3042109, Which De La Soul album did you listen to first?
Posted by doitall76, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
This is not "Which is your favorite album" or ranking the albums, but rather now that you are presented all 6 albums on streaming to listen to, which one did you click on first?

This is the question that I have.

A couple songs sound slightly different on Buhloone, but I don't know if anything really changed or if it is the Spatial Audio mix that makes it sound different.

En Focus is the one that jumps out. Of the bat, "Bio-Feed-Back" is a slightly different pitch and presentation (to my ears). Let me know what you guys think.

Same. There are a few Buhloone Mindstate samples that sound different, but I can't tell if it's because they were remixed/remastered, or recreated.
* The Mike G sample on "Patti Dooke"
* "It might blow up, but it won't go pop" on "Patti Dooke"
* "Ain't...no...half...steppin'" on "Ego Trippin'" sounds pitched up

The Craig Mack intro on "The Bizness" is gone.

the eddie murphy sample on magic number is gone... the whole cool breeze scratch skit is gone. a couple of random soul singer sample drop-ins on a few songs are gone but they did not add anything to the tracks. I notice otis redding now has a credit on eye know (for his whistling I guess).

that was what I notice on 3 feet high and rising....

cant believe albums used to be this long...

3042114, Glad the samples for "Change in speak" and "Potholes in my lawn"

...are the same as before.

yep
3042116, Buhloone, De La is Dead then 3 Feet High...
Posted by Marbles, Fri Mar-03-23 01:43 PM

Buhloone Mindstate - I think I missed this one the most.
De La Soul is Dead - Oddly enough, this is probably the De La album I'm least familiar with.
3 Feet High & Rising - I'm in the middle of this one right now. The nostalgia factor is high. What a blast from the past.

Maybe sometime in the near future, I'll roll though them all in chronological order, top to bottom.
3042117, Misunderstood so I misvoted.
Posted by Brew, Fri Mar-03-23 01:50 PM
I started with DLSID.

But voted for Stakes cuz that was the first of their albums I *ever* heard.

My bad.
3042123, heading to "is dead" first this weekend
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Mar-03-23 02:57 PM
but planning a whole tour of the catalog

All but my copy of 3 ft are in CDs packed away, not even ripped to mp3s, so haven't listened to the bulk of the catalog in at least 5 or 6 years

And I've been specifically wanting to revisit "Dead" -- it's a favorite and has been on my mind!

3042125, Slightly off topic - what's the story behind the First Serve album?
Posted by cal.25, Fri Mar-03-23 03:06 PM
That album wasn't on my radar at all, my first knowledge of it is seeing it listed on Spotify this week
3042128, That one has been available
Posted by mista k5, Fri Mar-03-23 04:04 PM
It's just Dave and Pos with some producers. Doesn't really have a De La vibe but still worth checking out. I don't consider it a De La album since it's not all three of them.
3042254, stupid question...how is that different
Posted by Stadiq, Wed Mar-15-23 01:21 PM

than say AN?

What does Maseo do on the albums these days?

No shade intended, just not a superfan like that so I don't know.
3042255, It's a fair question
Posted by mista k5, Wed Mar-15-23 01:37 PM
When you hear them talk it seems like they all really do play off each other and they all have input on production. Maybe not on every track but it does seem like it's a collaborative effort.

In a practical sense I don't know.

I don't know why they decided to make this album as Plug 1 and Plug 2 instead of De La Soul. Why not include Maseo? I have also wondered how much Maseo does in creating music. I don't think he's just there like Eric B was but he's also not Q-Tip or Pete Rock handling most the production.

When you listen to First Serve it's definitely a concept album. They're playing characters. Guess that could be done as a De La Soul album but yeah I definitely couldn't answer this.
3042260, RE: It's a fair question
Posted by doitall76, Thu Mar-16-23 08:09 AM
I am actually a fan of the First Serve album. I think it is dope and well executed. There is still the goofy elements present on the skits and some of the lyrics. The production is entirely handled by Chokolate and Khalid (a French duo), so the album sounds consistent throughout. I could put it on today and listen all the way through.

They definitely didn't call it a De La album, because of the lack of Maseo involvement.

I would assume that Maseo has great input on the songs and albums from a DJ perspective.

Peace

3042261, I don't hate it
Posted by mista k5, Thu Mar-16-23 09:35 AM
When I listened last week it felt closer to a De La album than I remember but it's still different than their other albums. I know I played it a lot when it came out.
3042266, I see, thanks
Posted by Stadiq, Thu Mar-16-23 02:13 PM

I checked First Serve when it first dropped and I remember not being crazy about it....but confused why it wasn't just a De La record
3042130, they are best forgotten... only blemish on their catalogue

3042126, I’ve had them all on my phone forever….
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-03-23 03:34 PM
so I haven’t listened yet on streaming because I’ve never stopped listening.

But I’ve been patiently waiting for a long time for a beautiful, sunny morning where I can use “Sunshine” in my IG Story.

I am not trying to call any one person out, but I have seen this a few times. People mention that they have the albums on their phone or on a personal server. I do too. I have ripped all of my physical copies, and have other De La stuff that has come out over the years on my Subsonic server and never stopped listening to the albums. I think that it is safe to say that if you are on Okayplayer's boards, that it is likely that you never went without listening to them ever.

But, I would simply ask that, even if you have the originals on your phone, stream them on the whatever platform you use so De La can start making the money that we wish they had made this whole time that they weren't able to make money off streams that all of their peers did. There are a couple songs that might have a couple different sounds, but do it for De La.

Peace

That’s how I always do it these days - even when it’s new music that I buy to support, I always play it in Spotify so they get the streams.
3042195, ^ all of this.
Posted by Brew, Tue Mar-07-23 12:25 PM
I've been listening to them consistently but the ease of access now is just great. And obviously as you mentioned, it's important they get the streams.

I was happy to see that Eye Know and Magic Number both were already well over 7 figures in views by the time the whole catalogue was released. So hopefully that momentum continues.
3042131, not talked about too much but My Writes is fire
Posted by makaveli, Fri Mar-03-23 04:36 PM
My first album today was Buhloone Mindstate. Been bumping De La all day.
3042133, I'm more into their chill songs

but yeah My Writes is fire.
3042147, Me too

I prefe their chill songs but this one goes.
3042169, Love that song. First half of that album is money.
Posted by Brew, Mon Mar-06-23 11:36 AM
My Writes is dope as hell tho you're right, always loved that song too. Xzibit comes hard on it.
3042134, Also, wondering when I’ll be able to play “Trying People”
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-03-23 05:57 PM
because right now that one is just too much for me.
3042155, I was crying when I first listened to it right after he passed
Posted by makaveli, Sat Mar-04-23 06:11 PM
What a song.
3042170, Was tearing up last nite when I played it, too. Whew.
Posted by Brew, Mon Mar-06-23 11:36 AM
3042148, Never been a huge fan of 3 Ft, but
Posted by bills, Sat Mar-04-23 09:19 AM
I've been going thru Frank Zappa's catalogue...and We're Only In It for the Money feels A LOT like 3 Feet High & Rising to me. So since the announcement broke, I've been waiting to listen to both back to back and see if 3 Ft starts to "click" for me.
(Don't get me wrong, LOVE De La...Buhloone Mindstate is one of my fav albums ever, and ...Is Dead, Stakes, and Grind Date get a lot of burn from me as well.)
3042161, RE: Which De La Soul album did you listen to first?

Bionix, because it is the only one I didn’t own on CD and have heard it the least. The track with the Cee Lo hook is smooth.
3042163, Who was Pos talking about when he said
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Sun Mar-05-23 03:51 PM
"Them n!gg@s screamin' fam 'til they rank measure equal
Then bolt, without leavin' a note, and that was all she wrote"

I never played the AOI joints much but always wondered who that was directed toward.
3042167, 3 Feet was my first front-to-back listen
Posted by Oak27, Mon Mar-06-23 10:08 AM
The first thing I did Friday morning was start building my De La playlist to run through on a 2.5 hour drive so I didn't get around to listening to any albums all the way through until yesterday. I put on 3 Feet and ran it all the way on a walk yesterday afternoon.
3042168, I kinda wish they re-released one album a week.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Mar-06-23 11:01 AM
Would have forced everyone to focus on one album a week.

I went thru sequentially (up thru Grind Date) Friday into last nite as time allowed. But I think this approach would've been beneficial.

Maybe every 2-3 days tho, instead of every week ? I dunno.
3042180, Damn, Stakes Is High wasn't on streaming either?
Posted by High Society, Mon Mar-06-23 05:39 PM
I hadn't realized that.
3042193, Me neither. It took a while to realize that I had been listening to
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Mar-07-23 12:13 PM
unofficial ripped playlist on youtube. They eventually removed those in the last year or so.

3042264, I have a question.
Posted by Brew, Thu Mar-16-23 10:41 AM
I read that "Deaf 2 U," a production duo who did some beats on one or both of the AOI albums, includes Pos' younger brother. Is that the same brother he was referring to on "My Brother is a Basehead" ?

I'm sure I could find it online somewhere but I'm busy and am hoping someone here knows off top.
