3037859, we are alive in amazing times
Posted by Stadiq, Mon May-09-22 05:41 PM

Just think of all the "never gonna happen" releases that have come out the last several years-

this
Blackstar
the Black Thought solo stuff
Another Tribe album
Breeze Brewin solo
Act 2 plus another Jay Elect album
D

I'm not a Dre fan and I don't know if it is technically Detox but folks got Compton

I know I'm forgetting some too...

3037864, we still might get Detox this year

I got a scare on my vinyl preorder. Received an email with bad news. There was a suspicious purchase I didn't make last week on my CC so they cancelled it and are shipping me a new one. I was worried my preorder was cancelled since they couldn't charge it but they did give me the chance to update the payment method.

If they're already charging then it might be shipping soon, hopefully.

3039195, Mine too. That beat is gorgeous.
Posted by Brew, Mon Aug-15-22 10:37 AM
The beat during the verses has a Pink Floyd "Us & Them" feel, which is one of my favorite songs of all time. So I was immediately drawn to this track.
3039120, What's that KRS-One line?
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Aug-12-22 09:32 AM
"You ask guys to freestyle, it's the stuff that's on their albums."

3039128, DAE buy it off bandcamp?

did the pre-order early this morning, figured it would be officially released a few hours later (this happens with a lot of releases, not sure if the issue is on Bandcamp's side or the artists', kinda annoying but I want to support so whatevs), but now when I click on the purchase it says the artist has been deleted?!? Same thing with the contact link.

you want the man to sound like he did nearly thirty fucking years ago? Are you serious???

Dude is straight spitting. Lyrics/topics have gotten even better. This is the best/most consistent production he's had over an album since 06.

Guests on point. Sequencing straight.

And ya'll are worried about shit that is literally 30 years old? wtf?

Some ungrateful okayplayerhaters for sure.

I'm a 90's head but I don't know how some of yall do it with the constant looking back. Missing out on some excellent music.

Ironically, only on Okayplayer will you see someone complain about Thought's flow. Its...sad and unreal.

3039149, Phenomenal!!!!
Posted by stone_phalanges, Sat Aug-13-22 09:20 AM
In just about any other year this would be the clear AOTY, but this is a hard one. Everything is on point here; beats, rhymes, concepts, guests. It's running on repeat constantly.

I couldn't quite get with the 'streams of thought' series but this has blown me away, which is to say it has met my expectations. That may be part of the problem for me when it comes to 'streams of thought' they were good, but a black thought album that's "just" good it hard for me to digest.

THIS RIGHT HERE!!! This is exactly what I expect of Thought. Blowing the freaking doors off!

Sometimes, The Darkest Part, Saltwater, and Violas and Lupitas are my early favorites.

Thought is Thought. Really like the production, and strong guest lineup that mostly brought their A game. Loved hearing Killer Mike, Raekwon, and Conway especially.

going on lyrically, the beat floats, on some classic sixties foreign intrigue shit, where you lamping overseas in a nice fit.

DOOM's verse is dope. sounds like tariq heard it, and wrote to match the vibe (even to the point of inserting the California Highway Patrolmen reference to match DOOM's inexplicable dropping of CHPs and 'estrada').

whole album is crazy. just understated lyrical genius on every track and it felt like everybody was on they A game. (how could you not, considering who you rhyming with?)

so many jewels and gems. some strewn on the surface, on purpose, and others buried beneath, revealing themselves upon later listenings.

3039230, Agreed. My friend pointed out that it sounded like Dangermouse ...
Posted by Brew, Tue Aug-16-22 09:15 PM
Did a great job of tailoring each beat to fit the guest MCs just as well as the beats fit Thought's style. Pretty impressive to match a lot of MCs who you wouldn't necessarily would think would have the same type of vibes. The DOOM track captures this thought perfectly. You nailed it. The beat is breezy and floats, and sounds like a song that would've been perfect as a Thought solo *or* a DOOM solo.

I wonder if the DOOM verse is from some Dangerdoom-era leftover that DM re-did the beat for.

Anyway regarding the other songs and what my friend said, perhaps the most impressive example of this (even if it's not my favorite song, per se) is the beat for the song w/A$AP Rocky & RTJ. The beat seems to fit all 4 MCs perfectly, somehow, despite the fact that I never would've expected Rocky & RTJ to be on a track together because their styles seem so different, to me.

Posted by Beamer6178, Sat Aug-20-22 09:04 AM
Need to go back and give a damn listen. Vol. 2 with Salaam Remi was the most cohesive of the three but he has some goddamn bangers on each of them. "215," "Making a Murderer," "Thought v Everybody" are standouts, to name a few.
3039260, RE: this is about CC but cats shitting on Streams of Thought
Posted by spidey, Sat Aug-20-22 11:48 AM
Agreed, certified gems on those, just maybe not as cohesive as this new greatness...Love the fact that "Cheat Codes" can be run front to back, and I can just let it rock, no skips...
3039264, agreed, especially on vol 2
Posted by Stadiq, Sat Aug-20-22 11:10 PM

I'd still put Cheat Codes at the top, but Vol 2 is very close imo.

3039286, I agree...I actually love all three of them...

Volume 2 is the best of the Streams of Thought bunch...

But Cheat Codes is better than them all...
3039268, I Want To Like It But I'm Not Feeling The Production
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Aug-22-22 03:38 AM
I've "never" been a fan of Danger Mouse's production, I remember when I bought Jemini the Gifted One's 2nd album which DM produced and it was a let down, maybe I was expecting Jemini to spit over mid-90's type production instead, to me the production didn't fit but it wasn't bad just kind of boring.

Anyway, a year later Prince Po's first solo album came out and I hated DM's beats on it, overall the album was so lacking compared to the solo stuff he released on 12" singles years before even though he had beats from Madlib & J-Zone who I do like.

I basically gave up on him when he put out that remix of the Black Album, I personally can't listen to it, I never understood all the hype behind it, I still consider Kev Brown's & 9th's remixes of the Black Album the best I've heard out of all the ones that came out.

So back to BT's new album, yeah the rhyming is expected, the lyrics are top notch, but with him I want the old BT not the "let me spit some complex rhymes over any beat" type BT; for a long while I've been wondering does BT have the Nas syndrome where he can't pick good beats?

Overall, there were like 3 joints I did like but none of them nor will the album get any replay from me, I feel it's better stuff out there that keeps my interest.

3039274, ...I disagree for the most part...
Posted by spidey, Mon Aug-22-22 02:36 PM
My take...it's great to hear an MC of Thought's status work with a producer that is more on the fringes, coming with beats that are more challenging, avant garde. It's brave, and speaks to Thoughts interest in his own artistry. That said, if you not feeling it, it is what it is. Since you brought up Nas though, let's go there. Nas is still, in a lot of ways, stuck in this what's hot now mentality, and seems to want to push that he is still relevant. I get that, but would say he is kind of taking the safe route by doing work with Hit Boy. The last time he went out of the box was with the Damian Marley LP...Nas fans, many of them including me, want to see him get out of the box some more and work with atypical producers/musicians...

As a producer Danger Mouse might have been innovative 15 years ago, but his style isn't fringe anymore (if it ever was). The only innovative part of the beats on this project is how badly some of them are mixed vis a vis the vocals. I'm not saying they're bad beats but I wouldn't call them challenging or avant garde. There's nothing surprising here.

I think there *is* some chemistry between the beats/DM and Thought. But it's not something that is coming from the beats being especially innovative.

Nas is still, in a lot of ways, stuck
>in this what's hot now mentality, and seems to want to push
>that he is still relevant. I get that, but would say he is

You can look at this another way though, which is that in some ways the Thought/DM pairing is *exactly* what you'd expect from a vet who made his biggest mark in the late 90s/early '00s (esp with the neo-soul-ish links).

Nas has had highs and lows with his keeping-up-with-the-times approach but *that's* it's own challenge, perhaps a more genuine one than Thought rhyming over boom-bap-meets-psych-inflected-plunderphonics. The fact that he's found real synergy with Hit Boy and now has three really solid records that *don't* sound like he's trying to remake Illmatic or just "take it back" to a classic sound is an achievement. Hit boy has clearly found inspiration in the soundscape of earlier Nas but he's meshing it with something more current. It's not always successful but I'd argue it's probably more innovative, for both Hit Boy and Nas, than Danger Mouse's work here.

I'm not dismissing the beats on the record, I think they're fine (a few clunkers). But Thought's the star here, not the instrumentals.

This is what I said in a previous post.I like this album and maybe that was the approach for this project. but I hope in the next project he can work with music that has more style where it forces him to be more unique with the flow and delivery. Otherwise he is eventually going in the GZA and Nas route where you start sounding boring.
3039280, Who are some active rappers whose flows you like?

You mentioned DYWM, but I’m curious who you like right now in terms of their flow?
3039305, there's not a single beat on there....

……50% of the listeners are there for their art. And DangerMouse SHOULD feel that way and respect his art that way.

BUT
