Part of the reason why there's a lack of an emotional/dramatic grounding is Veronica was not involved personally in the mystery as much as she was in the first 2 seasons. Season 3 has sort of become more of Veronica as a professional, as limited as that term is here, than getting thrown into it because of her social relationships.
