271960, I'm officially going to graduate school for theater studies.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Apr-10-07 01:17 AM
Ohio State accepted me, and I sent in my acceptance of admission.

I shopped around for jobs first, but I figured two more years of intensive study and making connections for jobs couldn't hurt.

So yeah. It's all happening.
271961, Yo, Longo, that's great, congra-- *record scratches* -- Ohio State?

At least they made two championship games this year.

All jokes aside, their program is really strong. They feed directly into the Cincinnati Playhouse and many other acclaimed regional theaters.

I don't know if that's what I'll end up doing (probably not at first), but the connections I can get there should be really valuable too.
271965, Thanks for kickin' us when we're down, Frank. 'Ppreciate it.

I'm from Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville is the biggest city land-wise in the country. We have a population of a couple million people, and we're constantly growing. However, our theatre community is rather small. There are two community theaters and one dinner theater. Nothing that seats more than 150 people or so.

I went to visit my ex-girlfriend in Ohio where she was in Beauty and the Beast in the small town of Mansfield. In this tiny town, a population of around 50,000, they had a regional theater that seated 1,400, and did a pretty good job of filling it.

For me, this was a whole new world. We have trouble filling the community theaters in Jacksonville. They really love theater in the Midwest.

I went and toured Ohio State and really dug the facility. They have one of the best playscript libraries in the nation, and several outstanding theaters, both on-campus and in the community of Columbus. Plus, they are still a school with good sports, so I can keep from going completely insane into the world of theater. :)

A factor at the time was also that my now ex-girlfriend goes to law school there, so that would have been a welcome addition to get into this great school where my girlfriend is. Now we're broken up, and while we don't have any intention of getting back together, we've been speaking and are on friendly terms, so it won't be too awkward (plus, OSU is a HELL of a big campus, and even if we weren't on friendly terms, the odds of me running into her would be slim).

So while it's no Carnegie Mellon or something along those lines, it'll provide me with an intensive 2-year program where I'll get to dig deeper into the aspects of theater I'm really interested in (acting, directing, writing plays, writing scholarly criticism).

Eventually, maybe this will give me the knowhow to become an artistic director of a theater, or perhaps to even start my own community theater. Those would be my ideal end results.

272015, Great news.

I thought I would take a job after college to save up for grad school, and got waylaid by the financial world.

I'm officially envious.

272065, is it a general theater studies MFA?
Posted by iagoali, Tue Apr-10-07 12:30 PM
what kind of specific things are you going to be studying?
do you pick a concentration to focus on?

i did my MFA in dramatic writing, and i loved it.
still struggling to find out how to make a living off it, but i loved.
start getting involved with theaters right away.
the business is all who you know.
well, not all. but lots.

congrats, man
272147, It's a general theater studies MA.

>what kind of specific things are you going to be studying?

I'm definitely going to dive as far into directing as possible, and continue studies of acting, dramatic writing, and text analysis, things of that nature.

I do believe I'll be picking a concentration, but I'm not sure what yet.

Also, I'll have to write a thesis during my 2nd year, about a to-be-determined subject.

No, it's pretty much all who you know, lol. I do well in Jacksonville, Florida mostly because I'm friends with the right people, I'd wager.

I've met a few NYC people and I'm tight with Emanuel Azenberg, so if I need a job in NYC or another big city, I'm sure I could get one. I'll probably more realistically go into teaching while directing or acting in shows in regional or community theaters. I'm not 1000% sure that the NYC struggle is the lifestyle for me, or if it is, I'd like to have a good nest egg to fall back on.

>congrats, man

Thanks. Where did you graduate from?

undergrad in dramatic and cultural studies (my made-up concentration) from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study

MFA in dramatic writing (concentration in playwriting) from THE Tisch School of The Arts
272599, We need to start a serious post about plays.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Apr-11-07 11:48 PM
I'm just now building my playscript library to the point where it might soon rival my DVD library.

As an aspiring director and someone who likes to write some as well, I've really taken to trying to get my hands on as many scripts as possible.
272699, if you do it, i'll be there.
