368585, Your Top 5 Superhero Movies of All Time
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat May-03-08 12:34 PM
NOTE: Only pick superheroes from comic books for the purpose of this poll. Also, we can redo this at the end of the summer after The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk come out.

Mine:

1. X2: X-Men United
2. Iron Man
3. Superman 2 (KNEEL BEFORE ZOD)
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Batman Begins

368588, superheroes adapted from comic books? or just superheroes in general
Posted by buckshot defunct, Sat May-03-08 12:38 PM
I need to know whether or not to include The Incredibles.

Or Meteor Man.
368589, From comic books. I'll edit the original post to include that.

There have been five good superhero movies made? I enjoyed Batman Begins, Christian Bale isn't given the credit he deserves. I really can't think of any superhero movies other than that, that really entertained me. I steer clear of these types of movies typically though. The Batman franchise became ridiculous pretty quickly, but I think the new one will be solid. The original X-Men was alright, it's hard for me to give anything after that a passing grade though.
368596, my pesonal top 5...

no order.

Superman Returns (I know what you're thinking. Why?)
Batman
X-Men 2
Superman II
Spiderman 2

Shit, I forgot Sin City, I didn't even think about it being based on a graphic novel. That'd have to be my number one, and I have feeling parts two and three would be in my top 5 as well, but lets see if they can keep the stylized quality up for two sequels.
368611, Sin City doesn't fall within the "superhero" perimeter.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat May-03-08 03:07 PM
I meant for this post to be about the more traditional comic book superhero films.

1) Spiderman 2
2) Batman Begins

369021, Spiderman 2 really sucked.
Posted by will_5198, Mon May-05-08 01:47 PM
I know I'm in the minority, but it did.

"Oh, but it was took the superhero genre to new levels...the love story was realistic, the characters had depth!"

hell no it didn't. all those plot lines sucked, and if it were a regular action flick -- no comic book influence -- everyone would have rightly said so.

acting was garbage. there were about 20 minutes of interesting Spiderman stuff, and 100 minutes of crappy dialogue. NOBODY wants to see Kirsten Dunst and Tobey McGuire have conversations!

I would've rented crazy/beautiful if I needed to see some shitty love story, or gone endure the latest Kate Hudson flick to reward myself with pussy afterwards.

plus, the damn thing would never end. Even the convoluted mess called Spiderman 3 was better.

Daredevil had some crappy parts, but the first-person scenes were 10x better than ANYTHING in Spiderman 2.

Spiderman 2: the most overrated comic book movie of all-time.
369026, eh, I see your points
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon May-05-08 02:05 PM
but THIS:

>Daredevil had some crappy parts, but the first-person scenes
>were 10x better than ANYTHING in Spiderman 2.

cmon.

>Spiderman 2: the most overrated comic book movie of all-time.

yeah it's overrated. was still good though.
369032, that shit was way cooler than a CGI red ant floating onscreen
Posted by will_5198, Mon May-05-08 02:16 PM
I don't think any of the actual comics captured Daredevil's "powers" as accurately as the film did

but I've drawn my line in the sand on Spiderman 2, taking on all comers like O_E in Starbucks.
369048, I liked Daredevil actually
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon May-05-08 02:55 PM
>I don't think any of the actual comics captured Daredevil's

the "shadow world" stuff was cool.

people shit on Daredevil too hard, i enjoyed it for what it was worth.
but it is not seeing Spidey 2.

>but I've drawn my line in the sand on Spiderman 2, taking on
>all comers like O_E in Starbucks.

LOL

edit: oh and you have TMNT II on your list... isn't that the one with the Vanilla Ice rap? and this is what you're putting ahead of Spidey 2?

... ah well, I'ma just leave that alone before you go in O_E style on me.
369090, you ever seen a turtle get down? slammin, jammin w/ the new street sound

>edit: oh and you have TMNT II on your list... isn't that the
>one with the Vanilla Ice rap? and this is what you're putting
>ahead of Spidey 2?

okay, that one is mostly pure nostalgia. but I saw it on TBS the other week and still remained entertained, so it counts.

same thing for Batman: The Movie (Adam West version) -- fucking shark repellent! brilliant!

which kinda brings me to my larger gripe about Spiderman 2. it forgot it was a comic book movie, in a bad way. 2/3 the flick tried to be some serious, Oscar-winning drama...too bad it failed miserably.

I'm not saying great acting and mature plots can't exist in superhero movies -- but you better be damn sure it's amazing stuff.

otherwise, stick to the action and nerd fluff.
369114, shit, I forgot all about Adam West!!
Posted by buckshot defunct, Mon May-05-08 06:18 PM
That movie is pretty great, and a much cooler and ballsier take on a superhero than we'll likely ever see again.

After that, it gets a little muddy.

I'd probably have Batman Returns, X2, Spider Man and TMNT in the top 5.

Aquaman looked pretty cool from the 10 seconds I saw before the power went out in the theater.

I'd also like to shout out the The Rocketeer which would probably make my top 10.

according to Longo. Otherwise, it would be there, along with V for Vendetta. All the Marvel movies were too fucked up for my liking, I've never fucked with the old Superman's, and the first Batman, imo, is overrated. It ain't all that. I mean, I have all the Spider-man and X-Men movies, I like them, but at the same time, I kinda don't, because the characters, story lines, etc., were all kinds of messed up.

369054, the Thomas Jane one?
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon May-05-08 03:01 PM
or the Dolph Lundgren one?

I didn't think either one was true to the comic really... maybe Dolph a little more, just cuz he's so cold-blooded - I mean he is fuckin' Drago for chrissake.

but I thought you were talking about overall quality in terms of how well the movie was made, and both Punisher movies were awful.
369385, Yeah, the Thomas Jane one
Posted by icecold21, Tue May-06-08 02:59 PM
X-men, Spidey, etc., were more entertaining but I was factoring in how well it was adapted when I was talking about how well it was done. There were more flaws in those movies then there was in Punisher. I'm not saying that Punisher was extremely true to the comic, but it was more than X-Men and Spider-man. Thomas Jane's Punisher should have been more ruthless and cold, but I don't think it was that bad compared to Marvel's other films in regards to adaptation.

It's funny how the first Batman (Burton/Keaton/Nicholson) has fallen out of my top 5 at this point. That movie was number one for me, and I'm sure for a lot of people, for a long time. I see a few still put it up there, though.

6) X-Men 3
7) Spider Man 3

And here are my ratings (since June 2004 - anything not on the list means I haven't seen it since I started doing ratings:

Batman Begins: A+ to A (dope as shit)
Fantastic 4: A to A- (yeah, I liked it, so what?)
Fantastic 4 2: B to B+ (not as good)
Ghost Rider: C+ (worst of the bunch by far)
Spider-Man: A (I didn't like the Green Goblin much, but otherwise awesome)
Spider-Man 2: A+ (my favorite)
Spider-Man 3: A (I loved it, I don't get the hate)
Superman Returns: A (best of the Supes movies, although # 2 is dope)
Superman 1: B (too dated)
Superman 2: A- (fun to watch but pretty flawed)
{X-Men 1 would almost certainly be an A+, but I need to see it again, as it's not on my list}
X-Men 2: A+ (second favorite)
X-Men 3: A to A+ (again, why the hate? this was dope)

I left out animated movies and movies like Sin City and Blade.

I haven't seen Iron Man, Hulk, Daredevil, Elektra, or Hellboy.

Also, I am sure the OG Batman would be somewhere in there but I haven't seen it in years. It might even get into the top 5, if it's not too dated.

Yeah, it was kinda cheesy. But I laughed.

Well, two scenes if you count the dance scene in the bar, and him dancing on the street like an idiot. The latter made me laugh, the former was just... weird (but somehow more believable).
369023, those scenes were both highlights
Posted by will_5198, Mon May-05-08 01:49 PM
first off, it's fucking Spiderman -- the whole premise is cheesy. so him grooving to himself was more or less taken right of those '70s comics

and in the second scene he slaps up Kirsten Dunst, which automatically makes it a winner.
369027, I remember you defending those scenes when it came out!

I didn't mind them either, but I can see how someone would dislike them - though disregarding the whole movie because of those two scenes seems a bit much.

The "grooving" scene was funny to me (as it was meant to be). I'm still not sure what to make of or say about the jazz bar scene. It was weird, but I didn't mind it.

PS I kinda like Kirsten Dunst.

mention alongside... batman begins, iron man, x2, the ones everyone loves.

in terms of creating an atmosphere, memorable characters, memorable dialogue, well-filmed action, all that-- the first two really deliver.

wesley snipes as blade, to me, is as compelling/iconic as RDJ as starks. iron man and batman begins are probably better all-around films than blade 1 and 2, but as "comic book movie experiences," i'd say the four are about even.

But I didn't like it all that much.

Actually I didn't like X-1 all that much either. It wasn't until the first Spider-Man that I believed these types of movies could be done well. At least, done well until the Green Goblin shows up.
369117, That opening club scene in Blade is excellent.

Beyond that, the violence just starts to wear me out. But that first scene features some mighty fine ass kicking.

That's kind of the problem and why I didn't even submit a list for this post. Even the ones I like start so much stronger than they finish. Really, the only ones that had me hyped throughout were Batman and The Crow, but those have so much nostalgic value that I feel strange ranking them with more contemporary superhero films. (Batman is still wonderful to me, I'm a little scared to watch The Crow as an adult. I'm worried it will be like Highlander, where a movie that was once a potential G.O.A.T. will reveal itself as a goofy b-movie.)
369400, Blade 2 is fantastic

There's not nearly enough love for Hellboy in this post. That was an almost perfectly executed comic book flick.
369363, I absolutely loved Hellboy...

I'll be in line for the sequel. But seriously though, I think Hellboy's Top 10.

369371, Hellboy got more love than the original Batman
Posted by jigga, Tue May-06-08 02:10 PM
If that's not enough love I don't know what to tell ya. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did but it was pretty forgetful.
369382, Ok, let me try this. #1 Batman Begins #2 Iron Man #3 Blade 2...
Posted by DawgEatah, Tue May-06-08 02:42 PM
Yeah I said it.

#4 Spider-Man 2
#5 Superman 2

I am assuming that we can't count Sin City or Unbreakable... cuz if we DO count those, I might need to rethink this list.
