3030645, The “don’t let the blog era mixtapes/free albums disappear” post
Posted by DJR, Sun Mar-07-21 11:39 PM
There’s a whole lot of strong projects from the late 00s-early 10s that aren’t available on streaming services, and aren’t available for purchase. Or if they are, it’s not in their original form. Unless you’ve got those files you downloaded back then or somebody puts them up on YouTube, those albums/mixtapes(in many cases: free albums) are basically gone.

Let’s talk about the best ones, and keep them from being forgotten.
3030646, Big KRIT - KRIT Wuz Here
Posted by DJR, Sun Mar-07-21 11:46 PM
Yeah, they just recently put a version of this on streaming services. But some of the best songs are missing, and it’s got some new songs. Not the same. This was a classic album.

3030730, also Return of 4Eva and 4Eva N a Day
Posted by Oak27, Sat Mar-13-21 05:56 PM
3030735, No question, KRIT is one of my GOATS off that run
Posted by DJR, Sat Mar-13-21 10:20 PM
And he’s made great music since. Loved the double album. But those 3 named here?? Amazing.
3030737, He lost me completely after his first few official albums
Posted by Oak27, Sun Mar-14-21 08:24 AM
but 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time brought me right back in. Probably my second favorite behind KRIT Wuz Here. One of the few double albums in hip hop that doesn't long overstay its welcome.
3030738, Might be the best double album in hip hop
Posted by DJR, Sun Mar-14-21 10:12 AM
I surprisingly really like his most recent album too. I say surprisingly, because when I saw he wasn’t doing the beats I was concerned. But I ended up really liking it.
3033402, I play that one from top to bottom.
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Jul-13-21 02:15 PM
it's a good one.

I got into KRIT at It's Better This Way. 86 was my shit.
3030647, King Mez/Khrysis - King’s Khrysis
Posted by DJR, Sun Mar-07-21 11:48 PM
Wish there was more material from Mez out there. This was just a can’t miss with those two. Still love this one:

3030648, Clipse / Re-Up Gang - We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 2
Posted by topaz, Mon Mar-08-21 05:43 AM
The other volumes were cool as well, but Vol. 2 is probably my favourite mixtape of all time, all four of them sounded so hungry on this.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyQ4SuOODjoWUAZ3e_AbZecLaIAJ1eIQ7

Recently I was actually thinking about the mixtapes from this era as well, and how it's a shame that most of them aren't on streaming services (for obvious reasons, but still), and when they are, it's usually missing more than half of the tracks.
3030664, I overpaid for hard copies of this. And would do it again
Posted by Amritsar, Tue Mar-09-21 10:51 AM
3030665, I'm right there with you. Vol 2 was out of this world.
Posted by Marbles, Tue Mar-09-21 11:49 AM

I know Sandman had a solo mixtape project (#1 Suppliya) a little bit after they all split but I lost track of him after that. I wish Ab-liva had got more respect too.
3030649, Rick Ross - Rich Forever
Posted by jimaveli, Mon Mar-08-21 09:08 AM
There’s a bunch of these once you think about it. This isn’t the best one but it’s the first one I thought about. There’s at least 4 or 5 really good Rawse songs on this that never made it to anything official.

That was Thought, Dice Raw, Truck North, STS, and P.O.R.N.

Haven’t heard that one in years, might have to find that on my old laptop, and put it on my phone.

That series made me a fan of Fab. So good. Always knew he could rap but never knew he had that in him, to make albums full of songs that I like over production I like. Soul Tape 2 and 3 I especially like.
3030656, good post
Posted by will_5198, Mon Mar-08-21 09:58 PM
the internet mixtape era was truly a special time for those of us who just moved to college and had T1 line access

I'm not sure which are available still or gone forever, but this takes me back
3030675, So many times I want to hear a mixtape from back then on spotify
Posted by DJR, Tue Mar-09-21 08:44 PM
but then realize it’s not going to be there. It’s kinda sad. A lot of classic stuff from that era isn’t going to be found by the younger generations.

can hardly find them anymore.

DMX over Ying Yang Twins
https://youtu.be/-XrWavSotps

Michael Jackson over Dead Prez
https://youtu.be/kG2GGejRv70

Nas over all Jay-Z beats (my favorite is Get Down over "Stop")
https://youtu.be/VgDFb_aApcI

and his masterpiece was his Jay-Z Black Album tape...don't see them on YouTube but:

December 4th b/w "The World is Yours" by Nas
What More Can I Say b/w "Unbelievable" by Notorious B.I.G.
Encore b/w "Lookin at the Front Door" by Main Source
Dirty Off My Shoulders b/w "Come Clean" by Jeru the Damaja
Moment of Clarity b/w "It Was a Good Day" by Ice Cube
99 Problems b/w "Born to Roll" by Masta Ace
Justify My Thug b/w "Nuthin But a G Thang" by Dr. Dre

all were fucking perfect matches...listened to this more than the Black Album
3036036, I used to/maybe still do have hard copies of a bunch of these
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Dec-27-21 01:47 AM
I'm pretty sure I had the God's Son mixtape (which is what REALLY got him noticed) and the Black Album remix, plus some others. I interviewed him for something and they mailed me a bunch. I have no idea where they are. Maybe it in a box somewhere around here?

Haven't been a fan of his albums since but I was really into this mixtape at the time. Might have to revisit it to see if how I feel about it, at the very least it should bring back from memories.

Another one from this era that I enjoyed at the time was Wiz Khalifa's Kush & OJ, but I checked that made it to streaming recently and I was not into it at all when I played it through.

Posted by DJR, Thu Dec-23-21 12:21 AM
and it sucks.

Those real albums are CLASSICS.

I appreciate his efforts. But nah. I can’t listen to that.

This is why this is important. Those albums on Spotify are NOT the real albums. And they’re not as good. If you’re 35+ you’ve probably got gold on the hard drive of an old ass computer, that will completely fall through the cracks of time over the next few decades. Don’t let this shit die!

I've been slowly going through my collection, searching it for holes artist by artist, and trying to fill them in on two different hard drives that were not 100% 1 to 1 when I started. So we're talking about me ripping CDs and trying to get tags together in 2021! I'm also trying to add these songs to a collection for my controller since I finally bit THAT bullet earlier this year. It is a lot of clerical work for sure but it can be fun when its not annoying and brutal!

Remember when going over 128 or 190 was like announcing to the world that you were trying to run out of space on a hard drive? Now I'm doing 256 and 320 without flinching! Haha.

This process has also made it crystal clear to me that Curren$y has a ridiculous amount of music. Sure, a bunch of his releases hover around 30 minutes, but still..it is crazy that Pilot Talk 1 and 2 came out in the same year for instance. But I cannot have Covert Coup, Carrollton Heist, or even Fetti trying to disappear on me. Oh hell naw!

I've said it before on here, but their shit knocked. Which is more than I can say for all the rappers from the era who were stuck on making ear-bud music.

Gone Fishin' was my shit. Their earlier shit was dope too.

And the Mick Boogie And Justus For All.

The versions on streaming are great, but streaming SBE is missing On My G and Late(it’s obvious why those can’t be included) and some of the skits. It does have a few extra songs. I appreciate both versions, but glad I have the original. Same with And Justus For All. The original has “Last Day”, Rise and Fall with AZ, the Kweli joints, and some hilarious interludes.
