I guess that's why this specific match-up would be strange to me though ... and why the larger format itself is sort of weird.

Because taking popularity out of the equation, record for record, The Roots take it to me -- no problem. I don't even think it's just fandom talking, I think they just have a lot more to pull from. You could probably do 2 twenty-song sets and still not scrape the bottom of their top-tier stuff. Again, not singles but just their best work. (Fun project, maybe?) Pairing them with another group in that milieu - less hit-oriented but with a solid catalog - makes more sense to me...

But yeah, in terms of sheer popularity and recognizable hits, you're right. I don't know how much Wyclef's solo work really brings to the table but if we're folding in features and Miseducation, you could flesh out a 20-song set for the Fugees that would impress.
