The legendary unreleased track wherein Black Though does impressions/tributes to other rappers he loves.

This would be a psyche damaging if it was released in 1995. I can only guess it wasn't released because it was not all done on instruments and didn't fit the story - or maybe they thought it'd start beef.

Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCbf7XpbFt0

He raps:
Guru
The Jungle Brothers (Both Sammy B and Mike G)
Q-tip
Pete Rock
O.D.B. & Method Man
Chuck D.
Busta Rhymes
Kool. G. Rap
Ice Cube (Da Lench Mob era)

Best line, for me, is the Kool G. inspired/rhyme:
I'm a beast like An American Where in London Is.

The *very first time* I ever saw The Roots black Though started doing his O.D.B. voice - I was confused as fuck until it hit me what was going on.

this is pretty incredible!

that G Rap line was my favorite too. it might be time for me to formally check out dude's catalog.
3033176, someone explain that line
Posted by blackfoot_female, Sat Jun-26-21 11:45 PM
i get the reference to american werewolf in paris, but what does "where in london is" even mean?
3033177, I messed up

>i get the reference to american werewolf in paris, but what
>does "where in london is" even mean?

"I'm a beast like An American Werewolf in London Is."

My auto-corrrect change it to Where and dropped wolf.

3033180, man, this was super dope

His Q-tip was eerie close to the original here, imo --- like, spitting sound image. Guru nearly there, too.

I wonder if it wasn't released bc it could have seemed a bit gimmicky, a bit karaoke -- we've all seen Thought do stuff like this live and thought it was crazy but on record, maybe they worried it wouldn't come off right. Not so much start beef but feel too much like a bit.

I remember reading that this became an explicit issue/concern for them later, in the mid-'00s, but I could see it being something they were figuring out how to manage early on.

3033237, Would love for 15 to come thru with the details on this.

3033266, I got the liner notes now

DJ Premiere on the scratches.

Produced by Kelo + Grand Negaz
3033277, my fav is the Q-Tip verse haha
Posted by MeshaMeesh, Thu Jul-01-21 10:29 PM
I wish the instrumental of this entire song was released, specifically for that verse.

I hope more artists in the future release their instrumentals, a cappellas, and stripped down versions of their songs alongside remixes and rarities. It’s really all I want lol.

Common’s “Resurrection” deluxe edition was just that.

Like I said in a later post, maybe that stuff will come in another reissue.

3033376, I placed this album in my Top 10 so far this year...just off this song...

Unbelievable...uncanny...

The fact this was likely recorded in 93 or 94...insane...
3033378, Amazing track

After I saw The Roots do HipHop 101 in shows, I always wondered why they didn’t work the “I’m every MC” chant in there

With another ?uest rhyme that got deleted.

I think I also hear E.L.O doing a verse, but there's another rapper on here I don't recognize.

Honestly I see why this one didn't get released - it's just 'okay' IMHO.

We've heard this in some form back in the early days. It's also on that Montreux 1994 video that I can't quite locate right now.

This is a solid song, this should have at least been a B-side.

This was out there from a few months ago.

Instead of the repeated verse from Black Thought they have verses from Malik B and ?uestlove too!

I wish there was a CD version of this box set. If only for the liner notes. I don't have a record player so paying $100 for liner notes isn't cost-effective for me.

Quick question, have the songs been remastered? I would imagine they were given how deep of an audiophile 15 is.
3033236, Say remastered
Posted by handle, Tue Jun-29-21 04:48 PM
The exclusive 4LP of Do You Want More?!!!??! comes as the original 2LP album remastered from original tapes, along with new bonus tracks curated by Questlove. The Lift-top box with Euro sleeves comes with a beautiful foil finish and a booklet with rare photos and Essays by Questlove and Black Thought, as well as track-by-track commentary.
3033245, There is a difference, at least on Spotfiy
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Wed Jun-30-21 06:06 PM
Spotify has both the original DYWM and the re-release and there's a distinct difference in the brightness and the richness of the bass.

The album sounds great. Props to ?uest for the work. Do you know if Bob Power was involved in the remastering?
3033181, I Want It, But Only For Sides "G"

I've owned the clean promo of "Do You Want More?" ever since it came out, but they left off quite a few songs on it, plus it's the edited version, so when a few years ago when they released the entire album as it was on cd on vinyl I should've copped it but I didn't cause I didn't have the funds; but now they got this expanded version, I basically only want it for four songs cause I already have all the 12" singles & the EP on vinyl.

I can still buy the regular double LP version which isn't expensive but getting this deluxe edition for 4 extra songs & a well worth reading liner notes would be my only reason to cop it and I'm not sure if I even really want to shell out that kind of cash, it would mainly just sit in my collection collecting dust after listening to it once cause I wouldn't want to damage it.

Side note, I'm surprised they didn't put the live version of "Proceed II" the one with Joe Sample & Phil Woods on this?

I might just wait until they do the 3rd album, that's got to have some interesting unreleased material, cause by then record labels wasn't putting out promo only remixes & b-sides as much as the early 90's.

I've also owned the rarities/remixes, and only wanted this for four songs. Yet, the other tracks I did have were all "bootlegged" mp3s off of some blog some years back via the "Do This Well" compilation. So I did appreciate having "Kelo's Mix" in friggin hi-res haha.

I originally pre-ordered the digital hi-res album on Qobuz back in January. So, as soon as it hit my inbox the other day and I listened, I immediately said to myself "if i don't buy the 4LP set with them liner notes... I will REGRET it". So I shelled out $75 in addition to the $20 I bought on the album at the beginning of the year. Smh lmao... i never got the TFA deluxe and I'm kicking myself about that too.

I also wanted the live version of "Proceed" and the instrumental of "There's Something Going On". And just instrumentals in general. But maybe that'll come out for the 50th anniversary 🥲

thank G O D for Affirm becauseeeee... wheew chile. omg I'm so happy! Now I'll have both of their special edition LPs. but i also kinda feel suckered because I thought they were all gonna be limited in manufacturing the special edition ones. guess not lol

also..... i don't even have a record player. but when i get one, i'm not sure if i ever will play these on there. if i'm financially able in the future, i'll just buy the standard edition remastered LPs and bump them.

I wanted this on vinyl for years so I'm glad to get it now with all the remixes/unreleased songs

3033271, I forgot how good this album is
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Thu Jul-01-21 01:57 PM
Listening to it now, 25 years out from its release, it's easier to get a sense of the music outside of the context of the era.

15 has mentioned before that one of the reasons he feels The Roots never got embraced like Tribe and De la is that The Roots are children of the Native Tongue movement. And as a result, they could be seen as copies of that movement and not something all to their own. At least I know I felt that way about the band early on.

But it's clear they had a vision. They took the model of the Native Tongues and added richness to their music in a way that I don't think the Native Tongues achieved.

The musicianship is there. And granted there's a heavy jazz influence throughout the songs. But from Proceed to Distortion to Static to You Ain't Fly shows a range that they continued to develop over time.

It's just a fun album.

All good points. Word.

I first heard it in ‘96 (freshman year of college) when my homegirl traded it with me for my recently acquired Blowout Comb album.
It took a while for Blowout Comb to really hit me so I was open to hearing DYWM and it instantly had me hooked and captivated.
It was definitely jazzy, fun and just pure mic skills, versatility, originality and dope sounds on full display. Even the album cover alone was special.

Any idea why these reissues aren't available digitally other than on Streaming? I bought the 4LP Vinyl and love it, but would prefer the digital download for the commute/workday.

the updated mix edit to "Mellow My Man". The hook fades out before the Black Thought jazz scat bridge. That fade out irritates the hell out of me for some reason.
