3034825, New Release Friday 2021-09-24 Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Sep-24-21 08:56 AM
Feels like the biggest day in a while (at least for stuff that interests me, lol). Haven't dug too deep but in hip hop and r&b there's at least:
Blu - The Color Blu(e)
Solemn Brigham (of Marlowe) - South Sinner Street
Nao - And Then Life Was Beautiful (with features from Lucky Daye, Lianne La Havas, and serpentwithfeet)
Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Side B
And then some other fun stuff including...
Esperanza Spalding - Songwrights Apothecary Lab
Theo Croker - BLK2LIFE||A FUTURE PAST
Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine - A Beginner's Mind
Quite a few singles of interest too. What's everyone checking out?

I was starting to get excited about Big Boi and Sleepy but it looks like I wasted my time on that one for now/it didn't drop. When I went looking for that one last night, my app slapped me in the face with the Hitler B, so I'll be on that one today!
I want/need to spread my wings though. I want to take some more time for R&B because it seems clear that folks are making good stuff out there.

Forgot that Big Boi/Sleepy was supposed to drop... if Donda hadn't happened I'd say this is the most fumbled roll-out in a while, lol. I'm honestly not too interested at this point. Singles didn't grab me at all...

There's been some great stuff this year. I haven't checked out the Nao yet but I'm expecting it to pretty good. If you haven't checked that Cleo Sol "Mother" album yet, that's great, too!

Wow. Good looking out. I’m listening to this right now. I had no idea what I was about to get into. My goodness!

3034833, Is that Blu based on his 2009 HerFavoriteColo(u)r LP Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Sep-24-21 10:52 AM
That's something I played a lot. I'll have to check that out. Sometimes I don't know somebody has an album out until I see this post..ha.
WAYNE SNOW https://waynesnow.bandcamp.com/album/figurine?from=fanpub_fb
Almost forgot about dude. Loved his Freedom TV album. The joints I've been hearing on this new project are right down my lane. Paid for the vinyl import...I DON'T CARE I DON'T CARE! That cover is killer!
Let me add in ROMderful has a new single out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfZ76rTqIDo
His Ice Cream Clones is worth a listen (i've said this in this post before...but I dig it) https://romderful.bandcamp.com/album/ice-cream-clones

It's all new material, beats and rhymes are very much like the Miles album from last year (in a good way, not necessarily redundant or anything). Not sure who produced it all.
It's themed around the color of blue which, tbh, I thought I'd get tired of but overall it works well. I do feel like he'd kind of rolled through a lot of that material on the last album... I didn't listen too close yet so maybe he's spinning it somehow. Anyhow, good first listen, probably get a lot of play for a while (but most Blu releases do right now).

New name to me - thanks!

Alright, I'm gonna check this and finally get to that Ice Cream Clones, too.

3034838, Its his best in a while... Posted by Stadiq, Fri Sep-24-21 02:32 PM
Miles was overcooked and corny in parts.
So far, this is really fucking good.

3035301, i found the rapping pretty similar to miles Posted by mista k5, Wed Oct-27-21 01:12 PM
the beats didnt quite do it for me on this one. not as much as miles. the second half of this one was really good though.

3034835, Hiero - Soil Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Sep-24-21 11:05 AM

3034840, Westside Gunn - Hell on Earth pt. 2!!! Posted by DJR, Fri Sep-24-21 02:54 PM
That’s a banger! Haven’t heard the whole album yet but that song is hard!

>That’s a banger! Haven’t heard the whole album yet but >that song is hard!
That song.....whew! Mean mug and all of that.
I can't lie, the album seems like the best thing he's ever released (I know, prisoner of the moment). Gunn is not my favorite rapper by any stretch and frankly can be annoying in large doses so an album heavy with features, mostly limiting him to 1 verse per song, over classic Griselda boom-bap, easy win for me.
__ I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!
Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

3034843, Producer who made that beat is a woman! Posted by DJR, Fri Sep-24-21 05:40 PM
I honestly can’t think of any hip hop beatmakers that are women. Her name is Sovren. I had to look up who made that, and was shocked it was an unknown(to me).
Dope of WSG to keep putting people on and giving them a platform.

3034842, those are some nice features on the NAO Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-24-21 03:35 PM
i havent listened to it yet and i was already excited for it.
forgot about the blu, definitely checking that one out too.

3035024, i want to like the NAO album more than I do Posted by thebigfunk, Tue Oct-05-21 09:36 AM
Something about her voice just doesn't work for me. I had to fight the urge to skip tracks on the first listen even though some of the production is great and the actual vocal *arrangements* were engaging. It's her tone that doesn't work and that's not a diss to her, more just that I don't personally enjoy it.
Might grow on me though.

3035300, yeah her voice is definitely not for everyone Posted by mista k5, Wed Oct-27-21 01:10 PM
im a bit surprised it doesnt bother me. there are moments were her voice hits really well but i definitely understand why people would not get with it.
this one is a lot more polished than her last album. i really like it but i kinda wish it was a bit more like her last one. we will see how i like it on repeat listens.
