..far too often you have protagonist of a story finds redemption through some form of religious revelation.

its easily one of the weakest plot devices.

instead, this film seems hell bent on showin' that not even god/religion can save this man. the only person that can save him is... him.

he had to want it. he had to stop denyin' that he was always in control. he needed to recognize the damage he was causin' to his life and the people around him.

i think they used the religious remarks to underline this (that and a bit of wry humor).

when you see the confrontation with his son, and the anger/frustration shown in that scene. yes, he's still tormented by his own devices, but he can't hide behind his heroics anymore.

by the time he's facin' the ntsb hearing, there's nothin' left but the facts. as much as he knew he wasn't responsible for that plane crash, he also knew katerina wasn't either.
