345367, the incestuous relationship between "OZ"," The Wire" and "Law & Order"
Posted by disco dj, Wed Jan-23-08 08:52 AM
Is it just me or do these shows all have the same casting director ( who HAS to have the worst memory in Hollywood). I can't think of too many people who HAVEN'T been on all three. or at LEAST two of the three. And how ridiculous is it when an actor plays a different character on an old episode of the SAME show?

It's so ridiculous, that it's gotten to the point now where it's a drinking game. Take a shot whenever you see a character from one show on another.

use this post to name actors/characters who've been on at least 2 of the three.

I'll Start:

Seth Gilliam aka Sgt. Ellis Carver on "The Wire" aka Clayton Hughes on "OZ" aka Terrence Wright on "L&O:TBJ" he was also on 'regular' Law & Order once, but I forget the characters name.

add on, couch potatoes.

345368, Never noticed or thought of this

ever
345370, I assume you're clowning me...

surely you've noticed this.

345371, Im sorry, I was really pissed when I made that

It was very uncalled for
345379, nah, I didn't take offense,
Posted by disco dj, Wed Jan-23-08 09:38 AM
I was just preparing myself for the clowneration, ya dig?

345377, i don't think it's anything they need to apologize for
Posted by Orfeo_Negro, Wed Jan-23-08 09:33 AM
i look at a lot of those actors as a kind of repertory company... and with shows like these, producers often prefer to work with actors they know and like.

(btw you can add "Homicide: Life on the Street" to this)
345381, Good point.
Posted by disco dj, Wed Jan-23-08 09:42 AM
>i look at a lot of those actors as a kind of repertory
>company... and with shows like these, producers often prefer
>to work with actors they know and like.

that's a good point. But once they become recognizable, isn't it a bit of a hindrance that might take away from the story? I mean, dude. J.K. Simmons (Vern Schillinger on "OZ" ) plays a friendly Child Psychologist on L&O. A part of me only sees him as the guy that tortured Beecher, ya know?

And when a character plays a memorable role on a show and comes back as somebody else, that REALLY fucks with my head, like the time Courtney B. Vance played a Colin Ferguson ( "Black Rage", remember?) character, only to become ADA Carver on "Criminal Intent"...

I like the idea of a repertory company though. I'd never thought of that angle.

>
>(btw you can add "Homicide: Life on the Street" to this)

*psst* don't tell anybody this, but I've NEVER seen a full episode of it. "NYPD Blue" either.

i think the same thing when i watch any of the spiderman movies.
345386, i've noticed too, i guessed same casting director as well
Posted by inpulse, Wed Jan-23-08 09:51 AM
law & order is really bad about using the same actor to play multiple characters.

it's even more annoying when they have a certain actor as a guest star, and bring them back in the future and add them to the regular cast as someone totally different.
345388, dude, I scream & point at the TV when I see it, now...
Posted by disco dj, Wed Jan-23-08 09:53 AM
Especially if they've played a particularly bizarre role.

I'm WAITING to see Adebisi on either The Wire or L&O.

345473, thats just how you get tested out though, really
Posted by DubSpt, Wed Jan-23-08 01:32 PM
They bring you in, you get cast, somebody remembers you, and then you get a shot for bigger and better things.
345393, aside from OZ, aren't all these shows shot on the East coast

All the L&Os are in NYC
Wire Baltimore
Homicide Baltimore
Oz I think they shot in New Jersey. Not sure.

also a lot of soap opera actors are also on these three shows, again because many of the soaps are filmed in NYC
345402, I think people started to really notice once Homicide hit the air
Posted by nipsey, Wed Jan-23-08 10:46 AM
L&O actors started showing up on Homicide, Homicide actors were in Oz, then Oz actors in SVU and L&O, then L&O actors in CI, then everybody in the Wire.

I don't have a problem with the same actors showing up per se. I just don't like it when shows have an established universe and then use the same actor. Like once Homicide and L&O did the crossover, they became part of the same universe, so they shouldn't overlap actors. Example: Peter Gerety who played Gharty on Homicide showed up in SVU playing a different character. Stuff like that pisses me off. Or Zeljko Ivanek being ADA Danvers on Homicide or being another character on SVU.

But I guess you can blame L&O for everything. They're one primetime show that shoots primarily in NY so they attract every actor in the city. And the casting department apparently like the same people.

Adding to the list: Reed Diamond played a father who teamed with his wife to beat her into a miscarriage in order to send some other guy to jail in and episode of L&O before joining Homicide.

They're the major money behind all three shows, and David Simon has been creatively behind The Wire and Law and Order...

they just really enjoy the actors they hire, so they just keep in the circle purposely...my best friend's JD Williams, and ever since he first auditioned for OZ, they've kept him in the loop...he's been on every almost every project they've been behind, like Homicide, L&O, that show The Beat they had on UPN for like a month, Third Wacth and so have guys like Kirk Acevedo, Seth Gilliam, Eammon ____ (don't remember his last name, Said from OZ), Harold Perrineau, JK Simmons, Lee Tergeson, etc...they've created an ensomble cast that they're comfortable with, and they just run with it...
345405, and if I was playing the drinking game...

Was on Law and Order too.

Don't worry. After The Wire ends, we'll probably never see any of these actors again. Damn shame.

On a completely unrelated note, I was glad to see Amy Ryan get an Oscar nod for Gone Baby Gone.

Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Jan-23-08 11:53 AM
- Omar is in at least two eps of Law & Order and both times he's a jailhouse visit LOL.
- The guy who plays Clay Davis is in at least two eps. In one of them, he's the killer and Bunk is his lawyer. (Bunk shows up in a few other episodes too)
- Idris Elba is in the one with Kerry Washington.
- Daniels is in a couple of them. Once as an African soldier.
- Pearlman has a quick cameo as a beatcop in an early season.
- Bubbles popped up in one.

And that's not including the spinoffs. I'm sure they pop up on those as well, I just don't watch them.

But the same happened with The Sopranos. Pretty much half of the working actors on the East Coast have appeared on a Law & Order somehow. Basically, if you're black or Italian, odds are you'll pop up on a crime show.

345435, well he was AWESOME on an episode of SVU.
Posted by disco dj, Wed Jan-23-08 12:15 PM
>- Omar is in at least two eps of Law & Order and both times
>he's a jailhouse visit LOL.

he was a pimp once who sneaked out of bookings and fled prosecution. AND the Kid who switched place with him in the lockup was Namond, lol.

and in the rich tradition of hilarious quotes from Omar, he laid this gem on Stabler and Benson: "by the time you finish the extradition papers I'll be in the Dominican sipping on a Cuba Libre.."

Richard Belzer, who has been on Law & Order: SVU and Homicide, also makes a cameo in the 7th episode of The Wire this season

Also, I know you said "Hollywood," and that's supposed to be the usual stand-in word for all things perverse in the world of entertainment and all, but those shows are/were produced and shot on the East Coast.

And I really wish y'all would find a different way to describe show biz dealings.

345481, Is he playing "Munch"?
Posted by nipsey, Wed Jan-23-08 02:00 PM
He's already got the record for most shows playing the same character. If he's "Munch" in The Wire, he's just padding his stats like Emmit Smith! And if he is "Munch", that just throws off the whole "universe" I talked about in my above post.

Clark Johnson is in the scene as well... takes place in a cop bar.

"Gus" strolls in and walks right by Belzer.

So you have Lewis walking right by Munch casually.

I got a good chuckle out of it, which I had to explain to the GF who has never seen homicide.

really it's a function of all those shows being shot on the east coast and new york having far fewer shows in production than LA. They all have different casting folks tho, even the law and orders have different casting folks.

the funny thing is that the Law & Order franchise has all these "rules" about when you can do another show in the franchise after you've already done another (like if you've done L&O, how long before you can do SVU or CI) and how long until you can do the same show. Years ago, Dick Wolf was watching the repeats on TNT and in back to back eps saw one actor as the perp and in the very next repeat as a judge or something like that. Lol. there are more actors who have been in multiple eps than you realize. the more recognizable ones of course stick out more. Doing L&O is like a rite of passage for NY actors.

345623, as we type ...

Amelia Chase becomes Casey Novak. It's all the same actress (Diane Neal?)... but yeah, she was EVIL as Amelia.

>like 2 seasons later, she was the assistant DA. SAME CHICK,
>SAME SHOW!!

LOL.

Knight Rider was NOTORIOUS for this shit.

Ann Turkel played a recurring villainess named Adrienne. After she and Garth go over a cliff in GOLIATH...

sometime later, "Adrienne" shows up again in the next season. Bonnie shows Mike her picture, and Michael's like "never seen her before in my life."

K.I.T.T. should have been like "FOH, Michael."

345777, RE: i think its a L&O HBO thing....
Posted by EarthTone, Thu Jan-24-08 01:58 PM
really, it's a NYC actor thing. And for their guest leads and supporting, they look for really strong actors with "names". It's the same, relatively small pool. They usually have to cast like 20 parts an ep for the Law & Orders, so folks are going to be recycled after a while.

It's always fun to see old eps of L&O and you see an actor who was a working actor then but has a much bigger profile now. Like back then you weren't like "oh! that's ellen pompeo!" cos grey's anatomy wasnt even a thought yet or Shane from The L Word, I love the two episodes she did back in the day.
