149086, Seriously, In Living Color was a pretty bad show.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Feb-05-06 06:10 AM
Watching that marathon the other day (I've been watching it over the week cause I DVR'd a bunch of em), I realized this.

Now, it has it's moments. The Dirty Dozens, Wanda, Homie The Clown (for the most part), Arsenio, and so on are all good sketches. The musical guests were great (Public Enemy, 3rd Bass, Tribe, and so on). But damn I had such a romanticized view of the show from when I was a kid.

I thought that was just from the first season when I got the DVD and I was like, "Uh, that was kinda weak". But the show was pretty lame throughout. Here's why:

- David Allen Grier: NOT FUNNY. Well, sometimes he's alright. Same with Tommy Davidson. On the whole - NOT FUNNY.

- The sketches go on TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAMN LONG.

- When Damon Wayans and Jim Carrey aren't on, usually the sketch isn't so good.

There's other reasons, but these are the ones of note. I know that obviously the material is dated, but I can't hold that against the show of course. I mean, I think Chappelle's Show will hold up 10 years from now. SNL certainly does.

Sidenote - early 1990's fashion was awful. I knew that already, but wow. I'd forgotten most of it.

Another sidenote - the Spike's Joint sketch was HILARIOUS. But it didn't seem like anyone got it in the audience. Didn't people watch Do The Right Thing?
149087, I'm sorry that's incorrect

it may not be as funny TO SOME PEOPLE...but that shit is still funny..i catch a rerun ery now and then...

everybody on the first couple a casts was funny...
149089, I agree wholeheartedly
Posted by mc_delta_t, Sun Feb-05-06 07:04 AM
I bought the season 1 DVD's when they came out remembering it as one of the best sketch comedies ever...........

well, I thought, maybe they hit their stride in season two...........

nope, season 3?

uh................no
149092, a lot of early SNL stuff does not (for me)

149207, yep
Posted by DrNO, Sun Feb-05-06 06:28 PM
and then in comparison to what SCTV was doing at the same time it's even worse.
149093, I don't think SNL or Chappelle hold up well either
Posted by Ason, Sun Feb-05-06 08:52 AM
I can already look back and see the straight cheapness of the set and stuff on Chappelle and see it doesn't hold up.

You know what does hold up? Monty Python

they did that show in the damn 60's and 70's and it's STILL
hilarious (except for the cartoon shit but even that was ground breaking at the time)

prove me wrong
149204, Yup.

nobody, NOBODY does a shady old black man better than he does.

Loomis Simmons? Joe Jackson? Anytime buddy does either one of those dudes, i was in tears

The first two seasons of In living Color hold up really well (actually MUCH better than i thought they would).

Hey, to each their own i guess
149151, I'll admit he has some funny characters.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Feb-05-06 02:25 PM
He's funny in Men on ____, he's funny as that blues singer, and some other characters. But he just gets on my nerves...perhaps it's partly because his stand up is extremely unfunny. Perhaps it's because his persona is just irritating. But I don't find the dude funny at all.
149114, Shit. For me, DAG is the funniest dude on there.

149142, Posts like these are why I don't have many white friends
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Feb-05-06 01:24 PM

Well, there are a lot of reasons I don't have a lot of
white friends.

But posts like this are indicative of how different white and black people see the world.

Don't get me wrong -- there are some black people who will agree with you. I'm not gonna pigeonhole all anti-In Living Color views as "white."

But definitely there is a cultural element to the type of humor one
appreciates, and some of that, in part, is impacted by race, at least in this country.

I say that because 95% of SNL is completely unfunny to me.

I mean today SNL.

I mean Chris Farley SNL.

I mean Dana Carvey SNL.

I mean Belushi SNL.

Most of that shit is completely unfunny.

In living color, on the other hand, was fucking brilliant.

Then, and now.

And saying that David Allen Grier isn't funny is just....wow.
149153, Why do you have to make this a racial post? Honestly?

...a slob. Carvey was okay. I don't know enough about Belushi. I heard he was good. But really, in terms of Carvey and Farley, none of them compare to what was on In Living Color. They are not even in the same league.
149325, no. they were all funny.

I LOVED it, which is why I bought the dvds

I used to quote that shit constantly, it was one of the funniest shows int he world to me

but, something changed, in me I guess

I watch it now, and I just do.not.laugh

well, I laugh a little at some skits, but 99.9% of it is just completely unfunnny to me now

even the skits I used to love!

In Living Color was so funny, it is the reason I never really found the Chappelle Show THAT funny. I thought it was okay, but never understood all they hype the Chappelle Show got, when In Living Color was the standard. SNL has been dead since Eddie Murphy left. Its is putrid. Maya Rudolph and Darrell Hammond is keeping that show on life-support, because the rest of the show is dead.
149156, SNL sucks now, but to say it sucked after Eddie left is crazy.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Feb-05-06 02:30 PM
It's had a couple of rebirths since then.
149157, when? I mean top-to-bottom when it was hilarious? Get real.
Posted by jambone, Sun Feb-05-06 02:35 PM
149158, Top to bottom no sketch show has been hilarious.

149155, To all you who disagree....
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Feb-05-06 02:29 PM
I honestly have to ask (non condescendingly) if you've seen the show recently.

The reason for that is because I remember when the ILC 1st season DVD came out and there were quite a few people on here who were like, "Uh, wow, I remember this being way better." I know it's rerun on BET and stuff (and actually that's how I saw it even though I own the first season), but...I distinctly remember a bunch of people being dissapointed. Although other people were riding for it.
149220, i understamd if you don't like the show anymore BUT
Posted by Calico, Sun Feb-05-06 08:25 PM
why do you take issue wit folx who still DO?? i watched an ep the other week..it was still funny..OF COURSE some of the jokes were dated. nut it was still funny...hell, i laughed at a rerun of MadTV the other day and i never thought that would happen although i've basically thought every cast member since the show began was a funny person...
149162, The reason you dont find In Living Color is
Posted by BlacKnightSC, Sun Feb-05-06 02:55 PM
because most of those jokes were made in references to that time. Unless you have a good memory and your mindset had not changed since, of course your not going to get or be tempted to laugh at many of the skits. Thats with all comedy shows...Chappelle's Show is also bound to the same rules. The over the top comedy the show relies on wont be percieved the same in ten years...and thus a lot of the humor will be lost on the next generation or us when we grow up and realize how stupid and silly the jokes are. You can quote me on all that...and im not saying Chappelle aint funny, cause it is.
149164, Eh, that works for the topical sketches.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Feb-05-06 03:00 PM
IE Arsenio Hall, Love Connection, etc.

But that's discouting the staying power of the non-topical ones. You might be right, but there are non-topical sketches in SNL from 10-15 years ago that I still find funny. There are non-topical sketches from Chappelle's Show that I could see being funny 10 years from now (although obviously I can't KNOW that).
149169, obviously, you don't like david alan grier
Posted by jahlove7, Sun Feb-05-06 03:18 PM
because that brotha was funny as hell on that show, and in a lot of the roles he's done since then.

imo, "in living color" was funny as hell then, and still is. how you can discount a show that has both paul mooney and franklin ajaye doing the writing is beyond me. (the same writers for richard pryor) if anything, "in living color" proved they were still on their game. granted, the show started to fall off after season three, but the first three years of that show can stand up to any snl any day of the week.
149175, nah. disagree totally.
Posted by araQual, Sun Feb-05-06 03:39 PM
ILC is a classic.
n Dave Allen Grier not funny?? all i will do is point u to his "breasteses"-obsessed character, the dude who always yells out "i gotta HAAAYVE it!"

Tommy Davidson is effin hilarious too.

and ive never really liked SNL.
