I guess it was intelligent, but I didn't find it all that complex. And I guess it was well crafted, but not in any way that made me think it deserved a directing nod. In fact I thought the storytelling here was fairly simplistic, in terms of its conflict and resolution. The place where the writing shines is the dialogue. But as Kevin Smith must know by now, witty dialogue does not an amazing movie make.
