154754, TV Show Guilty Pleasures....and if you CAN explain...why??
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Tue Feb-21-06 05:23 PM
Dharma and Greg - WTF? It's a sitcom where the reruns usually run mid-afternoon, about an odd couple who fell in love, got married (Fools Rush In-style), and hijinx happens due to their differences. It sounds so lame and run-of-the-mill, but... I love this f--kin show!

7th Heaven - It's like a modern day Waltons, or Little House on the Prairie. A preacher father, a stay home mother...7 terrific, perfect children, and the issues range from...Simon might've taken a bag of gummi bears from my dresser, so how do we found out the truth without possibly causing trust issues? I don't know WHAT it is/was about this show that had me and ol'girl watching it, but I used to come home from my lunchbreak like "What'd I miss??".

Add on
154758, Grey's Anatomy and King of the Hill
Posted by NoShelter, Tue Feb-21-06 05:37 PM
GA - I started watching it because my female roommate started watching it and we only have one TV in the house, that and I heard it was written by a black women (which i guess is the reason why you have 3 competent black people in charge at the hospital). Yeah I know its basically a chick show, and i can't stand an extended sequence with Meredith in it, but for some reason I'm kinda hooked (the 2nd part of the bomb episode was off the chain), but this last episode with George gettin some hit the GTFOHWTBS mark and I have to seriously re-think me watching that show.

KOTH - Initially did not like this show, could not relate to it. But the more I watch the more I apperciate it. Without a doubt King of the Hill has the most realistic side-characters on TV, I'm not talking about the main crew, I'm talking about the inhabitants of Arlen, the barbers, the rednecks, the burned out high schoolers and college kids. They are done so realistically its unreal, everyone has met 30 or so people like the characters on King of the Hill. Plus the combination of Dale Gribble and Bill are a top 20 TV character. When they are on, they are absolutely hilarious.
154806, George gettin some was plausible
Posted by magilla vanilla, Tue Feb-21-06 07:20 PM
Grey didn't explain why she couldn't go on a date with him, and he sprung that on her at a point where she didn't give a fuck anymore. Which kinda sucks for him.

I mean, uh. . ..
154810, plus Meredith is just a big ol' hoochie
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Feb-21-06 07:35 PM
George better enjoy it while it lasts. It's only gonna end in heartache.

154863, Double true.

He got what he wanted, but not really.

But at least he got some. He deserved it. Korev, for example, does not.
154824, King of the Hill is not a guilty pleasure.
Posted by Ryan M, Tue Feb-21-06 08:02 PM
I think I hear RJCC coming in here to immolate you.
176696, whats guilty about King of the Hill?
Posted by DubSpt, Sat Apr-29-06 04:36 PM
Seems okay to me.

I think most "guilty" pleasures are soap operaesque shows or anything where you watch people much better off than you acting crazy. Like Super Sweet 16. Now THAT is a guilty pleasure.

I don't know how to explain it, but reruns of this show have been beating out the Seinfeld/Simpsons hour for a while now.

I don't really know how to explain it, but maybe its related to the fact that I had a bad fever once, and found myself totally engrossed in an Anne of Green Gables marathon.
154782, Oh, man...I LOVED Anne of Green Gables.
Posted by kurlyswirl, Tue Feb-21-06 06:31 PM
...back when I was a kid and it ran on the Disney Channel and PBS all the time. I had such a crush on the guy who played Gilbert Blythe. lol

And it made me read that entire series!

That is the second most fucked up family I've ever seen in my life (the first being the Crumbs).

I think the show must have a bunch of writers who aren't christian and just like to make everyone do fucked up things to each other.

The mother is straight out INSANE.

Some of the best entertainment on telivision.

The only thing cornier than a magician is a magician singing his own theme song.

But I get completely caught up in this shit, *convinced* that I'm gonna figure out his secrets. Last week I learned how to levitate though, so at least I'm getting something out of it.
155886, thats a great show
Posted by HighVoltage, Fri Feb-24-06 06:36 PM
that intro with him singing is corny as hell, but hes an incredible magician.
154814, Gilmore Girls
Posted by CMcMurtry, Tue Feb-21-06 07:46 PM
It's not a show I go out of my way to watch, but if I'm home and it's on, I will always tune in.

As for why:
- good writing
- solid acting
- attractive women in the lead roles
154823, you are not alone
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Feb-21-06 08:01 PM
I don't watch it regularly, but my wife does, and every so often I find myself getting sucked in... and liking it.

The dialogue is a bit much, but in small doses I dig it. Star's Hollow is officially the whitest town on Earth, fictional or otherwise.

Still can't believe Luke's got a kid.
154858, hey, they have one asian

I started getting hooked, and JUST when it was about to over/done deal...something happend. I think I stopped catching it or something.

Almost had me.
176662, Yeah unfortunately the recent episodes are lacking those qualities
Posted by JungleSouljah, Sat Apr-29-06 11:08 AM
Writing has gone rather downhill as has the acting. It almost seems like the actors are tired of their roles and they're just mailing it in for the fans and for their checks.
176706, last week's episode was okay
Posted by magicmedicine, Sat Apr-29-06 06:01 PM

yeah, gilmore girls is my guilty pleasure.

Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Feb-21-06 08:11 PM
Maybe it is one long ass Sears commercial, but even the most cynical of souls cannot deny this show's good nature.

And now they got a new one coming out where they actually fix PEOPLE!

Come to think of it... shouldn't they have been doing that in the first place? All this time you coulda fixed Billy's legs, but instead you just gave him a fabulous foyer? The fuck?
154846, i just wish they could do it a little more....
Posted by okaycomputer, Tue Feb-21-06 09:34 PM
i don't know...straightforward? Especially the double episodes...they throw so much fake, corny shit into the middle that it takes away from the true nature of what they're actually doing.
154849, I think they help push up the prices of Sears products

154826, *sigh* Yes, Dear.
Posted by Ryan M, Tue Feb-21-06 08:04 PM
I was convinced this show sucked without having seen it. I mean, it's got Mike O'Malley of GUTS fame. How good could it be? Mostly it sucks and it's a ripoff and a hybrid of every other popular sitcom with the same type setup (King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc.) but I watch it cause it's on like 12 times a day and it's funny at times.
154852, I watch that one too...
Posted by okaycomputer, Tue Feb-21-06 09:39 PM
I have to route for Mike O'Malley, he's from my home town.

You're right though, it mostly sucks, but is strangely addicting.
155875, RE: *sigh* Yes, Dear.

154854, Roseanne is a good go-to-sleep show
Posted by okaycomputer, Tue Feb-21-06 09:42 PM
it's funny enough to fall asleep to (plus nick-at-night runs it from 7pm to 7am with a little Fresh Prince thrown in for spice).

You don't really have to pay attention because they're all the same episode and you'll get a few chuckles and be lights out in under 10 minutes.
154855, Don't get me started on that Oxygen Network.

Something about seeing how horribly fucking tacky these people's homes can get is just irresistible.

And so far the absolute best ones I've seen, as in I'd actually like to live there myself, are Eric Koston and some model chick who happened to marry an architect so her home was like a goddam museum of genius architecture. Otherwise it's usually just god-awful tackiness and I can never resist it.

I also check for their True Life show a bit, too.
156446, double true on the tackiness...damn...so tacky

lol, im not really sure why. I dig the setting, living in that environment, with a small community in the middle of nowhere, no technology. sounds corny, but it's just a wholesome show. haha, i always get made fun of for watching that show.

and i really like those home makeover shows...none of that extreme makeover ones/trading spaces shows. but the old school ones like bob villa, hometime, and this old house...ive been watching them since i was 7. They go in detail and I really like following along the whole way of the project. I've learned a lot about home building from that.

and I Love Lucy will always be my favorite TV show, no explaination for that.

Boston Legal...again, this show sucks too....but it's funny and i always find myself sucked in...

i been watchin Love Inc every week since i finally gave on my other GP show, smallville..i don't know if it's heathy to replace one bad thing with another, but i wanna roll out wit every woman on that show...i be staring at holly robinson thinking she'll never get old....

That show is crack to me. It just be calling too meeee.

I feel guilty thinking, "Man...thats someone's loved one laying there pixilated in a puddle of blood, just discarded like garbage." It really hurts my heart how cruel people can be to each other.

But its fucking fascinating watching the detectives work. I don't care much for their opinions or personalities (although I DO like the Miami guys and the Detroit lady) but the method is absorbing.

I guess I just hate that someone's pain is my enjoyment.

I also watch in complete amazement at how spot on the book "Network" was in predicting television as it exists right now, with shows like The First 48 being a prime example.
