3034207, New Release Friday 2021-08-27
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Aug-27-21 10:01 AM
At first glance not a ton out there. What's everyone looking for this week? If nothing's calling you, what are you catching up on or still working through from recent drops?

3034208, Aaron Taylor - Be My Muse (gold edit) ep
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Aug-27-21 10:06 AM
Four songs from last year's ICARUS given the remix treatment by someone named Skinshape. No great revelation but I enjoyed them and a good reminder to keep going back to the lp, which I really liked a lot.

3034209, Westside Gunn - Hitler Wears Hermès 8

also Evidence - Squirrel Tape Instrumentals, Vol. 2

Those are the two I will be checking out over the next few days.
3034210, Gunn's album is really making me crave a new Stove God release

3034212, Yeah, I see he’s alllll over this album
Posted by DJR, Fri Aug-27-21 11:59 AM
which is a good thing, I’m a big fan of him.

It seems that his features on Gunn’s album last summer raised his profile and got his name out there quite a bit more, this should continue to help him.

Yes. He's such a fun rapper. He usually says something that works on me every time out...even when he does his sing a hook thing.

I really wonder what Roc is doing nowadays too. Maybe he feels like a bonus boss type rapper who shouldn't be all up on other people's records all the time? I don't know.

3034213, Yeah, I only saw it from following Ev on social media

it’s the first release from his own label, is what he said.
3034243, Soul samples and Stove God = winner
Posted by DJR, Sun Aug-29-21 10:50 PM
This is one of his better albums IMO.
3034244, whats with the fucking hitler fetish?!??

boom boom boom boooom boom.
3034245, It was a flip of “The Devil Wears Prada”
Posted by DJR, Sun Aug-29-21 11:25 PM
and I assume because the first one is what kindve put him on the map, he stuck with it as a series.
3034214, Makaya McCraven - Frank's Tune (single)
Posted by A Love Supreme, Fri Aug-27-21 12:48 PM
Album out November 19 on Blue Note. Single sounds really good.

Can't wait to check out the single and that roster is awesome. Been on a Jeff Parker kick lately and love whenever they come together.

Some other stuff jazz stuff today:
Web Web/Max Herre - with Brandee Younger, Yusef Lateef, and others -- listened this morning, first listen was great, eager to dive in deeper

Kenny Garrett - Sounds from the Ancestors - a few tracks were a little too smoothed out but most of this was super solid. Took me a minute to find anything about the lineup so sharing here for anyone interested, from Glide magazine:
"The core ensemble for the recording are the same musicians who accompanied him at Newport augmented by guests. The core group is pianist Vernell Brown, Jr., bassist Corcoran Holt, drummer Ronald Bruner, and percussionist Rudy Bird. Guests include drummer Lenny White, pianist and organist Johnny Mercier, trumpeter Maurice Brown, conquero Peditro Martinez, bata percussionist Dreiser Durruthy, and singers Dwight Trible, Jean Baylor, Linny Smith, Chris Ashley Anthony and Sheherazade Holman. Garrett sings on two tracks, plays electric piano on four, and does a piano intro and outro on the title track."

Might’ve even been you. He’s nice. Will check this out.
3034216, Brother Ali dropped an EP of 1-minute long songs
Posted by Oak27, Fri Aug-27-21 01:49 PM
he references May 5th a few times which was the release date for All the Beauty in This Whole Life, so some, most or all of these are from that time period.

As a side-note, I kinda dig these little EPs of short songs as vehicles for artists to get some new ideas out there and keep their music on people's radars/wet their fans' beaks until their next official project drops. Kota's dropped one of these each of the last few years and I wouldn't mind it becoming a trend.
3034262, this was GREAT
Posted by thebigfunk, Mon Aug-30-21 12:01 PM
I don't know if I listened to it at just the right moment but I was clued in to the speakers from start to finish. One of those rappers that legit gets better at his craft over time and becomes more and more engaging because of it.

This already has me planning to pull out Ali albums that I haven't listened to in a minute, but first I'm going to play this on repeat for a while...

Hope You're Doin' Better is my joint.

It immediately made me think of Carrtoons Saturday Morning LP.
It also reminds me a lot of The Internet. Grooves on grooves.
3034221, Big Red Machine
Posted by Frank Mackey, Fri Aug-27-21 02:42 PM
The first one still gets regular play, so looking forward to digging into this one.
3034223, careful

That Fleet Foxes/Anais Mitchell single got stuck in my head for like a week solid, lol --- one of those Taylor Swift tunes was hard to shake, too. I'm thinking this might be a case where the singles were truly the best of the album but hope I'm wrong.
