345909, Not to mention that shiteous television show Posted by Starbaby Jones, Thu Jan-24-08 10:59 PM
Dude is putting in work...creating some of the most unispired shite ever, but it's work nonetheless.
|
345914, have we ever discussed how sexist TP movies are? Posted by Nukkapedia, Thu Jan-24-08 11:51 PM
"Around here, men do that." "Where I'm from, men do it all." "Then, maybe you should come live here."
*screw face*
Looks like another adaptation of one of his plays, replete with the messy mix of melodrama and stupidity.
(somebody DOES appear to have slid that nigga an extra dollar, tho, like Monte said)

345961, Reason # 5645 why you don't like Tyler Perry Posted by BlakGirlSoul, Fri Jan-25-08 09:48 AM
HA! ************************************** <--- I love ya man http://blackgirlsdontdate.blogspot.com Black Girls Don't Date - Coming soon! ***************************************
|
346073, I mean, as tangy as Tyler is, why are his scripts so sexist? Posted by Nukkapedia, Fri Jan-25-08 06:07 PM
His women are weak. They require strong men to come and build them up/improve their lives.
The men are all, to some degree, trifling, except for one supernaturally perfect nigga with twenty-inch arms and one of those Jesus fish decals on the back of his cars.
It's like he's stuck in the late-40s, early-50s. Or perhaps it's the influence of the traditional black church?
|
346081, Or, maybe you're just a self-hating Negro who is mad at Tyler??? Posted by bignick, Fri Jan-25-08 06:30 PM
You know some idiot is gonna come in here and say it sooner or later.
Everything you said is dead on, BTW.

346458, I am not disagreeing with you Posted by BlakGirlSoul, Mon Jan-28-08 10:33 AM
But that has been established back when a post about Diary of a Mad Black Woman was made We understand how you feel about TP there is no need to beat us over the head with it And as long as that dude stay making money off the black church, the movies will cintinue to be made
|
346712, mind you, I never read that post and I'm sorry. Posted by Nukkapedia, Mon Jan-28-08 11:27 PM
Not trying to beat anyone over the head with "how I feel" about Tyler Perry.
|
346758, Perhaps you are unclear as to the purpose of a message board? Posted by bignick, Tue Jan-29-08 04:14 AM
>We understand how you feel about TP there is no need to beat >us over the head with it
|
346770, So the purpose IS to beat people over the head? Posted by BlakGirlSoul, Tue Jan-29-08 08:54 AM
I understand you express your opininon But if I hate Bobby Brown and I come on here everyday and say I hate Bobby Brown and if someone mentions the word Brown I go on a tirade about how much I hate Bobby Brown, I am pretty sure people will get tired of it i was just letting him know that we know Y'ALL don't like Tyler Perry....point taken
|
346925, it's not that I don't like Tyler Perry. I dont know the man. Posted by Nukkapedia, Tue Jan-29-08 05:05 PM
I'm sure his pets are well-fed, his mama's bills are always paid, and his boyfriend is always looking sharp.
But a good filmmaker he is not. Successful, yes, easily, but not good. Maybe someday he'll be a passable filmmaker, but that day has not yet come.
|
346929, And we know that you know. Posted by bignick, Tue Jan-29-08 05:17 PM

has he done this yet? like, of the same movie.
it'd be better even if it was all new material. they film the best one of the stage production and then put it out on DVD in time for the release of the film's DVD release.

|
346222, the "gee, why are you so critical? where's YOUR movie?" response. Posted by Nukkapedia, Sat Jan-26-08 11:11 PM
something I'd expect from a teenager, not an adult.
Me, Nick, or anyone else criticizing TP don't need to write, direct, etc. a film of our own in order to critique him: there are hundreds of filmmakers who have already outdone and will continue to outdo Tyler Perry.
That's like saying I have to be able to sing like Marvin Gaye in order to say that Britney Spears or Ciara can't carry a tune without Melodyne's assistance.

346252, ^^^^^^ ETHER!!!! Posted by Ray_Snill, Sun Jan-27-08 11:15 AM
yeah u got me! but a claim was made that what TP does is so easy and that does require as we say on OKP, the mandate. thanks for taking the time to respond though.

V.O. For two generic fat fucks with Jewfros, life couldn't get any better.
Fat JewFro Haver #1 Dude, I just don't see life getting any better for us.

346305, For the upteenth consecutive time, a lot people really like this shit? Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-27-08 07:01 PM
I just don't get the appeal of anything this dude does. From the plays to the sitcom to the movies.
There are shitloads of black movies sitting in Blockbuster on some straight to video, that nobody watches, but this dude has a loyal fanbase that checks for all his shit. Like not too many folks will go to catch "Akeelah and the Bee", but watch one of his piece of shit films. Someone explain this to me, his popularity that is.

surviving over here. so you can SHIT on church if u want to, but i bet u that the blk church is a large part of YOUR legacy.

346989, Why you so sensitive? Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Tue Jan-29-08 09:31 PM
All he said was "black church". And left it at that. Put on some Mary Mary and chillax a notch or two.

347014, cuz "modern" af-am's act like the black church enslaved & brainwashed Posted by fire, Tue Jan-29-08 11:29 PM
them, meanwhile, they READILY work in or want to work for institutions that made money off the backs of black slaves. or go to schools that wouldn't even allow them to do anything besides work in the cafeteria up until the 60's. i'm tired of the "lets praise everything that doesn't make yt like us" attitude of "some" black people.
and no my sentiments aren't directed TO nukkapedia specifically, i'm tired of folks shitting on blk institutions.
|
347032, this is sort of a red herring as far as this post is concerned. Posted by Nukkapedia, Wed Jan-30-08 01:27 AM
|
347031, yeah, it's a part of almost all of our legacies/lives Posted by Nukkapedia, Wed Jan-30-08 01:24 AM
but I'm specifically referring to the fact that Tyler Perry caters to the black church demographic; that is, the black church community. I was explaining to TheRealBillyOcean that this is Tyler Perry's target audience, so that he better understands what part of the population these films are aimed at.
The prevalence of the black church in the legacies/early lives of black people who, at this present time, are not part of the black Protestant church community, is irrelevant to the point I'm making.

“No one knew who I was except the director, and I loved it. I’m self-taught and a real sponge—I always want to learn more about the business, so I started asking the art director questions. He had no idea who I was, so he went home and Googled me. And he came back the next day and said, ‘I can’t believe you were asking me those questions.’ ”
I can!
*edit* and saying that "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" opened to "mixed reviews" is very much sugar-coating.

355609, isn't he cross-promoting this movie with his tv show? Posted by ternary_star, Thu Mar-06-08 04:58 PM
that's smart. not sure if that's ever been done before.
i'm really trying to wrap my head around why i'm so annoyed with this dude. i mean, he's terrible at what he does, but so are a lot of other people (besides "Boyz", i hate John Singleton's work, too).
i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that his stuff is just *weird*.
i was trying to watch "House of Payne" the other night, and beyond just the horrible fake laugh track and terrible improv, there was a scene where the mother stumbles out of the kitchen speaking in tongues. there's no foreshadowing, explaining why she would do that or any reaction from other characters...it's just a fat stereotype speaking in tongues for about 5-6 seconds. it was a perfect example of why i'm so baffled by his work...he basically just throws shit together that *kinda* makes sense to him and there's no other process for refining/improving.

355652, I think it's that Perry has such dedicated fans who swear by his Posted by Nukkapedia, Thu Mar-06-08 08:04 PM
stuff.
I don't think you'll have arguments with most folks where one side is trying to convince the other that "Meet the Spartans" is art. With Tyler Perry, though...
One big issue, of course, is that there are so few Black films coming out of Hollywood. A lot of people give Perry respect, regardless of the quality of his output, for the simple fact that he's a black man directing, writing, and producing his own films outside of the major studio system (I half-expect someone to run up and call him the 21st century's answer to Oscar Michaeaux, although this would be a fallacy on a number of levels). I, myself, am not one of those people, because I just don't feel the work that's coming out of this particular self-sufficient system warrants much praise (indeed, the only person I know outside of OKP who disagrees with me is my mother).
It's a lot like the people who buy 50 Cent and Britney Spears records; either they don't have better material to compare the stuff to, or they do but don't care. That's how I see it, at least.

355837, he makes black disney movies over and over again - Posted by Torez the Judge, Fri Mar-07-08 10:31 AM

357579, With all the hate I have to admit Posted by urbgriot, Thu Mar-13-08 01:48 PM
Dude runs a well organized and efficient operation that continues to grow and put a lot of Black actors, script writers, sound technicians, ect to work here in Atlanta.. He's building a soundstage in the SWATS and getting more Black people gainfully employed at being performing artist..
I watched "Why Did I Get Married" and enjoyed it, and yeah I think most of his movies, plays, and TV show is ass but I still attempt to support the man, for most importantly the reasons listed above..
He has his niche demographics he caters to and who support him (and it's not just Black church folks either) They were underserved and ignored and Mr. Perry capitalized and more power to the brother.
Spike Lee just donated $350,000 to my and his alma couple that with Rainforest (who has gotten much better) and Dallas Austin and ATL will be lockin down Black films for a minute and I'm proud.
