..and miles to go before i sleep...
3040226, Holy smokes.
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Nov-01-22 08:40 AM
I was under the assumption the five albums presented were five old albums.

Five NEW albums released all at once. That is beyond wild to me.

If memory serves me correct, both Inflo and Cleo Sol are of Jamaican decent. Releasing five albums like this reminds me of that Hey Mon sketch from In Living Color that deals with the crazy work ethic Jamaicans stereotypically have.
3040227, And they just had a baby
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Nov-01-22 08:43 AM
Like... how is this even possible with an infant?
3040228, And they recorded Cleo Sol's Mother album
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Nov-01-22 08:47 AM
right around she gave birth to their child.

In addition, I believe Inflo might have done work on the recent Adele's album while Cleo Sol was pregnant, but I could be wrong about that timing.

Pretty goddamn wild.
3040235, Don't forget SIMBI
Posted by Nabs, Tue Nov-01-22 02:38 PM
Cleo was on damn near every song along with Inflo producing.
3040231, Yeah I assumed it was just the old albums
Posted by mista k5, Tue Nov-01-22 12:17 PM
I definitely didn't expect 5 new albums. I would have been happy to just get the old albums. Excited to check these out.

3040236, I felt burnt when X turned out to be 1 song. All is now forgiven
Posted by sersey, Tue Nov-01-22 03:07 PM
It will take a while to digest all this music. Besides their prolificness (made up word?) what has me mind blown is how proficient Inflo is in production across genres.

I mean, You have a song like “Money” that is undeniable punk rock with a Dancehall artist (Chronix) chatting over some serious guitar shredding. And it fucking works! Has this ever been done?!?

Change gears to anything on AIIR, which is in the vein of Classical music. And it also sounds like it was made by a seasoned classical composer.

Switch gears again to “God in Disguise”. A Casio keyboard, video game-sounding track that sounds more at home on a Thundercat album. Again
. Inflo nails it.

Then check out “My Light” which has a samba backdrop. Like How Sway??

How is this dude so proficient in all these musical styles? Sault is just fucking with us at this point. I’m fully expecting a dope ass country album from them down the road. Wouldn’t surprise me at ALL.
3040255, RE: I felt burnt when X turned out to be 1 song. All is now forgiven
Posted by spidey, Wed Nov-02-22 01:09 PM
All well said, they are killing it. Just incredible musicianship...no thanks on the country LP though...hahahaaaa...

Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Tue Nov-01-22 09:37 PM
I've ran it twice.

Side A is good, but everything from Fight For Love to the end is... phew...man.
Definitely some of the best work Sault has done! Folks who love a good groove record will dig this.

My favorites are Fight For Love and The Circle.

I was (eh...still am actually) skeptical that they released this much music all at once, (another post for another day)
But man, 11 by itself is a worth sending these folks some money. You want my opinion, start with 11.

My only gripe, "Higher", while being solid, sounds like a demo.
3040249, 11 is great
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-02-22 09:04 AM
I really liked it. About as good as anything else they've done.
3040264, I'm starting here
Posted by Options, Thu Nov-03-22 05:40 AM
I think absorbing all this music in one go would be almost disrespectful to the work, so I'ma take it real slow and give each joint space/time to sink in.

but I agree with you that 11 is one of their best, which is obviously saying a lot. after only one listen, it feels a bit unbalanced between the two halves, but overall? *whew* maybe it was my state of mind at the time, but Glory literally made me tear up.

I can't wait to get my hands on a (theoretical) physical version of this. bring it on. please.

Still got 3 albums to listen to. Think I’m going to stick with this one for awhile though. I finish it and want to play it all again.

3040243, Stupid question but is there a particular order
Posted by las raises, Tue Nov-01-22 05:46 PM
These should be listened to? I listed to 11 first
3040244, I was wondering the same
Posted by mista k5, Tue Nov-01-22 05:54 PM
I don't really know.

I started with 11 then AIIR, Earth, Today & Tomorrow and God at the end. Worked out to be numerical/alphabetical but I really started with 11 because the last release was 10. After that I went with least amount of tracks.

For enjoyment I would probably swap Earth and Today & Tomorrow.

3040253, If these will get pressed on vinyl and/or CD in the future
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Nov-02-22 12:25 PM
that might answer your question, unless they actually plan to sell all five albums in physical format simultaneously, which would be quite the undertaking.
3040327, I need some liner notes for those five albums that dropped.
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Nov-04-22 03:30 PM
In particular, I want to know the non-Sault folks that were involved with these projects.

I've listened to two of the five albums so far (Earth & Today and Tomorrow) as I plan to slowly take in the music rather than force myself to listen to them all at once.
3040378, im pretty sure Chronixx has been the newest voice on these projects

they're kinda forcing my hand in taking my time listening — I gotta hear it before committing to physical...

*definitely* in for 11, tho.

gonna hold out for other retailers to try and save some scratch on shipping.
3040432, I caved
Posted by Options, Fri Nov-11-22 07:28 PM
and made an uncharacteristic impulse buy; snagged everything but AIIR after taking a whistle-stop tour thru the albums I haven't fully listened to yet. crunched some numbers and realized bandcamp was cheaper than copping 'em locally and probably equivalent to any other place that would ship to where I am.

I hope I like 'em all, haha ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
3040422, It's not cheap to press up five vinyl albums all at once
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Nov-11-22 11:07 AM
especially for an indie group. Sault has been doing good for themselves it seems. Congrats to them.

I'll do what I've done in the past and look for these to drop domestically (Mr. Bongo, Turntable Lab, Rough Trade) so I can save on shipping costs.
3040427, I'll probably get 3 of the 5.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Nov-11-22 12:36 PM
I knew this was going to happen.
I can't afford all of them at once.

I will say this, and I'm thinking of explaining further in a later post,
but I may be done on the instant vinyl buys with Sault.
When there's a Cleo Sol follow up to Mother? Instant cop.
The collective is now on a wait and see basis.
3040455, RE: I'll probably get 3 of the 5.

I need to play some catch up on the actual physicals. What have you liked from the new set so far? I've only heard 11 twice but enjoyed a lot.

3040468, I'm trying to withhold my review
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Sun Nov-13-22 12:19 PM
Cause honestly, I don't trust my thoughts on it with so few listens.
But because everything was released at once, I feel this need to judge it all...ha.
Off jump, like you, I really like 11. Probably one of their most consistent releases all the way through.

Untitled (God) is a close second followed by Today Tomorrow I think.
3040481, this take

reminds me of when Madlib was still on Stones Throw and would release any and everything he would work on, including his non-hip hop related works. I think it was some British based instrumental sub genre where he took on the name DJ Rels is where I realized I don't have to like any and everything Madlib releases because chances are I won't be a fan of the non-hip hop stuff he decides to delve into.

To bring this back to Sault, I've listened to 4 of the 5 albums and outside of one or two tracks, I can't get with the Untitled (God) album (I'm not a fan of gospel or whatever genre that album is) and the AIIR album (I'm not a fan of orchestral music). Earth and Today & Tomorrow click with me a ton and I'm hoping I can find those for a decent price domestically. I'm hoping I will find the time to listen to the 11 album as that appears to be the most 'Sault' friendly album of the five.

I applaud Inflo for being so diverse and prolific with his output; the fact he's a fellow Jamaican is another reason I root for the him as well. I do wonder outside of Adele and Michael Kiwanuka if he'll work out other non-Sault and non-British artists. The man appears as if he can wear many hats musically. Perhaps he released all five albums to satiate folks that will want Sault music so he can work on non-Sault stuff for a grip of time.
3040770, off topic: that dj rels album is amaaaaaazing!

3040774, RE: SAULT - X
Posted by thebigfunk, Mon Dec-12-22 10:30 AM
Some initial thoughts though I haven't gotten through *everything*:

11 is dope, favorite of the most recent round of releases.

Couldn't hang with Untitled (God), the weird decision to rely on what sounds like a screeching children's chorus from your church around the corner tanked it.

I need to revisit Earth and Today & Tomorrow again but I *think* I liked them both well enough, unsure of how much. Air's cool but definitely more of a mood. You can hear him listening to some of the orchestral experiments of 70s folks they admire, like Donny's orchestral arrangements.

3041723, The five new albums all available at Mr. Bongo
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Feb-03-23 12:32 PM
Giving folks a heads up as I'm guessing shipping costs from Mr. Bongo will be cheaper compared to buying the albums directly from Sault.
