing out.

so where should i start?
383754, Neither have I

The 1st one I attempted to watch was Casino Royale
383762, want a cookie? lol

not missing much, they are all pretty corny.
383765, no, dickhead, read the whole fucking post next time.
Posted by Cold Truth, Sat Jul-05-08 11:59 PM
i wanted to know where to start.
383785, could not disagree more. there are several solid films in the bunch.
Posted by eldealo, Sun Jul-06-08 02:44 AM
those films changed cinema in a far broader scale than most people even realize. your favorite action movies would not exist, if not for the bond movies.

383786, on where to start...
Posted by eldealo, Sun Jul-06-08 03:10 AM
there is very little continuity in the bond movies, so if you don't mind not starting from the beginning, try these...

From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Casino Royale
The Spy Who Loved Me
Goldeneye
For Your Eyes Only
Thunderball
Dr. No
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Living Daylights
You Only Live Twice
License To Kill
Live & Let Die
The World Is Not Enough
A View To A Kill
Octopussy
Die Another Day
Tomorrow Never Dies
Moonraker
Diamonds Are Forever
The Man With The Golden Gun

383840, That's pretty much all of them, isn't it?

Last Game:
Kansas 75, Memphis 68
Record (37-3)
BIG 12 REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS, 4TH STRAIGHT YEAR!!!!
BIG 12 TOURNEY CHAMPS, 3RD STRAIGHT YEAR!!!!
2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!
384595, yes, i meant to mention that it was my list of favs by rank.
Posted by eldealo, Wed Jul-09-08 09:04 AM
not that each film is good. i pretty much stand by each until after license to kill. beyond that, its patchy. interesting sequences, stunts, and/or villains, but a lot of things that i didn't care for.

383847, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day were
Posted by Marauder21, Sun Jul-06-08 04:46 PM
the reason the franchise had to be rebooted. They were pretty much Bond films at their worst when it came to completely implausible situations (the invisible car driving across the North Pole and the last line of TWINE "come" to mind.)
383849, Tomorrow Never Dies was kinda sucky too.

383893, See, I actually liked that
Posted by Marauder21, Sun Jul-06-08 10:32 PM
It was a bit over the top, but I thought it was entertaining and the sidekick kept things fresh for a bit.

But that's me.
384030, I own it, but I haven't watched it in years.
Posted by disco dj, Mon Jul-07-08 12:16 PM
I own them all all the way up to "Die Another Day".

384598, the villains were entirely underwhelming to me in tnd.
Posted by eldealo, Wed Jul-09-08 09:11 AM
poor pierce had sean bean as 006 to go up against AND famke's character xenia for his debut. it was damned near perfection. but the villains in each film after were spotty. i did like sophie marceau though.

That's the one with Robert Carslyle, right? I liked that one. Felt a lil' more urgent and not just the same ol', same ol'. Which the one with Jonathan Pryce is the bad guy very much did feel like. And "Die Another Day" sucked ass.

384811, wait, your LEAST favorite is Man With The Golden Gun?
Posted by DubSpt, Wed Jul-09-08 09:30 PM
Thats my GOAT bond film right there.

SCARAMANGA!
384860, the last 3 have no real importance for me.
Posted by eldealo, Thu Jul-10-08 04:12 AM
the man with the golden gun isn't necessarily my least favorite, but it is in my among my least favorite 3. i can take em or leave em. but i am not a big fan of tmwtgg. there are certainly good parts, but i'm not a huge fan of that flick. christopher lee was great! mary goodnight...blah, the 3rd nipple, nick nack, and sheriff j.w. pepper's reappearance was too much. its one of few fleming adaptations i think should be redone.

383810, surprisingly, Casino Royale is not a bad one to start with
Posted by HighVoltage, Sun Jul-06-08 12:29 PM
since its the earliest we see Bond in his career.

though with that said, it may give you the wrong impressions since Bond learned from some of his mistakes in this movie and therefore acts differently in the other films.
383848, My advice is: watch them in waves.
Posted by disco dj, Sun Jul-06-08 04:57 PM
meaning, watch the Sean Connery ones first. He was the first Bond ( George Lazenby doesn't count), and most would agree that he was the best.

Then watch the Roger Moore Joints. He was a fairly decent bond, and the majority of his Bond flicks are tolerable. There's a few eye rolling moments, though.

HERE'S where the wheels come off. Timothy Dalton wasn't too bad as Bond, but the plots started to get REALLY hokey.

Pierce Brosnan was GREAT as James Bond. But the plots are AWFUL. They just camouflaged the bullshit with Product placement, shiny gadgets and BIG explosions. That Halle Berry shit almost made me swear off Bond films.

"Who sent you?"
"ya Mama..."

WHAT?!?!?!

Everybody shits on "Casino Royale", but IMO, it was a pretty good re-start to the franchise. I'm not really sold on Daniel Craig yet, but I'll wait until the next one.

Just watch them either in order, or by preference of whichever Bond you like.

although connery was the best (for now), no way you can say lazenby doesn't count (he was the second *official* bond, not the first, btw). at any rate, 'on her majesty's secret service' is a top 5 bond film, IMO.

i used to think the same about moore. i recently rewatched a lot of the moore bond films and i just can't take his portrayal anymore. way too hammy.

i liked dalton a lot. 'license to kill' was pretty good, and benecio del toro is pretty good in it as well. 'the living daylights' was pretty meh.

uuuuhhhh, you might wanna recheck that. 94% on rotten tomatoes.

i think most people who didn't like casino royale on some level were definitely in the minority.

fwiw, imo the top 5 bond films are:

dr. no
casino royale
from russia with love
on her majesty's secret service
goldfinger

ohmss was very well done. lazenby could have been great had he not quit so early. dumb move.

it pissed me off that they didn't try and follow this movie up with a story that involved bond getting revenge for what happened in ohmss.

most of my friends off the board didn't like "Casino Royale".

one of them is just an asshole with suspect tastes in movies period, ( he's the "I never saw it but it sucks" type) but they had me convinced that it was the worst movie ever made.

then I saw it for myself. Eff those guys.

384602, great suggestion.

that is how my dad really introduced me to the character. before that, i had just seen a few flicks here and there as a kid. but pops laid out all of the ways that these movies changed cinema at the time. sean really made me understand what was so cool about the character.

to be fair with george, he did have the impossible task of following sean.

i've come to appreciate moore's comedic side. there are many moments where it just works. but a lot of other moments where the movies just took real nose-dive.

But you're right about that Halle Berry line.

I didnt think Dalton was a great Bond but I liked his movies.

Goldeneye hasn't aged well

Duran Duran's soundtrack is still my favorite aspect of View to a Kill

384038, Watching the old 007 movies out of context will be interesting...
Posted by DawgEatah, Mon Jul-07-08 12:58 PM
You have to keep in mind that during the Cold War, the movie-going public had a huge fascination with spy shit. There must have been a grillion spy movies and tv shows during that era. In addition, technology started advancing exponentially, so the gadget factor was a big part of the movies' appeal. Further, there was a sexual revolution and all that. That first Austin Powers movie satirically looks at these points and how they don't really fit into today's social climate. I'm not saying that you can't enjoy them now, I'm just saying it will be a different experience for someone going into these films without the context of the times as well as the nostalgia factor. Think of these movies almost like "Spysploitation" movies.

Everyone needs to start with Dr No and Goldfinger. Then skip ahead to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Check out some Roger Moore after that: a little Moonraker, Live and Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun. I enjoy Living Daylights and License to Kill for what they are but I can't remember which is which. Then watch Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

(Feel free to watch more of the Brosnan ones as he is a great Bond, just be prepared for the utter ridiculousness that is the script and plot.)

I think it would be better to move on to the other bond generations and get a feel for the different vibe's going on, before gonig back and watch the rest of the sean connery flicks so you can really appreciate em

Trying to give people a taste of the whole James Bond buffet. I love the Connery movies man. LOVE THEM. If Goldfinger is not #1 on your list I'm not sure we have anything to build on. And you need to have at least another 2 Connery's in your top 5. And all the Connery Bonds are in the top 10 or 12.

But this was for folks who hadn't seen a single Bond film. You can't just say "start and stop with Connery" because they don't get a taste for anything else.

Plus, this was a boring ass post. I can't have a boring ass Bond post. It's un-Bond like.
