The thing is this - the first half of the movie with Jabba the Hutt and his legion of monsters scared the shit out of kids. Especially on the big screen. So the Ewoks appearing in the 2nd half was somewhat of a soft cushion for any kids who had been traumatized. They were cute, but not annoying.
