128091, this post was inevitable. but...
Posted by dro, Fri Dec-09-05 01:25 PM
...i think at this point, the us version has become something of its own, and if anything, an adaptation of the original plot lines, but has taken them even further past their subued british humor to american craziness.
128093, They are too different to compare at this point.
Posted by Melanism, Fri Dec-09-05 01:29 PM
The UK one is better solely based on the performance of Ricky Gervais.

BUT

The US has been great this season by doing something that the BBC didn't...fleshing out the other minor characters. I mean Angela is becoming one of the best characters on that show.

Posted by bignick, Fri Dec-09-05 02:17 PM
and the whole idea that it's unfair to compare them is just silly.
128130, its a different show now though
Posted by dro, Fri Dec-09-05 02:45 PM
gone are the basic plots adapted from the bbc, and while the basic character traits remain, the characters have been developed further (yes, the bbc version was only a total of 13 eps, so it wasn't really a goal of the show to develop characters, but this only furthers the argument that they're different shows now.)

also, on a different observational note, dawn and lee being together in real life seems like more of a reality than pam and roy (?). maybe because dawn talks about him more than pam does.
128132, it is a TV show though, right?
Posted by bignick, Fri Dec-09-05 02:47 PM
their both comedies, right?
then it's more than fair to compare the two.
128300, but the inherent basis of comparison between these two...
Posted by dro, Fri Dec-09-05 10:03 PM
is how well they deal with the same plot lines/ character traits, which at this point is kind of unfair.

no, it's not. the inherenet basis of comparison between the two is how funny they are.

128320, "how well they deal with" = how funny
Posted by dro, Fri Dec-09-05 10:50 PM
if you're arguing just on how funny they are, are you saying an office v. office argument has people thinking the same way as if it was an office v. arrested development argument? i don't think so.

the we just have to agree to disagree. people who think the US version is better are on some old "you can't compare the two" bullshit. while people who think the UK version is better are thinking, "yes you can. and if you compare them just on their comedic value, the BBC version is just funnier."

I think the big factor is that the BBC version is about 10 minutes longer than the american version and that can make a big difference as far as stories go.

But yeah, Arrested still trumps all. Oh, and nick or whoever, what was the name of that Canadian show that you all thought was so sharp that ytou upped clips of? I remember it being REALLY funny in the few minutes I watched.

Nothing compares to AD. It's not as sharp as the Gervais shows, but none of them pack as many great jokes in one show as they do. You laugh much more than the other shows because there's always something to laugh at. And if there isn't, it's because it's setting you up for a much bigger laugh. I don't see a eason this turned into an AD vs. The Office post, but the original Office just isn't as funny as Arrested.

that kool aid must be pretty good, i'm sure, but i'll pass....there is NOTHING about AD that makes it funnier or even remotely as interesting, as The Office...and i like AD..but when you realize it's just a bunch of quickie gags crammed together it doesn't work as well....what about AD makes it so sharp?? i understand you love the show, but let's not go overboard....hell, AD is a bunch of one note caricatures who are funny, but seriously redundant...the office had a brilliant cast of multi layered characters who were hillarious while playing on more interestiong social themes, thusly, making then more interesting...

The language barrier is a legitimate complaint. If you miss half the jokes because of the accent/language barrier than the material is half as funny as it would be to a native listener.

Nobody blames english speakers for not laughing at a joke told in Korean.

But the BBC show is better overall. The drama is much more effective in a closed-ended situation. The traditional sitcom stuff is better on the NBC show... in fact, I think the NBC show might even be funnier.

Granted I'm comparing one episode of the UK version vs every episode thus far of the US, so maybe it's not fair to say.

But the US Office is one of my favorite shows PERIOD, let alone compared to the UK version, which didn't even interest me enough to want to run out and rent it.

I think there will be people who will say that BBC version is better simply because it was first and/or its British. I also think that these people think that NBC must be inferior because its on American Network television and it is a remake of the British show.

I will give kudos for the british show and RG for its originality and creativity, but I think the american show is funnier and Steve Carrell is funnier than Ricky G. I say this knowing full well that the edge I give the American show is greatly influenced by the American Show playing to American sensibilities (not the mention the British accents and slang causes me to miss a lot of the british version). Yes I will admit that I like SC's character more because he is more likable and sympathetic, while I find RG's character more mean spirited than Steve Carrel's which is a change I am sure was a result of NBC execs wanting to make the character more palitble. I also think that SC has a few more comedic notes in his repetorie than RG has (at least in the performance of that character).
