347864, Choke. Posted by mylife 2.1.9, Sun Feb-03-08 06:47 AM
Book was written by Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club).
Screenplay written (took over 5 years) by Clark Gregg (Magnolia, State & Main, The Usual Suspects, etc).
Cast includes Anjelica Huston, Sam Rockwell, Isiah Whitlock Jr., & Brad William Henke, to name a few.
Saw the Private Screening at Sundance and it is a great, great, great adaptation. Perfect for me. Sam Rockwell & Anjelica Huston were perfectly cast and the adaptation by Clark is stellar.
Heard that release date will be August 1. First preview clip available here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH1p5OnsEYA
Also, Clark Gregg is really, really amicable and kind and good-natured. I enjoyed my conversations with him immensely, and he worked hard to be loyal to Chuck's work.
*Bonus info - Chuck has a very small cameo!

Choke is my favorite Palahnuik book next to Fight Club and I loved the film adaptation of it too. I can't wait to see this one. One of my most anticipated of 08.

Choke is easily my favorite by Pahlinuk. I can't imagine that book into a movie because it is such an obscene book to begin with.

348160, it's a dark comedy, so more a character thing... Posted by mylife 2.1.9, Mon Feb-04-08 07:33 PM
although the sex addiction and *that other thing* are prevalent.

347911, This should do well, even though it's going to be a tough sell Posted by ZooTown74, Sun Feb-03-08 04:54 PM
for Fox Searchlight
Yeah, they can emphasize the "From the Writer of Fight Club" angle, but still, the subject matter is going to be tough to touch on
But then again, people said the same thing about Juno, and look what happened there
I guess what I'm saying is if I have a dark comedy about a sex addict, I can't think of a better place to take it than Fox Searchlight. Focus, maybe, but Fox Searchlight definitely. ________________________________________________________________________ so glam, it's absurd

348161, Chuck's fan base is so big and so loyal, i don't think it will Posted by mylife 2.1.9, Mon Feb-04-08 07:34 PM
be an issue. I could be wrong, but I think it'll do well.

347915, i'm halfway through Lullaby Posted by amplifya, Sun Feb-03-08 05:14 PM
and while its keeping me entertained, it's definitely not won me over as a fan..if its just OK to me should i even bother with Choke and Fight Club..

348041, lullaby was mediocre, i hardly remember it Posted by silentnoah, Mon Feb-04-08 01:09 PM

348110, yes scope out choke Posted by crow, Mon Feb-04-08 05:15 PM
Lullaby was ok, but choke was incredible in my opinion his best.
|
348162, all of his books are so different, cop it anyway. Posted by mylife 2.1.9, Mon Feb-04-08 07:35 PM
I love them all for the different things they portray, but Survivor is better to me than Lullaby and Choke better than both.

Watched the preview and I can't wait for this one. Never read any of the authors books but I might have to check them out. Should I read choke before i see the film.
Also Sam Rockwell is one of the most underrated actors. I saw Snow Angels a few months ago and he really did a great job in that film.

374465, I think I have a small crush on Kelly MacDonald Posted by JungleSouljah, Wed May-28-08 01:27 PM
She's aged very well. Between this and NCFOM I'm sure we'll be seeing her more and more in the future.
|
374474, Her accent in NCFOM was spot on, and she is from WAY across Posted by Dae021, Wed May-28-08 02:11 PM
The pond.
I wouldn't beat, but I appreciate her acting ability.

Nathan Larson is credited with the score. I guess Reckoner is the only track that made it in the movie. Still lookin forward to checkin this out just the same tho.

great performances, but its hard to watch without thinking about the book.

i didn't think an adaptation would work with the book, but the writing and casting looks good.
|
404867, I enjoyed it Posted by THRILLHOUSE, Sun Sep-28-08 08:29 AM
Sam Rockwell is one of the most slept on actors out there, dude is solid in everything I have seen him in.

404913, WHAT THE FUCK?!!!!?!?!!!! Posted by SammyJankis, Sun Sep-28-08 11:30 AM
this was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. my favorite palahaniuk book, and the adaptation i have been dreaming they would make since the first time i read it. i been following the production and putting people on to the story and its finally here. and it's playing no where near me and its supposed to be a wide release. i fucking hate alabama!!!
|
404922, ooh im going to have to see this later on this week Posted by SankofaII, Sun Sep-28-08 12:33 PM
and do a double feature with Jonathan Demme's Rachel Gets Married this weekend...
I loved Choke and all of Palahniuk's (sp?) books....and its playing around the corner and up the street from me..HOLLA!!!
|
404977, when is the wide release? Posted by vik, Sun Sep-28-08 08:56 PM

405020, Much like the book...very uneven and unlikable characters. Posted by Ryan M, Mon Sep-29-08 12:22 AM
Unfortunately, the movie was EXTREMELY underdeveloped, including all the choking stuff.
(SPOILERS WITHIN)
Okay so...I read the book about 6 years ago and I thought it was alright. Didn't love it, but I did notice none of the characters were remotely likable. Fortunately for the film version, Sam Rockwell is great. So is Angelica Huston. But their characters are totally cold and annoying. Nonetheless, Rockwell does the dialog a great service...and comes off as fucking hilarious most of the time.
The rock subplot? Wow....they totally screwed that up.
The choking? Jesus. The first scene is brilliant. They did it PERFECTLY. But it seemed to become less the focus of the story, DESPITE being a major, major plot point. Also, with regards to the whole "twist"....Victor goes from not believing he's Jesus to believing he is within 2 scenes...in the book, it was just as ridiculous, but a LOT more gradual and funnier.
Lastly, my MAJOR contention was Kelly Macdonald as Paige. Woooooooooooooo was she HORRIBLE. I mean, BAD. So, so, so bad. Someone might spin it as "Well her character was acting..." but fuck that...she was AWFUL.
If you liked the book, you might like the movie. But truth be told...it's far too strange and vast a book to really do justice onscreen. IMO, it was never a great story, but the comedic stuff was there. In some ways, it succeeds, but in many more ways...it fails.
|
405023, i'm a huge fan of the book and i thought the movie was really good. Posted by al_sharp, Mon Sep-29-08 12:53 AM
sure i got my qualms about differences from the book...but as a movie by itself it's very enjoyable...lots of laugh-out-loud moments...and sam rockwell is fantastic.

I never got around to reading the book, but I just finished watching the movie and loved it. Some of the plot toward the end was absurd but other than that I thought it was great.

The plot was kinda lame to me but the characters were interesting. You got to experience more of their wackiness in the book than in the movie.
