Posted by ternary_star, Mon Jun-11-07 10:38 AM
what a waste of film
289905, its a pointless film...
Posted by da_illest_one, Mon Jun-11-07 10:55 AM
whats the point of making a film in which you watch people get tortured for two hours...
It's like Passion of the Christ without a profound message...
Too bad they'll most likely make a Hostel III in 2009...
They're still going to make a silly ass Saw 4 which is just Hostel with bear traps on people's heads...
289906, yeah enough with that shit
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Mon Jun-11-07 10:56 AM
I saw the first one and it wasn't a good story or compelling just really fucking nasty. It was too much of me turning away. I even left the the room a few times. Felt the same way about the first "Saw" ain't see one of them shits since.
290111, HELL NO...we need more of em
Posted by Binlahab, Mon Jun-11-07 04:19 PM
but theres no huge blockbuster market for it

<------ i lean wit it...then i rock wit it
290248, disagree
Posted by crow, Mon Jun-11-07 09:19 PM
While I think hostel sucks, and was actually weak on the gore, I think the concept could have been excellent they just dumbed it down.

The whole idea of the rich buying the right to kill people? Interesting to me

290634, yeah, these glorified, glossy snuff films have been winning for a while
Posted by Mgmt, Tue Jun-12-07 11:21 PM
Devil's Rejects
Hills Have Eyes
Saw, etc.
290688, Puh-lease. There are far worse uses of film these days.
Posted by DawgEatah, Wed Jun-13-07 08:28 AM
I'll take the gore genre over the "remake of a remake" genre or the "hidden racist" tripe they put out on the regular.

Y'all are acting like the genre is making grillions.

289912, good...this genre has been played out and unoriginal since
Posted by Torez, Mon Jun-11-07 11:04 AM
scream II/seven...all this saw/hostel/gorecinema
garbage has been going on way too long.

i dunno, these movies always felt like art
made by people who like the genre but have
nothing original or entertaining to
say, so they just ramp up the fucked up
violence and greusomnest to compensate...

besides THE ABYSS, i can't think of
any horror film in years that has
done anything but gross people the
fuck out in attempts to be scary
or suspensful...

the sooner they bury this genre,
the better.

290296, no, seven and scream II were the progenitors of the saw/hostels
Posted by Torez, Tue Jun-12-07 08:25 AM
since then, all the other knockoffs
have been played out...

290640, Nah, I'd say Cabin Fever kind of started this; Saw expanded it
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Jun-12-07 11:32 PM
Scream brought back the typical horror film. Seven was followed by some darker thrillers but neither was really straight gore like Hostel seems to be.

289960, The Abyss was a horror movie?

The Descent, 28 Days/Weeks Later, The Ring (Ringu), The Abandoned, The Eye, the Dawn of the Dead remake, Audition, etc., are just suspense-less, gross-out fests?

290253, Dawn of the Dead was

290300, dawn of the dead and audition, absolutely
Posted by Torez, Tue Jun-12-07 08:29 AM
of the others, the only ones
i saw were THE RING and 28 DAYS
LATER, which were not.

but my criticism - i should have
been more specific - were at
american based gorefests. 28 DAYS
LATER is not an american movie,
and THE RING was originally japanese.

(and if i recall, the directed is
not american, either)

i should have been more clear, sorry

nor was it just a gore fest since all the gore only came up in the last part of the movie
290641, RE: dawn of the dead
Posted by YourDrunkUncle, Tue Jun-12-07 11:35 PM
I can't believe people in here are shitting on Dawn 04 like this.

First of all, I think it's the best action/horror film since Aliens. Secondly, it's not even gross. The original version with its close-ups of skullcaps slowly getting peeled off is much grosser.

Finally, there's a healthy dose of suspense in that film. When Sarah Polley's character arrives home, and we get that first glimpse of her daughter out in the hallway...when the second set of survivors arrive at the mall with the dashing zombies in hot pursuit...when the mall crew is forced to secure the basement aka attack of the legless zombie playing monkey bars...the Andy rescue attempt...

Are you guys just writing this film off because it's a remake?
290676, I loved Dawn of the Dead 04'
Posted by Paps Smear, Wed Jun-13-07 05:56 AM
on these boards though if it ain't artsy fartsy then it gets no love anyway. I go to horror site boards when I want to talk about these movies. Cats on here just seem to hate about anything that someone else enjoys
290976, the movie in your avatar was damn good
Posted by Mgmt, Thu Jun-14-07 01:29 AM
I know that much, even with the stupid ending. THAT movie was scary, IMO.
291013, that shit was immense comedy
Posted by will_5198, Thu Jun-14-07 08:36 AM
my friends and I laughed through the entire thing

like the pregnancy shootout? lmao
289954, I liked the first one, but I don't really have a desire to see this
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jun-11-07 11:58 AM
It feels like an unnecesarry sequel that was only made because the first one turned a profit.
289959, damn, why the Tarantino hate?
Posted by BigWorm, Mon Jun-11-07 12:00 PM
Granted I haven't been a big fan of Tarantino for a few years now...probably since Jackie Brown. And I thought Death Proof had major faults.

But...

The way folks talk around here, it's like dude's box office failure is his comeuppance for being a bully in high school.

I mean damn. I gave up on John Singleton a long time ago, but it doesn't mean I have something personal against the man, like "Nigga I just wanna see you fail in life hahahahahahahah!"

289970, you've been away, Worm...
Posted by Orfeo_Negro, Mon Jun-11-07 12:07 PM
you missed out on all the drama

let's just say that among a certain contingent in PTP, Tarantino is the antithesis of all that is cool, honest and niggery.
290057, Can three people be a legitimate contingent?
Posted by Premiere, Mon Jun-11-07 02:20 PM
That seems like something that needs to be seven, minimum.
290062, there's like 3 real carnival barkers
Posted by Orfeo_Negro, Mon Jun-11-07 02:33 PM
but they have a bunch of acolytes who often mill around and cheer whenever they're hitting their groove.

these people would never DREAM of voicing an opinion on their own, of course... but the zest and excitement with which they cosign the Big Three makes them accomplices, i think.

289969, Basically. Tarantino's career is in the toilet right now.
Posted by jambone, Mon Jun-11-07 12:07 PM
Tarantino still basking in Pulp Fiction glory.

A nerd who suddenly became cool forgot that he still a nerd.

290006, Don't forget Eli Roth
Posted by Flash80, Mon Jun-11-07 01:09 PM
Hostel was over top blood and guts, but I thought Jay Hernandez's character was great. Oh, and the naked women didn't hurt either, a subtle nod to anyone who's been to that part of Europe.

But from reading the Hostel 2 reviews, it sounds like the only thing change Tarantino/Roth made to the plot was swap 3 guy backpackers with 3 girl backpackers this time. No thanks.
290009, I saw Hostel II yesterday.
Posted by Clark Kent, Mon Jun-11-07 01:19 PM
it was much different from the first one and it was about 10 times better...I thought the first one was garbage.

290090, Oceans 13 IS strong competition...
Posted by rhymesandammo, Mon Jun-11-07 03:32 PM
There are no big name actors in Hostel 2, unless you consider Roger Bart a "big name". Oceans 13 has Al-fuckin'-Pacino, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, etc.

Knocked Up is the best reviewed major studio film of the year so far. Pirates, Shrek & Surf's Up are kid's movies and are in more theaters than Hostel.

The fact is, this was released at the wrong time - Sept. or Oct. would have been a better market. I expected it to place around #5, it placed at #6. Oh well.

BTW, I just found out today Fantastic 4/Silver Surfer is rated PG...the fuck?
290091, white people loved part one
Posted by post_office, Mon Jun-11-07 03:33 PM
because they thought it was funny. i didnt find it funny. i found it to be up there with armageddon on the boring scale. i think they liked it because they were familiar w the director or creator or sumshit. white people are idiots

290229, Why release in the Summer?
Posted by JusticeSabre, Mon Jun-11-07 08:16 PM
Especially alongside Pirates, Die Hard and Fantastic Four?

These films should be a Fall/Winter thing ONLY.
290237, I think the first one did so well...
Posted by rhymesandammo, Mon Jun-11-07 08:36 PM
...because it came out in January. I guess they figured because it did so well in January, picked up a large fanbase and garnered large DVD sales that it would translate into summer movie success.
