I thought there was a trilogy in this story (the relationship between Frank and Jesse; Jesse, his family, and the new gang; Ford dealing with the killing) and they tried to tell too much in one film. By not leaving anything out they IMO glossed over everything.

For this film, I would have shown the Ford's dealing with the aftermath (rather than explaining everything in voiceover) and gone back to Jesse James in flashbacks. Besides the character study, this would add a little mystery as to whether Ford's version that he portrayed on stage was actually how it happened.

And add Mary Louise Parker to the underutilized list.
