131901, I take back what I said about 'Minority Report'
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Dec-18-05 04:20 AM
Just got through my second viewing.

Definately a B-/B film and not a C-/C film as I had it rated before.

See, I's an open minded original man, god.

I can change my views of shit. I said I'd give it another chance, and yeah, it proved to be a bit better than my first viewing. Me no close-mind-o.

Maybe it was just the "Cruise Factor" as Big Reg or someone said...his presence tends to remove a star from movies off top. No hating, but he's just that annoying.

It still wasn't great though. It had that "inside job" hook to it, but it wasn't as good as 'Gattaca' in that regard....'Gattaca' had a more interesting hook and re-visited the broader philosophical implications better....in Gattaca, the crime was more about the bigger issue of nature/nuture....in 'Minority Report' the cause/effect issue all led up to the crime....yeah...let me phrase that better:

In 'Gattaca', the murder mystery fed the greater philosophical point.

In 'Minority Report' the philosophical point fed the murder mystery.

I think the former is doper and more important because the murder mystery was mastered half a century ago and we don't need no mo cute murder mysteries. What we might need is a murder mystery that says something interesting about humanity and the world.

That is why 'Gattaca' is A/A+ and 'Minority Report' B-/B.

'Minority Report' still had one of the great beginnings I've ever seen....what a fabulous beginning. The action was well sequenced....was paced fairly well...good acting outside of Tom Cruise...pretty cool concept...a nice, cool, clean "whodunnit" movie.

Oh, and 'Minority Report' still ain't shit compared to 'I Robot', so fuck y'all. And please...I'm trying to hear you rationalze a statement like "Will Smith played Will Smith and not the character in I, Robot'" yet won't say the same thing about Tom Cruise in 'Minority Report'. 'Minority Report' protagonist was the same muffucka, exactly, that was in Mission:Impossible. Hell, same dude as Jerry Mcgwire for that matter. Like I said, that Will Smith criticism is just racism/haterism.

But let's stay on topic and shit. 'Minority Report' was on some decent shit, god.

so 'i. robot' is an A then?
my criticism of the movie really has nothing to do with will smith. i think visually its a movie of its time. as in, i don't think in the long run it will stand the test of time.
i loved the story and concept of the movie definitely. i don't however think it got even close to its potential as a final product.
and speaking of product, the amount of in your face 'lets just put this on screen for no reason' product placement really got too much after awhile.

n i don't care what anyone says. i enjoy the cruiser as an actor. i don't really understand the hate and where it started but i think consistently he does entertaining movies that i am more than happy to shell out some cash and go see.

131984, somebody explain this movie to me
Posted by colonelk, Sun Dec-18-05 02:06 PM
Because it seemed to be completely stupid. Maybe it's just over my head.

-Why does the old lady have evil Little Shop of Horrors plants?
-How can Tom Cruise drive a car right out off the assembly line and onto the freeway?
-Why the hell does he need to cut his eyes out again? Especially when he uses those very same eyes to open the door to his office.
-Why is everybody (old lady, Tim Blake Nelson, Skarsgaard, etc.) mugging like it is an SNL sketch?

I'd love to hear some satisfactory answers to these questions, but I maintain they do not exist.

This is one of the worst films I've ever seen (with a very, very good opening sequence).

She's a herbologist in the future. Those fighting plants she grew were a security system to keep intruders out.

This is an interesting question. Maybe that's how efficient we will become in the future.

Because eye IDs are checked literally EVERYWHERE he can go. If he has those eyes, the cops will find him before he even gets a chance to sneak into the place.

Making cars easier to steal = efficiency? Face it, that was just the moronic climax to the worst action sequence in any of Spielberg's films. Colin Ferrel (sp?) pumping his fist in frustration as Cruise pops out from under the seat somehow and drives right out of the factory is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.

The grotesque, exaggerated characters in, say, Clockwork have a purpose. They are how Alex sees adults of the world and help him (and the audience) justify his violence towards them. Tom Cruise does not see the world in such a way. Instead he just seems surrounded by ridiculous people.

But why wouldn't the cops get an alarm saying, "Scientologist entering office," when he used his own eyes to enter?
132110, It actually makes sense when you think about it.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Dec-18-05 06:28 PM

They were so preoccupied with him running, that they didn't register the office alarms...they didn't assume he would come back to his actual office at the department of precrime.

They were concentrated on scoping out the city and searching in public places. The last place they'd thought he'd go is back in the belly of the beast. When they figured that out, he was already in that piece.

One of those obvious guy slip ups that even happen in the future. I could see that happening.

132125, then those cops are seriously dumb
Posted by colonelk, Sun Dec-18-05 06:40 PM
And the whole eye episode was pointless and annoying. The idea of retina scans in retail stores is cool. Just have a two minute scene of Cruise buying some special contacts from a (restrained) Skarsgaard and get on with the story.

Instead we have Cruise chasing his eyeballs down some stairs.

And, of course, I haven't even touched on the ending.
132135, Oh yeah, it was over the top, but...
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Dec-18-05 07:02 PM

....contacts wouldn't work, nor would replacing the retina specifically, because it was tried once and the current alarms are sensitive to the presence of scar tissue on the retina. That is why an entire eye exchange was necessary.

As far as the cops being stupid, well, hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes common sense ain't so common - If you see a dude sprint off and run, it makes sense to assume that he'll try and run. In the heat of the moment, its hard to think of why he would come back right away.

In fact, they did figure out that he'd come back...so they weren't that stupid, they just figured out a bit too late. Dude was already in the room with the precog shorty.

The society identifies individuals through the retinal pattern. By changing his eyes, he's able to go undetected. He does need his original eyes to access certain things at the dept of pre-crime.

They are silly. Spielberg spent all this time and money with engineers and designers to try and depict what the future would "really be like" (and in some cases, like the mall, did a convincing job), but then he includes stuff like these plants that would feel cartoonish even in an X-Men movie.

Eh, it's not really the worst film I've ever seen. But the sense of betrayel is greater because I know Spielberg is capable of making a much better film out of this same scenario.

It's implausible because there is no good reason for it to be possible. This is lazy writing defended by "it's the future, things are different."

However, I've never really compared the two movies the way you have. They've always been independent of each other in my mind.

To me, Minority Report is a cool stylistic, futuristic, cop/crime, mystery who done it, with some very nice visuals and art design that raises questions about a flawed legal system.

Gattaca is about human nature and the human spirit. It's about who we are, who we want to be, and how the world (or environment)
we live in can either facilitate, discourage, or prevent entirely our personal success. Vincent transcends his plight because regardless of
the way the world sees him, he still believes in himself. But with Jerome, he has or rather had it all, but was lacking that spirit/desire which comes from somewhere on the inside and is imeasurable. All the crime stuff in Gattaca for me, is there to provide a framework and help bring out the human story.

I think you broke down the differences quite well.

... was what did the movie in for me. So you have the mother, a poor, rundown, cast-off of society who might potentially be a problem because her daughter is the seer or whatever. Fine. But why the fuck would you murder her, when murder is the one crime they look in the future for? Why not just dope her up, or lock her away, or give her some kind of fucked up brain surgery, or something like that? Why the fuck would you commit the ONE crime they're going to see? And if you're the most powerful man in the city who can pull mad strings in relation to all kinds of things, why the fuck would you commit the murder yourself? You can't get some degenerate druggy to do it for you? That's the only way you can think of doing it?

So yeah, the beginning was all right, but as the mystery started unfolding I was just hating this movie. I am a little predisposed to shit on Spielberg movies, though -- I'll admit to that. I expect a lot more from my sci-fi than this, though.

Gotta be careful w/ Colin Farrell flicks. After Minority Report I thought he was on his way 2 being 1 of the best young actors in the biz. I went back & watched Tigerland & was even more convinced. But 2 this day it's still his best performance which is upseting considering the potential he's shown.

I thought he was great in Hart's War which is a pretty underated flick. Terrance Howard fans should certainly check it out. American Outlaws & Phone Booth are watchable tho his accent is terrible in the latter which was shocking condsidering how convincing his accent was in Tigerland.

I enjoyed The Recruit & thought he did a pretty good job in it alongside Pacino. Also did a good job w/ the material he had 2 work w/ in Daredevil. 1 of the more entertaining on screen comic book villians just not enough screen time. Nice cameo in Veronica Guerin. Should've taken on a larger part however insteada signing on 4 Alexander but hindsite is 20/20. SWAT was forgettable but he was excellent in his next 2 flicks Intermission & Home @ the End of the World. Only 2 follow that up w/ Alexander. Inconsistent as hell but when he's good he's still 1 of the better young actors working 2day. Not sure why he's so hated other than the rep for boozing & womanizing which I have no problem w/ since he's so honest about it. I havent written him off yet.
132856, Oh no, I have no apriori hatred of Colin Farrell.

I have no doubt he's a talented actor.

Its just that because 'Alexander' is the cause of global warming, I can't forgive anyone who had anything to do with that film very easily. It hurt the human species and caused me personal grief. Yes it did.

1 of my favorite opening sequences of all time. Right up there w/ Memento.

special effects were great...

but they completely squandered what could have been an interesting idea - pre-determining someone's guilt *before* they commit a crime. instead they made a by-the-numbers chase/action movie.

you could've replaced the pre-cog idea with any "dude being chased" plot and it would've been the same exact movie.

and i fucking *hated* (hated, hated, HATED!) the weird, avant-garde, over-acted, out-of-place 2nd tier performances (black market eye surgeon, plant geneticist lady, pre-cog-obsessed lab guy). tom cruise was doing is patented tom cruise thing and then he's in the same scene with these cheesy b-movie-level performances. it was jarring and laughably bad.

and it was all capped-off by the standard spielbergian shitty ending...

I mean, exact.

You guys are jerks -- you are supposed to be encouraging my change of heart. Instead you keep making these good points affirming my former opinion. Lol.

Trying to keep an open mind........

132964, did "War of The Worlds" have anything to do with it?

i liked the ending of WOTW, and i think its better that minority report. both had cruise, spielberg, tripods, and both were blue.

Just watched Minority Report again, and here are some thoughts...

The ending- So growing their hair out long and reading books in the middle of nowhere suddenly cures the pre-cogs of their nightmares? The little soliloquy from Agatha allows Tom Cruise and his wife to have another baby, when 6 years of mourning wasn't enough for him to get over it? And... Tom Cruise's role is the cop, not his wife? No? How does she so easily get into the prison?

And why does the system have to be perfect? Since when has anyboy ever had the idea that the justice system is even close to being perfect? I'd have to imagine that in 50 years the justice system will be just as fucked up as ever. Since when is the system being absolutely flawless absolutely necessary? Just prevent the murders on the visions that didn't match (unless they were alll murders by Lamar, I might've missed that) and stop the rest on the visions that match. And also... couldn't they put up a system where they just stop the murders and let the people go on a yellow card red card basis? I mean, they're stopping the murders anyway, and if it's a passion of crime, I doubt they're gonna do it again anyway. And if they do, just stop they asses again and put them away then.

And also, it's limited to the District of Columbia in what way? In terms of location? Cuz that's what it seemed like from the beginning scene, and how familiar the cops were with the city. Or is it the people? Cuz if it's location... First of all, just murder agatha's mom out of city limits.

And I really liked this movie when I first saw it. The ending just got me mad. Madder than the ending of SWAT.

As if the rest of the movie was flawless up until the plane landed on the bridge?

>The ending- So growing their hair out long and reading books

their precog power is limited by range, which is why they only picked up murders in DC and not NY or LA. So if they're out on an island in the middle of nowhere they won't sense anymore precog murders and will be left in peace.

But everybody WANTS it to be perfect. That's the point: what price are we willing to pay for a "perfect" system?
