Idk what this is all about but Royce to me just has one of the illest voices and flows for a battle scenario. Lupe is incredibly talented, but team Royce over here.

...and Lupe though very talented, never cared for his voice, matter of fact it's the weakest voices out of any respectable mc I can think of...
3033451, I'd lean Royce to win a battle
Posted by Oak27, Fri Jul-16-21 02:30 PM
Mainly because Lupe's disses would prob take 4 years to fully dissect and understand.

>Mainly because Lupe's disses would prob take 4 years to fully

Not that Royce doesn't have deep bars too, of course. But in a battle you need to be able to get those "OH SHIT" moments and I feel like Royce is far better at that type of emceeing than Lupe is, despite the immense talent of both emcees.

I'm taking Royce by a hair.
3033592, Oddly, the battle went in the opposite direction
Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon Jul-26-21 08:20 AM

Royce was hyper verbose

Lupe was very direct and pointed

Either way: I enjoyed this exchange, dope music

Lupe could/would drop 6 diss tracks in one night.

Royce is cool but a little overrated around these parts imo. That said, saying Lupe would get him easy isn't really a diss. Lupe is on another level.

3033461, Smells like a publicity stunt. They do a podcast together.
Posted by mrhood75, Sat Jul-17-21 02:28 PM
Plus this is basically feeding off of Royce “challenging” RJ Payne a few weeks ago.

They’ll probably “battle” but I doubt it’s anything serious.
3033472, To be fair something like this was coming from jump.
Posted by phemom, Sat Jul-17-21 10:38 PM
Their personalities don't match at all, I guess that's the angle but those 2 having a show don't make sense.....so I'm not surprised it's turning into quasi-beef.

Hopefully we get some actual songs out of this....Lu,Royce,Mickey Factz,Payne have been dancing in a circle for like 3 weeks now, not one song has dropped from anyone.

figured they're obviously just playing around or its some promo stuff.

i did watch the royce video speaking on it but im not sure i need to go back and try to figure out how it escalated. i saw part of a video by lupe after where he was talking about the house ep. seemed like he was saying it was all good now.

How and why are they beefing?

Posted by mista k5, Thu Jul-22-21 10:56 AM
maybe i wasnt paying enough attention but i wouldnt had even thought the royce one was a lupe diss. not really top royce quality.

lupe's got better as it kept going. built up nicely.

i still havent gone back to see how this actually escalated and thus seems like its more marketing than anything but if they keep dropping tracks i might need to go back and see.

two of my favorite rappers the past 10/5 years. im hoping its not actually serious but if it is then definitely hope theyre keeping it on wax. im thinking (hoping?) this is going to end up as build up to a collabo album.
3033529, here is some background info i saw someone post:
Posted by spitfire, Thu Jul-22-21 11:50 AM
Quick little run down

Royce and Lupe did a IG live after RJ Payne made a statement saying him and Ransom are the two best rappers currently. Royce said rappers gonna have to prove they're the best if they keep saying it. Lupe told Royce he's not the best, he's good, but not the best. Lupe doesn't think any of the rappers saying they're the best are the best. Lupe was saying to prove who's the best they need to go to "End of the Week" and enter the competition to prove who's the best rapper objectively.

That same day Royce, Lupe, Mickey, Ransom, RJ Payne all got on IG Live and had banter back and forth, it was relatively friendly, though got heated at moments.

In subsequent days, there would be random lives between Lupe/Royce/Mickey, sometimes all 3 together, but usually 2 of the 3, kinda amping up a potential Royce and Lupe battle on URL. To the point Beasley (Co-owner), reached out to Mickey several times to set it up, but Lupe really had no interest, while Royce low key wanted to do it. This is when it started getting a little bit more "heated"

Lux and Mook were debating who'd win between Royce and Lupe in a battle, Lux had Lu, Mook had Royce. Lux called Lupe to amp it up. It kinda came to a head when Royce was on IG live with Lux/Mook/Mickey Factz and Guru (Jay's engineer). Guru/Lux and Mook were amping up the Royce and Lupe battle saying it needs to happen ASAP on Smack or RBE or any battle league. Lupe finally joins in on the convo, and basically said he doesn't really want to battle Royce, but will if nikkas keep talking shyt, he said he'll basically destroy Royce. Royce called him a "bytch" and said he'd "Break his neck" if he talked like that to him in person. That's what caused the real rift. Lupe left the live, got on his own live and did a freestyle for like 9 minutes getting at Royce, and then dropped a quick 2 minute diss (It was intended to Mook and Rex for talking reckless, but a lot of people took it as a Royce diss, but it wasn't).

Then today Royce dropped his diss, and then a few hours later Lupe dropped his.

both tracks were really dope
need to listen again
royce's delivery is top notch

Lupe also dropped this

"Jean Grey"

definitely don't think its a marketing thing
Royce isn't that kind of artist
Lupe just releases music when he feels like it and is far removed from that kinda of thing
3033531, Lupe killed it. I've had it on loop for hrs now.
Posted by Nabs, Thu Jul-22-21 02:01 PM
I can't wait for the next round. Royce is going to have to turn it up.
3033538, Both songs are magnificent and I'm enjoying this.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Jul-22-21 05:11 PM

The Royce SONG is breathtaking as a standalone SONG.
And some of the bars on it are out-of-this world.

But if we want to go with a battle, I'd say the Lupe. His one
is cleverer. It's subtle and crafted directly to the conflict.
The Royce one is an amazing song with the beef folded in parts.
(No shade...again...both songs amazing)

But really I'm too busy enjoying this to get into who
is winning

That Lupe track

He managed to be characteristically Lupe but really go in.

There's memorable one-liner after one-liner, tons of his type of wordplay, his humor -- but it just cuts deeper than I expected, lol.

I found that Royce track pretty boring tbh (but I'm admittedly not a big fan, appreciate his lyricism but never really got the hype)

Hope we get a few more rounds like this.

~ i could still snort you under the table ~
3033544, i love royce but his track was pretty mid
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jul-23-21 09:28 AM
especially for him. he didn't sound interested at all and he was all over the place (not uncommon for him). the linked video had poor audio quality on his vocals so that didn't help. he definitely had some bars and got some hits in. his flow was good but the delivery was just boring. the beat was cool. that was the weakest part on lupes track, i didnt really like the beat.

lupe came out precise and stayed focused. it was a typical laid back lupe but the bars hit hard. it made me feel like he had more he was holding back on, like this was just a warning shot yet it hit harder than royce's.

im hoping royce comes back with some real fire.
3033548, Yea it's weird. Per what Oak and I were talking about above ...
Posted by Brew, Fri Jul-23-21 10:48 AM

Posted by snacks, Fri Jul-23-21 01:37 PM
Not tryna be the fun police, but ... I wish that it didn't have to come to this, or at least that I could enjoy it now that this is where we are. I would say that Lupe "won," but I didn't particularly enjoy listening to any of them because of how unnecessary this beef is to me. If anything, it made me angry because Lu got this track out so quickly but hasn't released actual music since Drogas Wave (unless I missed some one-offs)

I was a fan of the pod, but this whole ordeal makes me feel like Huey did in S1 of The Boondocks when he said "we could all be reading a book right now"
3033562, Basically their “friends” amped them into beefing?

I almost forgot, but he did put the House EP with Kaelin Ellis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5NcTf2KLbQ

He puts out freestyles every so often on his social media. Right before Drogas Wave, he put out like 10 of them that I still listen to. His freestyles are some of my fav. Lupe material, if we're being honest.

This year he put out a few, here's what I remember:

Jean Grey - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS9Vl8muEsw
Kara Walker - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zhKEm41geQ
DOOM freestyle - https://www.instagram.com/p/CQq3pGsFeUl/

I think he recently said he was working on a few projects.

A few joints he threw up and deleted a few yrs ago:

I liked Royce's joint cause it's more of a three (was it three or four) verse song with little wordplay jabs here & there but it was so random that that song could've been a diss song about anybody, it wasn't so direct.

With Lupe's freestyle, hit was really going after Royce, some lines were corny, (the singing at the beginning was terrible too) but a lot of it hit home like a real battle, dissing him, his persona, & whatnot; the lines about him only being famous cause of Em & Premier were funny as well.

I would give the point to Lupe but I would never want to hear it again, unlike Royce's track I can listen to that a few more times and enjoy it as just another lyrically overpacked song.

3033570, Lupe treated Royce like he was Clarence with 2 parents

Lupe stays being goof ball. His early mixtapes are good. His albums are trash. Who listens to Food and Liquor??? That shit had no impact his other projects are forgettable Tetsuo & Youth... No thanks. Royce I can listen to but he is a CB4 rapper, very repetitive. But I do like his catalog.15 years ago this may have got some headlines... Maybe

3033596, Royce was like “wanna see me rap fast?”
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jul-26-21 12:50 PM
Its like he was reading from a teleprompter that was moving faster than the beat.

He smothered his hot bars with some wet blanket ass wordplay that wasn’t needed.

3033597, Haha yea that's been his style lately and I don't really like it.
Posted by Brew, Mon Jul-26-21 12:52 PM
There's no energy to it. The bars are are really good and intricate per usual. They read great. But they do not flow at all with most of the beats he's rapping on.

And at the end of his bars he's almost like trailing off lazily, like he's bored or something. He's been doing that whole thing for a couple years now and I've never liked it.
3033599, I wanted that voice with the Lupe type delivery
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jul-26-21 01:02 PM
like someone said up top, this went the exact opposite of how I expected it to go.

although I really didn’t expect Lupe to ever lose this battle because dude is a monster. Don’t let the voice fool you, Lupe is on a whole different level lyrically.
