I'm not sure if anyone involved ever came up with anything better. I know it is a fav of Snoop too. It is just so perfect for what they were trying to do with Snoop, Dogg Pound, and Death Row as a whole. Just wow. And getting the Dramatics for it too? Excellent. I am a SUCKER for good interpolations and samples since I'm the age where my parents loved the 70s stuff, I grew up with the 80s stuff, and the 90s was filled with rap music that pulled heavy from all of it.
3030959, Hell yea. Agreed on all the above. It's such a smooth ass beat.

THREE GREAT ONES. Nas Is Like should top everyone's list. Guess Who's Back is Kanye's best beat IMO. Xxplosive is soooo fucking flames. Same sample source as Lil' Kim's "Drugs," which I named above.

Yeah. It's the song that I would save my max volume for back then. Then I'd keep it for Mainstream and Decatur Psalm.

I argue with folks all the time that Goodie MOB deserve lots of credit for pushing Kast forward. They were, in general, older dudes. And some very 'complete' rappers early on in DF's existence. And those two songs make me comfy with the stance. And this is with a crazy amount of love for both groups.

Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Apr-05-21 08:22 PM
It's amazing how Mobb Deep basically carved out their own sound lyrically and sound-wise, Havoc's beats was so original that it had every Queens artist trying to mimic it.

Before "Hell On Earth" was out, "Still Shinin'" was a promo only b-side of the "Temperture's Rising" 12" and when I heard this song I probably listened to it ten times in a row; I knew after that, that "Infamous" was just the tip of the iceberg of more to come of the new Queensbridge sound; also that part of the beat at the end where it changes, whoooaaa damn he could've used that for a whole other song it was so ill.

I REALLY love Hollow Bones too. And like so many other grand producers, we could argue all day about Rza and TM's best stuff with such an open-ended request.

But this right here? Yeah, I remember watching rap city and being perplexed and engaged like a damn puppy every time this came on. Or like the animals on Pride Rock with Mufasa was talking. It is just one of those ones that led to like hundreds of other songs. And these dudes all still look insane on this video. Who knew?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBwAxmrE194

This song video could easily be considered the template for stuff like Griselda's entire existence. Lots of Alchemist too.

I need to listen to it again.

But now that you mention it, I remember thinking it was half GREAT, and half just OK, at the time of its release.

Eminem Show had a few. The aforementioned Square Dance, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, Til I Collapse, When the Music Stops ...

I think Square Dance is my favorite of them. Patiently Waiting is good too, tho.

Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Mar-23-21 02:32 AM
This was a gem to find when I first listened to the "Substitute" soundtrack back in '96, the funny part is that the song isn't listed as a remix, so many people never thought it would be anything other than the regular album version on the soundtrack unless you saw the movie or actually listened to the soundtrack; it took me forever to find the promo 12" for the remix to this though; then later on found out Buckwild even did a second remix for this song as well.

Posted by Brew, Wed Mar-24-21 09:36 AM
I meant to post them last nite, fell asleep, said "I'll post them this morning."

Great minds.

Those beats are insane. "Who Got Some .." is, as the name would imply, on that hardcore west coast gangsta shit. "21 Jumpstreet" is the silky smooth form of g-funk.

Both are so so so incredibly perfect. That album needs to be on Spotify.

This reminds me, the company who bought Death Row years back has been mostly a letdown. I thought we were gonna get a bunch of dope unreleased, rare shit out of them but it's basically just been reissues of Tupac's albums and shit and a couple t-shirts, from what I can tell. Brutal. There's such a great opportunity to cash in on DR nostalgia since those of us who grew up with them are of "that age" at this point. I would spend untold amounts of money on their merch and content if they got their shit together.

3031207, He was well on his way to being in GOAT discussions but ...
Posted by Brew, Wed Mar-24-21 09:51 AM
>I love Hi-Tek and I probably underrate him myself

... IMO he fell off once he got with Dre. I'm a HUGE Dre fan so this is meant as no disrespect, I just don't think Dre's sparse, minimalist sound was Hi-Tek's strong suit. So once Dre's influence got to him, Hi-Tek's once-lush and full-bodied sound seemed to get watered down, and his overall product suffered as a result I think.

It was almost as if Dre's perfectionism rubbed off on Hi-Tek, because his beats started to sound a little too polished as well. And while it resulted in some really, really good beats, they didn't rise to the level of his earlier, more dense, and even when not dense, more dusty/analog beats.

The run that team had from like 92-95 was something else. But Gin and Juice? It just knocks so hard. And it’s iconic. To me it’s one of many 10/10 beats on Chronic/Doggystyle. But it’s status puts it right up near the top IMO.

Posted by Brew, Thu Mar-25-21 10:54 AM
>that it sounds commercial to me
>
>It just doesn't define that west coast g-funk sound IMO

^^ I think it *does* define it, or exemplify it.

But I'm also with you that in terms of the g-funk singles released by Death Row from Chronic, Doggystyle, et al, Gin & Juice is probably on the low end of the totem pole.

>even commercial hits like aint nuthin but a g thang and Dre
>Day still sound dope af to me

AGREED. Let Me Ride, too. Doggy Dogg World. Even What's My Name. All those beats still go hard as fuck.

Gin & Juice would probably be the last g-funk single that I'd actively choose to listen to at this point. Besides maybe Regulate. And in both songs' cases it's partly because of how overplayed they were, as you said.

I don't think any of the other songs we are naming got quite the play that G&J and Regulate did and do.
3031371, you're right on this actually...it is a vintage g-funk beat

We all know how dope Dilla is. But the mix on the drums on Pause is absolutely incredible. And the beat has enough space to just let those drums LIVE. One of my go-to tracks when I want to test an audio system.

3031249, It’s impossible. You gotta go with different categories.
Posted by soulfunk, Wed Mar-24-21 03:30 PM
Pause has gotta be his best mixed beat. And by mixed I don’t even mean just the individual tracks - every sampled drum sound is sitting in it’s own sonic space PERFECTLY. Dr. Dre level drum mix.

Little Brother has got to be his best chopped sample.

Then you gotta go best “song”, best use of live instruments, etc...

When I first heard this remix on Stretch & Bobbito one day, I was blown away how dope this was, that beat is way better than Buckwild's original version, Saalam Remi was killin' it with hip-hop & reggae remixes in the mid 90's.

"Fast Life (Norfside Remix)": https://youtu.be/sTiwlYvbXkk

1. Norfside
2. VR
3. Buck
4. LP version

3031638, You are WILDIN!
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Apr-06-21 04:37 PM
Guess I’ll have to claim preference here.

That Buckwild beat is my absolutely favorite type of hip-hop. Buckwild, Beatminaz, some Pete Rock, Erick Sermon.

Those type of beats are it for me.

Subtle greatness that allows the MC to shine.

I love a great sample but I prefer for it to not be the highlight of the track.

Beats like the Buckwild Remix, shit, his remix to Cmon Wit The Git Down, OC’s What I Represent...Pete’s Respiration remix, Leflah Leflaur..., Funkorama

Those type of subtle joints with hard drums is where it’s at for me.

That’s my pocket.
3031614, Lord Finesse feat. OC & KRS-One "Brainstorm/PSK (No Gimmicks Remix)"
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Apr-05-21 08:05 PM
This version is way better than the original "No Gimmicks" joint but this is basically a part two cause the both have different beat and lyrics; anyway I like how spacey but menacing the beat is, perfect for freestylin' to.

This joint was the party starter, when this came on in the club you had to get up and dance or something, this was also the start of "party break" type records; even though they did do a version with them rappin' on it, this version was the one everyone knew as that joint.
