>Meshell Ndegeocello - Synonym

Admitted Meshell stan here but I really liked this overall. There were a few cuts that I'd maybe drop, but it's a nice take on a covers album, and there's a lot that really works here.

-thebigfunk

~ i could still snort you under the table ~

but have played it front to back 3 or 4 times.

i'm not even a covers person, at all, but this is fantastic IMO.

never knew i needed Ndegeocello and Cat Power to link for a Human League cover, but i guess i did need it.

Incredible album. Soooo well engineered to. The vocal separation is quite good.

The cover of the Human League song was unexpected (it was stuck in my head yesterday). Here We Come, I Got You Babe, are two other ones that I have repeated a lot.

Peace,

Haven’t heard from them in a looooong time

I’m going to say “The Healing” was the last I remember from them - 20 years ago! I was a fan back then.

Will check this out off the strength of those first 3 albums I used to listen to. Might inspire me to go relisten to it all, because it’s been a minute!

>The Avalanches - No Bad Memories

Listened on the car ride into work this morning
It’s up there with their best

@ ~0:40 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG2F0fOZKFI&list=RDoG2F0fOZKFI&start_radio=1

its probably why im a fan of their music (or of Since I Left You) in first place (their thing of giving you that little groove payoff then abruptly just randomly cut to something else)..but damn how i wanted that last coda-beatdrop at the end of 'Together' lol

my biggest beef with this?

i wanna fight them for "SUV Heaven" not being a full song length.

that sample was about to do something, and we get like 45 seconds? grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I enjoy the album a lot, and I appreciate that it's quite different from their previous records (esp. the last two, both of which I love), but...

I dislike how compressed these pieces are, time-wise. I think I get the general theme, and I think the shorter duration of these tracks fit that theme -- but there was a genius to the way they used to balance the micro and macro in any given moment of their work, and I think they lost that a bit here.

They've always played with shorter bursts of something -- a sample, a beat change -- that appear and then disappear almost as soon as you've taken note.

But in their previous albums, that "micro" element always felt balanced with something larger. You rarely felt like something was interrupted or cut short. You might want more of a fragment but it never felt like a fragment. And the longer runtime of individual cuts, or the way tracks ran into each other to *feel* like one longer track: that's such a big part of what they do best.

I "get" this album, and I really like it overall, but I won't play it as much as their past work -- I can already sense that. In a way, it feels less flexible than their past work. There's nothing wrong with that but it makes it... well, less flexible.

(esp. the last two, both
>of which I love), but...

kidding..but ill probably now give wildflowers/wwaly another listen soon (i think with wildflowers especially i heard the opening then probably didnt give rest of it a fair shake..)--but yea, i went for midday workout yesterday (roughly for same amount of time as this new album runtime) and it just hit (as one continuous cohesive listen..i can see what youre saying if something from it popped up while putting your whole collection on random-shuffle)

in fact i think you nailed.

i like the album, but the brevity of some of the tracks is jarring.

as you said, in their prior albums, even if something was brief, it didn't FEEL brief. it felt like it fit into the whole tapestry they were weaving. this one doesn't quite master that. not sure if that's intentional or not.

the new Avalanches of course

and my favorite contemporary jazz musician, sean mason dropped a new trio album - State of the Art - highly highly rec for jazz heads
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWtKy6261SceYc1MLkIpQUg

his first 2 albums are fantastic - particularly Breath of Fresh Air

this new one is a dif vibe because its just a trio album, but i love it too. Really interesting how he incorporated dance into the creation of the music as well - a bit about that here

and you can see it on display in the recording session vids

will definitely listen more.

and I'll check out his old stuff.

I was working so didn't hear as much as I'd like, but liked what I did hear quite a bit.

Unfortunately, pretty big let down compared to his others.

I definitely had my hopes up after learning he had label issues for his last album. I was thinking we will now get what he really wants to do but it's pretty much the same. I liked all the singles and I do like it overall but it came down for me in the middle. Picked back up towards the end though.

I think I just want more of Painted but he keeps doing enough to keep me listening.

I didn't listen to it a ton but I remember being impressed with a good amount of it, felt more original than Candydrip -- I like him most when he a) sings, and b) takes on production that doesn't quite sound like everything else.

(I do remember Algorithm being too long.)

I still think Table for Two might be the best thing he's done, but that's probably because I am mad that duets have gone by the wayside and because you clearly hear him as a singer.

Forgot about Candydrip. I rated Algorithm high but didn't come back to it much. Especially compared to Painted.

Did it affect the album at all? I loved Algorithm and still play it a lot. Thought that he was finding his lane with that album and expected him to really take it up a notch on this one. Felt like a step backwards.

I saw it on a clip from the Budden podcast but they always do the whole wink wink mhmmm if you know you know stuff so not clear at all. I think they were saying it was more lack of promotion but might have had some impact on the music.

It just doesn't sound like a Lucky Daye album.

It sounds like a bunch of songs that a lesser singer/artist would throw together and call an album. Like, overall it's not BAD music (though there are a couple actually bad songs on there to me), it's just not up to his level.

same with Aesop x Blockhead. Hopefully they deliver - their last collab (Garbology) was highly anticipated bc of the early Labor Days collabs, but i didn't really dig it that much

I wish hers was a little longer.
