371102, My favourite Bourne movie was the first one, Enemy of the State
Posted by bshelly, Mon May-12-08 08:15 PM
You know, the movie that the Bourne series bit its cinematography and themes from and replaced will with an angel faced white dude.

Have you talked about it?
371109, except that it isn't anything like it.
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon May-12-08 08:47 PM
except that the bourne books predated enemy of the state the movie.

except that will smith was a lawyer who was just caught up in some shit accidental like and wound up an unwitting target of a politician trying to keep some shit under wraps, and bourne was a highly trained assassin with amnesia trying to figure out who he was while being hunted down by the people who created him.

except that they monitored robert deans every move with bugs and satellites, whereas jason bourne could be right under their noses and they wouldn't notice till he told him

one film shows how the government can be peeping toms and fuck with every facet of our lives if they want to

the other shows how the government gets down with their international espionage game

don't let the satellite feeds fool you

while there is some common ground here, it's a helluva reach to say that these are the same movie

if you *really* wanted to go in on the bourne films, The Long Kiss Goodnight was the correct choice.
371110, did i say they were the same movie? no
Posted by bshelly, Mon May-12-08 08:50 PM
i said the bournes bit their entire look and central theme (resourceful individual beating technology).

right there

or did you forget?
371496, Plus, calling Damon 'angel-faced' is somewhat hoeaghmoeau
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Wed May-14-08 09:13 AM
lol

Damon looked intense throughout the Bourne movies. It was Will who had that dumbfounded "deer caught in the headlights" look.
371114, you mean The Fugitive?
Posted by InKast, Mon May-12-08 08:53 PM
oh and any Bourne movie >>>>> Enemy of the State
371116, You mean, they replaced Richard Chamberlain with Will Smith
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon May-12-08 08:57 PM
and then replaced Will Smith with Matt Damon. 20 years ago, Chamberlain was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Jason Bourne in the TV movie, The Bourne Identity.

And, let's be real, Enemy of the State was just a Tony Scott version of The Net.

Yeah, that greyed out, heavily edited style is similar, but people like Ridley Scott/David Fincher have been doing it for a minute.

Bourne was vastly superior.

You said that The Bourne Identity 'bit' the cinematography from Enemy of the State.

That could be because the same guy did cinematography work for both movies.

I guess he bit himself. Nasty.

Posted by bshelly, Wed May-14-08 10:45 AM
and since the last two are only loosely based on the books, well, maybe you should wiki more.
371531, RE: why'd you say 2002 then?
Posted by inpulse, Wed May-14-08 10:52 AM
because the books were so popular when the movies came out

kinda like 'zodiac' was a very popular book when 'zodiac' the movie came out, 'v for vendetta' was s very popular comic when the movie came out, so forth and so on

but those bourne books were huge, they everywhere during the movies - grocery store, target, airports, never mind the book store

as far as your wiki comment, i'll let that go, you're just gasping for air at this point

371535, no. i actually can't believe i have to translate shit talk to emasculese
Posted by bshelly, Wed May-14-08 11:01 AM
maybe, just maybe, what i meant is that enemy of the state succeeded and some exec went, hm, i bet another movie like it--or the Matrix, or one of the 5000 other films like it--could succeed. are there any stories out there that will tell people the same basic story again?
371540, no translation needed, just say what you mean the first time
Posted by inpulse, Wed May-14-08 11:14 AM
the problem with your argument is that 'enemy of the state' wasn't a very original movie to begin with...yes it's possible that someone saw its success and said 'hey let's piggyback on that movie's popularity', but it's not very likely, IMO

as someone has already said, 'enemy of the state' had more in common with films like 'the conversation' or 'blow up', which wasn't quite the same thing as what the bourne story was

i'd say it's more likely that spy movies inspired the producers to make the bourne movies...james bond, perhaps, or maybe even 'spy game' which came out before bourne (*checks allmovie to make sure*)...'spy game' kinda had that hyper-editing, european espionage setting that bourne had
