3047454, Is "The Corner" Common's best flow ever? Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Oct-23-24 08:02 PM
He's a top 5 MC for me, and I can't think of a better way he spit than on this song. Correct me if I am wrong.

I wouldn't argue with you for having him in your Top 5, but I've never considered that song the height of his abilities. But I can see it's one of his more significant pieces because it signaled he was back in full after how many saw Electric Circus as a misstep. It was hard in a way many thought they would never get from him again.
I can't recall his catalog like I imagine you can, but It's Your World is a better display of his skills to me.
|
3047461, Hm. Would have to think about it, but it's up there. Posted by Brew, Thu Oct-24-24 09:26 AM
Like someone already said I think he was on a mission to prove he could still go toe to toe with any MC by returning to traditional boom bap. Mission accomplished.
Funnily enough, tho, I think once I give it some thought, I'll find that I think some of his best flows came from the album that this song was made to distance himself from, Electric Circus. lol.
But yea - he was blacking out on this track for sure.
|
3047469, I don't put that one up there. Posted by tariqhu, Thu Oct-24-24 04:09 PM
he's got so many though.
blue sky
black maybe
high expectations
1999 - street
I'm actually a huge fan of his songs where he rhymes slower.
|
3047490, Damn great list. Posted by Brew, Fri Oct-25-24 09:14 AM

I wouldn't have thought of Blue Sky cuz I'm mega meh about that song but now that you mention it, that's a good one. His flow is definitely on point. Which is all the more impressive because the beat is so off kilter.
>I'm actually a huge fan of his songs where he rhymes slower.
Likewise, for sure.

I don't really go back to this album all that much, even XXL took back the XXL rating they gave it BUT I do think it was the best song to go with as far as what to expect from the rest of it. He's definitely going for it on every verse of that song though

Like there's certainly albums that were way too hyped up at their time of release that actually weren't good. Be isn't one of them, at all. It may have been *slightly* overhyped (it's not his best album by a long shot), but it's really, really, really fucking good.

as much as it is not being some massive masterwork. Com is great on the verses but part of it feels like an apology for Electric Circus that wasn't necessary, and I'm not really a huge fan of that album. But I've never been a fan of how Kanye's beats sound sonically, so anything produced by him I'm almost instantly taken out of it because of that

3047481, This song and this album have really become overrated Posted by Anonymous, Thu Oct-24-24 10:15 PM
I didn’t even know people thought Be was his best album until recently on the internet. It’s odd how it’s kind of said as if it’s common knowledge that Be is his best album.
I know it got the XXL but even then, I assumed that was more of a lifetime achievement and “we love everything Ye does” rating which was fine.
I never thought that album was better than Like Water For Chocolate and I never thought The Corner was on par with The 6th Sense.
The beat is classic “light in the ass” Ye as far as the sound quality is concerned.
And yes, Common does kill that track but it never struck me as his best moment.
Resurrection Invocation Hungry High Expectations Time Travelin’ Dooinit The Sixth Sense Respiration 1-9-9-9
Common has a ton of joints I think he’s flowing as good if not better on.
|
3047482, Album was always one of his “top 4” Posted by DJR, Thu Oct-24-24 10:23 PM
Now, “top 5”.
And it might be #5 too.
And that’s not even a knock on the album. It’s really good and I love it, but Common put in WORK well before that one.
Random thoughts now, but I imagine “Be” is to Common fans as “The Fix” is to Scarface fans.
|
3047493, I think this is right. Posted by Brew, Fri Oct-25-24 09:19 AM

^^ that's a great analogy. Both are objectively great albums, but nowhere near either artists' best.
The holy trinity for Common was and always will be Resurrection, One Day, and LWFC. To your point Be was always 4th (tho it's so good that I wouldn't argue *that hard* if someone placed it in their top 3) and now, it might even be 5th. I can't really argue that.
|
3047500, ehh I dont know man Posted by Stadiq, Fri Oct-25-24 05:13 PM
>The holy trinity for Common was and always will be >Resurrection, One Day, and LWFC.
As a huge Com fan myself, not sure how well One Day holds up. It has brilliant moments/runs and a certain charm to the chaos of course.
But I haven't played a lot of those songs in over a decade because theres no reason to go back.
I'd go LWFC, Resurrection, BE...then One Day.
Auditorium is still new, but that's probably next and may end up 4th.
I think a certain audience overrates BE relatively...but I also think old head Common fans downplay the importance of that album.
Not invalidating your opinion (or anyones), just sharing mine.
As an album? Be is stronger than One Day to me, though its close.
Take off the pointless Testify and put Dilla's Be and/or Home and its a wrap.
|
3047515, Yea I can't argue too hard one way or the other. Posted by Brew, Mon Oct-28-24 09:37 AM
I think Be is better in terms of conciseness and front to back replay value.
But I think Comm's bars, concepts, and just overall temperament (for lack of a better term) on One Day all elevate it, for me. He was just so cool, confident, and (pun intended) hungry on that album. I loved the liner notes and the story it told. I loved the album cover w/his mama as a kid. I love how the liner notes include pics of all the guest artists as kids.
And, for all the issues people often bring up about the pacing and sequencing of that album, No ID laced that shit with some absolute banger classics.
Like you said, it's close. So you won't get much of an argument from me if you put Be above One Day. I just think lyrically, Comm was on another level on the Res, One Day, LWFC run. He was spitting on Be, too, for sure, but, as a minor gripe/example of why I think the Holy Trinity I mentioned it superior to Be, it's a short album and he repeated a bar on two consecutive songs lol.
Real People: "They say the dope game is sour Now they doin' homework that's when they follow you for hours"
They Say: "They say 'Dope is sour, so it's homework and hood crimes'"
Not a huge deal but just one of those things that's always stood out to me. I still love both songs and love that album.
Anyway, to be very clear, I was just listing my top 4 Comm albums and how I personally rank them (as you mentioned). But you can list those top 4 (and now, with Auditorium, top 5 IMO) albums in any order and I'm there's really gonna be no significant argument from me. They're all near perfect, and great for their own reasons.
|
3047505, yeah Auditorium dropped Be from 4th to 5th for me Posted by Lach, Sat Oct-26-24 07:02 AM
1. LWFC 2. One Day 3. Auditorium 4. Resurrection 5. Be
LWFC is my wife's fav too. I guess it has something to do with us running all these errands getting ready for our first child when it dropped. We'd have that CD on repeat every where we went till Train of Thought dropped later that year.

3047506, I’m still figuring it out where it will fall Posted by DJR, Sat Oct-26-24 09:47 AM
Right now, it’s the Common album I’m playing every time. In a few years, we’ll have to see.
One thing for me now, while I love going back to albums like Resurrection, Illmatic, etc. at times - I also have to be in a certain mood. There’s nostalgia and also obvious appreciation for the high level rhyming and beats - but I’m not always in the mood to listen to 20 year olds. Lot of times these days I just need the grown man rapping. Like “Fortunate” - most of the time these days, that’s the type of song I’d want to hear more than any other.
|
3047513, yeah I feel you on the grown man rap Posted by Lach, Mon Oct-28-24 06:28 AM
I ran into Maseo of all people here in Georgia the other day just out grocery shopping and was saying the same thing. Was telling him how big De La's influence has been in my life and how I just can't get with these new dudes. I've come to the conclusion that outside of maybe a handful of cats, I can't listen to anyone under 40.

On a somewhat related note, I gained a new appreciation for 3 Feet High & DLSID after my daughter was born. Always loved those albums but at the same time I felt like they were "before my time" or of another era. They remain so, but the positive vibes and themes on both those albums were perfect. She dances her stupid little butt off when those beats start playing and I can rap along to my favorite group of all time. It's a perfect scenario.
Anyway same deal re: the "new dudes." Old man yelling at cloud etc. but the rhythms and vibes and even the content just doesn't feel, at all, the same.

3047516, With you on this 100%. Posted by Brew, Mon Oct-28-24 09:39 AM

I think this is partially why I love One Day It'll All Make Sense as much as I do. For all its faults (as beautiful a song as it is, Retrospect for Life has a problematic premise), I have a soft spot for the wisdom and grown man feel of the production and (most of) the lyrics.
But Auditorium takes that to a whole new level. I really haven't stopped listening to it since it came out.

3047525, IMO The Fix is Face’s best album from top to bottom. Posted by Anonymous, Mon Oct-28-24 10:52 PM
>Random thoughts now, but I imagine “Be” is to Common fans >as “The Fix” is to Scarface fans.
I get why that’s not a popular opinion and I get that the album is more “East coast” sounding than his other classics but there just nothing that isn’t GREAT on The Fix.
All his other albums have moments I could do without.
I feel his songwriting from song to song is better.
I also feel featuring both Nas and Jay at the height of their beef and placing them on songs where they both individually would shine brightest was a huge flex.
I don’t know man, there’s just something special about The Fix for me.

for somebody that's not familiar with him, it works everytime for me. also I think this is the album where his songwriting and lyricism is on the same level for the entirety of the album. I mean I'm taking I Seen A Man Die over Someday any day of the week, but the way he was weaving in and out of them beats was a thing of beauty. for me It Ain't Shit pt. II was the beginning

But I think most Face fans would go with The Diary as his best, and most Common fans go with LWFC or Resurrection.
The Fix was a later career album that was really good, did really well, maybe more accessible to a wider audience (Kanye beats, and Nas and Jay features), I just feel like it holds a similar place in his career as Be does to Common’s.

Agreed on all points.
Be is great, but I think it's only talked about like it's his objective best by people who consider Ye the GOAT, and these days, on-line, that's a lot of people.

3047496, I was disappointed hearing the Corner Posted by javi222, Fri Oct-25-24 01:22 PM

>RE: I was disappointed hearing the Corner >When Be dropped, Electric Circus had grown on me…So all I >heard was Common watering down his lyrics and trying to be >mainstream > >Though I aint mad at it… Be brought him a lot of success
I loved EC right from the beginning, despite it's glaring shortcomings. So while I thought The Corner was dope, I was definitely a little disappointed and let down that he was "going backwards" (even tho it certainly didn't sound like anything he'd done before, it was just a return to "boomp bap" as it were) as opposed to continuing to push the envelope like that whole collective had been doing for 5 or 6+ years to that point. Part of that disappointment was probably due to the fact that I was 19 or 20 at the time, so in my own life I was exploring and discovering new things. So on some level I probably subconsciously wanted my favorite artists to continue doing the same because that's what I gravitated toward them for.
I loved Be anyway but always hated how he spent so much time dismissing EC. Glad he's walked that back a bit as time has gone on. That album was ahead of its time.
To your point about the success, I can understand why he went that route looking back. He was at a career crossroads, needed more than critical acclaim to survive in the industry. I think I was just hoping he was something that it turned out he wasn't. Which, to be clear, is perfectly fine, he's been an amazing artist and had a great career as he is.

Love Is…that beat is just beautiful.

I like Finding Forever. I just think it's too closely tethered to Be for me. I could also do without the "Hollywood Comm" stuff. Dreamer/Believer suffered from the same problem. I think TD/TB is a better album than Finding Forever but they both suffer from too many bars about his newfound fame. I don't need to hear Comm rapping about being boys with Johnny Depp and shit. Haha.
But FF def has some great moments, I agree. I'm curious which songs you think are among "the best work he's ever done" ? I don't think I ever thought any songs from that album matched his best work. But I'm open to the discussion. "Start the Show" stands out.

You already said the first one: Start the Show The People Southside The Game Black Maybe So Far To Go Misunderstood Forever Begins
Those all sound like timeless Common songs that would stack up against any he's done.

3047527, I think most responders are misunderstanding this post. Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Oct-29-24 04:22 AM
You might be right. I think his flow on on "I Am Music" is underrated for obvious reasons. "The People" was good too, likely owing to Kanye's influence again. Interestingly, the whole "Can I Borrow A Dollar" album had varying flows on it, as I think he focused more on his flow at that time. "Take It EZ", "Breaker 1/9", "Just In The Nick of Rhyme" etc found him being animated and catchy with his flows as was more standard for that period in rap. "Resurrection" is just some great run-on sentence flowing lol. Gotta put that up there. I think most comments are naming his best lyrical performances, which is different from flow. Surely the ideal is when the two meet, but they're different.

Yea, it was something.
Totally unrelated aside that I'm thinking about in the current moment for obvious reasons: the woman who taught that class had a massive impact on me. I wish I could find out where she is now to thank her. I had her for that TV class, as well as an English class my freshman year. I wouldn't have known to describe her this way at the time but, in hindsight, she was big time progressive. She taught me an awful lot about how to be skeptical of advertising (particularly political advertising) in terms of understanding that most quotes utilized in advertising (and oftentimes, in journalism) are taken out of context to change their meaning and fit a desired narrative.
She also put me on to how racist even TV is. She pointed out to our TV class how "Friends," a show centered in *New York City*, had literally zero Black people in it. This shit (clearly) stuck with me to this day, and will forever.
What a cool teacher. I really need to find her. lol.

3047623, ^^^^^Yeah I was trying to focus on Flow. It's not even my favorite Common Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Nov-14-24 03:10 PM
Song. And it's not the greatest lyrical content. Or complex rhyme scheme.
But the flow of it.
Hungry and Invocation are straight hard spitting
I Used to Love HER is clever and invented the extended metaphor (right?)
The Light - a great love song with a dope conceit
1-9-9-9 he is spittin very Malcolm X-ly (a good thing).
But as far as flow, the only other one on the Corner's level to me is resurrection.
I wanted to explain it better so I am mad yall got me googing "WHat is flow in hip-hop" but this definition works:
In rap music, flow is the rhythm and rhyme of a rapper's lyrics, and how they interact with each other. It's one of the most important ways that rappers and audiences differentiate between different styles of rapping.
Here are some things to know about flow in rap music:
Complexity
The complexity of flow has increased over time, from the "old-school" style of the early to mid-1980s to the "new-school" style that began to evolve in the mid-1990s. New-school flow can include multiple rhymes in the same rhyme complex, internal rhymes, offbeat rhymes, and more.
Musical quality
If you imagine your voice as another instrument, flow gives your voice its musical quality. Transitioning
Some rappers can smoothly transition between bars while using clever wordplay. Categories
Krims identified three categories of flow: sung, percussion-effusive, and speech-effusive.

3047672, Respectfully, that's what makes Hungry so strong Posted by Beamer6178, Fri Nov-22-24 11:34 AM
he rides that beat so goddamn perfectly
"skip ladies this is rip a motherfucka night/oracle air outs, niggas can't even run for cover right"
"The Corner" sounds like a more deliberate effort on his part to match the beat, like he's restraining himself to match it. "Hungry" he's allowed to run free.

3047678, Somehow I think Hungry is more difficult to flow to as well ? Posted by Brew, Fri Nov-22-24 12:58 PM
It's an amazing, but sort of clunky beat in some ways. I dunno maybe I'm overthinking it, but the pace and rhythm of The Corner seems more traditional, whereas Hungry has a weird pocket, IMO.
And with that in mind I think I agree that his flow on Hungry is def worthy of mention in this discussion. But then again, I'm probably biased cuz Hungry has long been my "an alien asks about what an MC is, what song do you give them" song lol.

3047714, This is also why I mentioned "I Am Music" Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sun Nov-24-24 07:50 AM
That's a very difficult beat to rap over because of the timing and energy. He manages to keep timing and maintain the bounce. He's pretty brilliant on the 2nd verse with timing. Underrated performance in his catalog imo.

3047545, Dying for this to get on streaming. Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-30-24 01:47 PM
He did this version @ the Common/Pete Rock show in Boston. I know every word (my old AIM profile always had "On the rocks of reality, dreams get splashed" in it) and he noticed me and pointed me out (he was doing that to various people throughout the show and has always done that, I ain't special lol). I like how he's appreciative of folks knowing his old stuff. He also pointed me out when I was rapping along to I Used to Love HER.

3047622, read this post Posted by maro, Wed Nov-13-24 09:31 PM
Went back to the catalog.....
Kinda got stuck on The 6th Sense. Something about this song (props to premier) just feels quintessential common. Yeah, we all know HER and resurrection, and the Light .... but I'd put this on top.

3047626, RE: TSS is the heart and soul of that album Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Nov-14-24 08:12 PM

in my opinion it's THE song on the album that if you take it off, the album is missing something integral.

3047628, That’s why I’m legit confused when people claim The Corners as his best song Posted by Anonymous, Thu Nov-14-24 10:22 PM
I know this post is talking about flow specifically but I’ve heard people claim that is Com’s best song and I don’t really know how to take it other than “oh you one of them Kanye Common fans”
The 6th Sense is so much more of a classic track imo.

3047655, Some people understand things better than you do. Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Nov-20-24 06:03 PM
Flow is apparently one of them. See, this superiority complex you carry into every conversation can easily work both ways.

A definitively angular performance and switches up cadence seamlessly throughout his guest verse.
