3030808, New Release Friday - 2021-03-19

Pretty big day! Just a few off the top:

Benny the Butcher - Plugs 2

Kota and Statik Selektah (!) - To Kill a Sunrise (had no idea this was on the way)

Joyce Wrice - Overgrown

Lana Del Rey - Chemtrails

Some interesting looking singles, too: new Hiatus, Tune-Yards, Nick Hakim

What's everyone looking for? Favorites from the last few weeks?

April + VISTA
Pit Of My Dreams
https://aprilandvista.bandcamp.com/album/pit-of-my-dreams

I just learned about this due like last week so maybe someone else
can talk about who they are, etc.
I copped their first EP last week and I dig that.
This is their latest.

Figmore
Jumbo Street
https://freshselects.bandcamp.com/album/jumbo-street

This is from the Fresh Slects label (okp connected too),
and lately they can't miss. I've copped a lot of the stuff
from their label and their collective of artists is work checking out.

3031383, thanks for both of these!

Both are new to me. Good to see Fresh Selects is going strong, too -- good reminder to support.

3030817, donwill - space

going to check it out next

cypress hill has a single produced by black milk, champion sound. dope beat, okay everything else lol i hope black milk is going to produce more of their songs or that they will work with similar producers at least.

IDK single was cool

Kota is dope, gotta see if it comes down with replays but loved it.

benny and joyce albums are both really good to me.

its nice to have multiple dope releases in one day.

I was a little underwhelmed with that donwill ep but will probably come back to it for another spin.

need to check this out. Just realized the Black Milk hasn't released a solo outing since 2019's DiVE either -- maybe we'll get one this year.

3031098, that Kota lp

Definitely recommended! Kota's stepped up his rapping here and I feel like he's hitting a new stride. I kind of wish he'd recapture some of the diversity of subject matter that made FOTO so engaging and I still feel like he could switch up his energy a bit, but in terms of pure skill, there's a lot to admire here. He sounds really good over Statik's beats and there are quite a few verses where he really locks it in.

Honestly, the only glaring flaws are 1) Go Now (which is just sort of boring/trite) and 2) although he's rapping great on Wolves, the beat itself is surprisingly drab.

First standouts for me are The Cold and Sunrise but honestly the run from What Ya Sayin through the end is really really good.

Never was really up on him. I heard him in passing son Statik and Terms albums, but when I put this on yesterday...sheesh. Going to deep dive on him now.

>Going to deep dive on him now.

He's one of my favorites from the last few years, easy. He's can be a bit hard to like sometimes because he admittedly has a pretty defined lane that he rides in lyrically (both in content and style) and starts to sound the same from song to song after a while...

but when he's on it, he's really on it. My recommendation for his best work (from what I've heard) is FOTO, esp. the first half. Each song on that album had a feeling of a mini-story, the album as a whole very coherent around a loose theme of place and movement. I think that helped him focus his lyricism and it came through. Great production, too.

This record with Statik might actually come in for the second spot. Then the Lyrics to Go EPs.

He had a full-length last year that didn't really hit for me but I'll probably go back to it soon and reassess. His features on other folks shit have been hit or miss for me too. He's best when he's locked in on his own stuff.

Mostly R&B as I haven't finished going through the weeks releases and really got to the hip-hop stuff yet but here's what else I dug...

Zo! & Tall Balck Guy - Hold My Hand ft Phonte, Darrien Brockington & Musinah

Myles Sanko - Memories of Love

I can't beleive I'm typing this but...

Justin Bieber - Peaches ft Daniel Ceaser & Giveon (only listened becausse of the Daniel Caeser feature but this is kinda fire)

Raquel Rodriguez - Read the Room EP

She did a facebook and youtube livestream of the release "party" for this with her band and she SMASHED it. Sounded flawless, comes off very real. I'm becoming a huge fan, she's building a nice catalog. No misses.

Reel People - Deja Vu ft Raheem Devaughn

Missed this - thanks!

Haha, it's ok -- I haven't checked yet but will at some point based on both those features. Bieber comes through sometimes; I really don't know his stuff at all but I can think of a number of features that made me think twice about him (Chance's Juke Jam, for one).

>Raquel Rodriguez - Read the Room EP

New name for me - what's your favorite song/record from her?

Sorry I missed your reply, "Read the Room", "Undone", and "Mile High". I'm still familiarizing myself with her catalog so I don't know the names of many others off the top.
3032178, no worries

Haven't listened to it yet but I liked their album from last year a lot.
