I'll always remember Branford Marsalis' sax solo on Shanice's "I Love Your Smile".
In fact a lot of New Jack Swing stuff kept the band element of instrumental solos.
Shanice was 1991.
Mary J. Blige's debut was 1992.
It was a wrap after that.
