3032073, New Release Friday - 2021-04-23
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Apr-23-21 11:10 AM
A few new releases off the top:
Cordae dropped a short EP - "Just Until..." - including Q Tip on a hook

Kota dropped a single, "Outside"

new track from Alchemist/Earl/Navy Blue - "Nobles"

new Alfa Mist full-length, "Bring Backs"

I saw a few others, too - will come back and list them later. What have you seen that you're hoping to check out? What have you been listening to this past week or two?

3032082, I don't even remember how I found this

But have been listening to it a lot the past few days. Like many others, I've been enjoying Japanese pop a lot. Then this comes in and combines it with lofi sound collage stuff and I'm in heaven.

3032089, awesome - thanks for sharing

3032090, Lots of YMO and their member's solo projects

Absolutely love Technodelic and BGM.

Ryuchi Sakamoto: Thousand Knives, B-2 Unit, Esperanto
Haruomi Hosono: Philharmony
Akiko Yano: Tadaima

The Light in the Attic comps of Ambient and City pop.

This guy: https://bison-records.bandcamp.com/album/sound-of-turning-earth

And I found this huge comp called Golden Pavillion of Dreams. I'm sort of ashamed to say this, but I found the individual tracks were pay what you want, so I just downloaded them all separately without paying anything :/. Pretty sure it's a bootleg comp anyway? Hmmm, now I just saw it's not on bandcamp anymore. Here's the tracklist anyway:

3032086, Topaz Jones - Don't Go Tellin Your Momma

One of the best rap projects I've heard so far this year. Had no idea who he was until Phonte posted the project but it's well worth the listen and Phonte has yet another fire guest verse.

Whoa - this release is serious! Had no expectations going in but there's a wide range of styles here, lots of funk/r&b influence. Eager to dig into the credits but on first listen this is a lot of fun with some solid rapping and really interesting arrangements.

Trying to think of something to compare it to but coming up short.

Great phonte feature.... And there's a gabriel garzon-montano feature, too.

on first listen i have to say its the first special rap album of the year. i thought the kota was great but not necessarily special. this one is special.

a nice blend of styles, kind of reminds me of a few different artists but not in a bad way. hopefully it holds up on repeat listens.
3032151, Racquel Rodriguez - Sweet Side

Out of LA, she's dropped single all year and finally dropped the entire album. Smooth, 90s influenced R&B with a VOICE.

She's very natural and makes her vocals look so easy and effortless and is funny and has a good interaction with her band in the live videos.

She's been livestreaming with a couple band members during the pandemic, and she has some horns and background vocals on an MPC that she punches in herself while singing.

My personal favorite album of the year and maybe more.

Undone (one of those songs with kinda sad lyrics but is uptempo and makes you want to get up)

And because it's OKP..a D'Angelo cover

She's got a prettyy good sized catalog on bandcamp too.

3032155, it's great!

Thanks for posting about her a month or two ago -- the singles were really nice and was excited to see the full-length out.

It's straightforward without being bland or overly predictable -- just really well-written, well-performed songs that stay with you for a while. Really enjoy it.

I thought I had posted about her but I wasn't sure, glad you enjoyed it.

That's a great take on her. It takes me back to a simpler time in music, there's a lot more going on now with instrumentation and vocals (which I thoroughly enjoy) but this definitely scratches an itch for music I grew up on without sounded dated.
3032179, This album was nice...

Very strong 90s R&B vibe. I enjoyed the album. I'll be keeping my eye out for her.

Album coming in June.

I’m liking this a lot.

3032177, his solo records are usually pretty solid
Posted by thebigfunk, Thu Apr-29-21 10:34 AM
And he's had a couple of features lately too -- feel like he's having a pretty good moment. Haven't listened to this yet but looking forward to checking it and the new lp.
