One of the greatest wordsmiths in poetry, literature or music, period. Plug Two.

Details are scarce, but Trugoy has been struggling with his health over the past few years. In 2018, Trugoy opened up about his battle with congestive heart failure in an Instagram video and admitted he was struggling being sidelined.

“I’m ready just to get back to the stage,” he said at the time. “I miss that. I love traveling. I love being around my guys and I want that back.”

In 2020, he again sparked concern when he was briefly hospitalized. He appeared to be in good spirits, however, and was able to have an Instagram Live conversation with his De La Soul brethren, Posdnous and Maseo.

It was expected to be a giant year for De La Soul. The talented trio has been fighting to get their first six albums on streaming services after a years of stalled negotiations with Tommy Boy Records, their former label. But last year, Reservoir wound up acquiring the Tommy Boy catalog and wanted to help rectify the situation.

After more than three decades, their groundbreaking debut 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High and Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump and AOI: Bionix will finally be available on all DSPs.

In an interview with Rock The Bells last month, Posdnuos spoke on their hard-won victory, saying, “When we got together with the owners of Tommy Boy, every now and then, we’d make a few strides, then maybe all of us within the group wouldn’t trust in what was going on. Communications would be shut down for a few months. To get to the point where Reservoir has taken over the Tommy Boy catalog, they immediately reached out and they were like, ‘Look man, we have control of this. Let’s work it out.’ It was a whole different feeling, a better energy.

“Let’s be honest. They didn’t have to do it. It was just great to know they did take the time to work this out with us, but it’s been a journey. Once it was worked out, we still had to get all the business, all the affairs handled and now here we are.”

But now, it all feels bittersweet without all three members able to celebrate the momentous occasion. AllHipHop sends our heartfelt condolences to all of Trugoy’s loved ones.
3041889, Noooooooo, that’s so awful.

Shedding tears over here.

I can't believe that at the end of this very long journey to get their music out, he won't be there to see it hit differently for a whole new generation. March 3rd was supposed to be pure celebration, but now it is going to hit very differently. It will still be a celebration, but it will be bittersweet.

Peace

A damn shame. They spent all that time getting jerked by their label.

All that time working to get their music on streaming to make some money.

And then passing away once they got that situated and were preparing to go live in less than a month.

These labels and services should be a fucking ashamed of themselves.

3041912, Just talked about this last night...
Posted by doitall76, Sun Feb-12-23 11:20 PM
I was talking to my wife last night and I said to her that there are a bunch of 25th and 30th anniversary edition remastered albums that are going to be released, and they're going to wait to drop those items on the exact date of the 25th or 30th anniversary, etc. Understand this is done for better promotion, but there are going to be some true fans that miss out on hearing updated versions, and seeing the re-release.

Unfortunately, it is is too close to that scenario.

Peace,

Stunned and saddened by this. Literally played Eye Know on streaming an hour before this news broke.

For me, Dave was the absolute stand out on their last LP as I know I said as much in some older posts on OKP.... Just listened back to Whoodini.... brought a tear to my eye.... Let alone the countless timeless lyrics across their catalog. I saw them in 95 touring with Tribe. I consider myself lucky to have been a fan from the jump.

RIP

3041932, Was planning to say the same.

>For me, Dave was the absolute stand out on their last LP

Dave was great his whole career but I'm a Pos stan and Anonymous Nobody was the first time I thought Dave *clearly* bested Pos on a DLS album. What a performance. Glad he ended his career on that high a note.

This fucking sucks so fucking bad.

Yes, I agree with this. I was extremely impressed by Dave’s performance on the last LP. I think pos was much more understated that usual, but it was apparent how on for Dave was!
3041986, I need to revisit the last album

Rest in Peace, Plug 2.

Never knew him, but he and his music have been a part of my life, brain, consciousness, and soul for the past 35 years. That's almost 3x the lifespan of most of my students.

IMO, Trugoy put the Soul in De La Soul.
3041943, RIP to a true innovator who created a lane for many in hip hop

There are so many groups and acts that owe a debt to De la Soul for being the first of a brand of music that meant so much to fans of the group and music as a whole. And Dave's style was unique and was a perfect compliment to Pos's.

On a personal note, I hope and pray that Dave's family and close friends have support as they grieve his loss. They lost a father, husband, and relative who shined positivity and humor within the confines of life.

For me, De la was the artsy, smart, witty, goofy, but sharp group of cousins I always wanted. Along with Tribe, they were some of the first "images of me" that I recognized in hip-hop. And I'm glad I had a chance to see the evolution of their music and their lives firsthand.

RIP Plug Two

They did a brief tribute to Dave and performed an abbreviated version of Buddy. Solemn, but not overbearing. I was expecting more but their show is more upbeat and high energy so it made sense.
