3042695, Larry June/Alchemist - “The Great Escape” deserves its own thread

I’ve had a chance to sit with it for a month now, and I absolutely love this album.

I’d heard Larry June here and there - every now and then one of his songs would pop up on Spotify. But I wasn’t really up on him….and now I’m a big fan.

Vocally reminds me of Boldy a bit, vibe reminds me of Curren$y a bit…..but he’s rapping about 401Ks and doing burpees and consuming sea moss and shit. I absolutely love it!

And Alchemist’s beats on here fit him perfectly. Props to Alchemist - I listened to the album because he produced it, and now I’m a Larry June fan and will check for all his work.
3042698, Exactly my experience!

I've been wondering what to check out next by LJ. Are there any free releases?

Didn’t know he had projects with Cookin Soul! So good.
3043003, I’ve been on “Out the Trunk” lately

Came out in 2019.

“Into the Late Night” (2021) is another one that caught me.

Still playing the new album, while exploring the older stuff. I’m glad there’s so much of it, I like all of his shit.
3042717, My only complaint - that Action Bronson verse

Guy watched some HBO and spit a terrible verse about it, SMH.

Really enjoying the album though, lots of replay value IMO. Probably my favorite Alchemist produced album since Alfredo with Gibbs.
3042733, Pretty sure it'll stay in my top 10 for 2023

Alchemist can't miss, I've loved all of these albums/EP's he's done the past couple of years, just really knows how to craft an enjoyable listen front to back.

With Larry I agree with the Curren$y comparison, cool vibe, isn't an amazing rapper but definitely does nothing to mess things up.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

3042734, for me, it’s battling Skyzoo for number 1
Posted by DJR, Fri May-05-23 02:52 PM
They’re such different albums and I like them for different reasons, so it’s hard to pick one over the other. But those are the albums that have moved me the most so far. Thought is 3rd.
3042736, It's really good but I think it misses out on best albums for the year
Posted by mista k5, Fri May-05-23 03:46 PM
just barely.

These are my top albums of the year so far. Still going through some from today.

Skyzoo & The Other Guys - The Mind of a Saint
El Michels Affair & Black Thought - Glorious Game
Klassy - Good Seeds
Jidenna - Me, You & God
Planet Giza - Ready When You Are
KAMAUU - LACUNA & The House of Mirrors
Larry June & The Alchemist - The Great Escape

I think all of those could be called rap. Daniel Caesar - NEVER ENOUGH is up there too but I'm thinking we are keeping it to rap albums for this convo.

I have the Larry album pretty high up but I am thinking it will keep moving down and end up in the honorable mentions category.
3042744, Trying to listen not too much to it
Posted by PuertoNico, Sat May-06-23 04:04 AM
but that's a really hard act to follow... I am waiting for the vinyl the drop which won't be before july and also comes at a heavy price :(
3042749, I'm too old (37) for this shit
Posted by guru0509, Sat May-06-23 08:22 PM
Lol I dont get the appeal at all
3042756, you can do it!

37 as well and totally into Larry June now. Isn't Uncle Al much older than us? ;-)
3042804, all he does it rap about green juice, money cars and women
Posted by tomjohn29, Fri May-12-23 01:40 PM
sounds pretty age appropriate to me lol
3042805, Right.

3042816, It’s some chill out music with fun and positive content IMO
Posted by DJR, Sun May-14-23 04:21 PM
I like the production more and more, as time goes on. Alchemist put his foot in this. This is perfect spring/summer driving music IMO.
3042827, lol @ acting like Larry June is some young, dumb nigga shit
Posted by daskap, Mon May-15-23 05:24 PM
the shit he's rapping about is very appropriate for that age and I'm 38
3042830, It’s not the subject matter , it’s the slow slurry delivery and mumbling

>the shit he's rapping about is very appropriate for that age

Erk uses his gov't name as his stage name now, Kevin Allen. He's in Grand Nationxl with Passwurdz and some other cats from The Bay.
