373720, in your opinion how would you fix the Superman Franchise
Posted by Nieman5, Sat May-24-08 06:36 PM
It just doesn't seem to be the right theme for the world we currently live in. To bland.

The new movie was a let down and no where near the Batman Begins type of comeback it needed.

So in your opionion how would you fix it.
373724, supes need to be humanized
Posted by Whiteout, Sat May-24-08 07:19 PM
rather than just being anthropomorphic, because otherwise he's just not a compelling hero, and viewers can't really relate to a displaced alien who gains godlike powers from the adoptive yellow star.

The Doomsday arc has him dying, which could do it, but then that puts the movie franchise in the same sticky spot the comics were in after that event.

Perhaps an aging Supes, rather than the young look they went for with that last flick, could add some character. Or maybe a disillusioned Supes who has some kind of turmoil with his role of savior to a non-deserving populace.

I'm just shaking limbs here, seeing what falls.
373769, Kingdom Come the Movie?

It could definitely work.
373831, it would take a half-billion to make tho, unless it was animated

Posted by Brother_Afron, Sun May-25-08 05:32 PM
Only if they did a straight adaption which they'll never do with a comic book movie. I think taking the theme of new heroes replacing the old and a cynical Superman that retires could work, though.
374070, I've always thought an animated version of it would be great
Posted by mrhood75, Tue May-27-08 01:09 AM
And yes, they should do a straight adaptation.
374128, yep
Posted by Whiteout, Tue May-27-08 10:24 AM
That's pretty much what I had in mind
373727, They need to let that mofo fight somebody
Posted by Rockscissorspaper, Sat May-24-08 07:28 PM
Not just natural disasters and shit.

Introduce Metallo or somebody into the movies.
373728, love of God, can we get a Brainiac movie?

373827, A movie with Braniac in it would be dope.
Posted by K. Dot, Sun May-25-08 04:08 PM
373828, Kevin Smith's script for the Superman flick was heavy on Braniac
Posted by mrhood75, Sun May-25-08 04:32 PM
373841, 1) have brainiac unleash a guh lac tus like wave of drones on earth
Posted by bshelly, Sun May-25-08 05:36 PM
2) have supes beat the crap out of them for a while

3) have the brainiac ship show up and beat the crap out of supes, send him into a mountain, and start taking over and threatening lois.

4) have supes get up and be mad and kick the crap out of the ship.

5) have brainiac in biped form come out. have supes grab him take him to the moon and bust his ass.

6) tease the darkseid or mongul movie after the credits.
373860, 7) Shia LaBeouf

Public opinion turns from Supes to a more aggressive brand of hero called the Elite. For the movie, I would use the Eradicator as the new "hero". Supes feels outdated and thinks about hanging up his tights, but comes to the rescue when the Eradicator lets innocents buy it in the crossfire. After defeating him, Supes discovers Erad is a cyborg and finds out the true villain--Brainiac. The people see who the real hero is, Kal destroys Brainiac (or does he?), Lois slobs him down as a reward.

Oh, and the "Super Baby"? Never happened.

I wouldn't put Brainiac in it just yet but I'd definitely put in the Elite. That was one of the best Superman stories in years.

an invincible superhero ain't really all that heroic, cuz you ain't really risking shit.

They could go all miraceman on it, but that prolly won't happen
373773, he's not invincible if
Posted by Rockscissorspaper, Sun May-25-08 09:01 AM
you pit him against a villain of comparable power.

373826, That's what made Superman 2 work.

373835, Superman 2 worked?

373865, i dunno if in the way they're saying....but YES
Posted by Calico, Sun May-25-08 09:01 PM
(i think dude meant to say "2" tho)

....i enjoyed Supes 2 & 3 more than the rest...if you mix the two you'd have the perfect Supes movie...everything Clark Kent/lois related in 2 sucked balls...if you take that shit OUT, and put in the clark kent story in 3, add Rich as the guy tryin to help the phantom zoners understand earth..and you got a better classic..
373868, RE: Superman 2 worked?
Posted by rorschach, Sun May-25-08 09:21 PM
I think so. The idea of Superman fighting three people just as powerful made for a decent sequel although WB tried their best to ruin it with the Niagara Falls scenes and that dreaded Cellophane S.

from the comics?
373825, Giving it to someone who understands the comic wouldn't hurt
Posted by mrhood75, Sun May-25-08 03:57 PM
I'm not saying they have be slavishly true to form, but Singer pretty openly said he had no interest in the comic at all, and his movie showed that he didn't understand the characters.

Also, kiling the concept of Lex Luthor, wanna-be real estate king, would also be a great start. If you're going to use him, Lex Luthor, ultra-humanistic industrialist is so much more interesting.

Superman: Secret Identity

I would love to see that as a movie.
Do something outside the box with a superhero movie.
I mean Superman Returns was outside, but too far out.
Even though I like the movie, they need to go to another direction.

That's pretty much what he does anyway when he's not directing. Dudes make a grip of money on the "lecture" circuit.

Just adapt a comic storyline. Why is that so hard? And it ain't just Superman. All of 'em. I ain't saying you have to be shot by shot faithful (a la Rodriguez and Snyder), but for fuck's sake... I wish Hollywood would stop just taking properties and going "Well, let me retcon the whole fucking history of the character."

374221, JOHN BYRNE........JOHN BYRNE......JOHN BYRNE..........
Posted by Wordsmith, Tue May-27-08 02:52 PM
They need to use John Byrne's Man of Steel #1-6 and his run on Superman # 1-21 as the blueprint for the movies.......

Byrne's adaptation had it all......humanized Supes, a hip-updated version of him that wasn't derivative, Supes wasn't all-powerful, he had weaknesses that weren't based on a green rock, Byrne got rid of some of the more stupid elements of the Superman mythos (i.e. - Krypto the Super Dog) and did justice to the updates of some of Supes rogue gallery. Also, he made Lois sexy, yet driven without being stupid.

I haven't felt anything from the Superman franchise (comics or movies) since Byrne's update and movie-wise Supes 2. That whole doomsday stuff didn't move me at all. They need to take pages from Byrne's update - then you have your franchise back.
