the album he put out last year with king vision ultra is dope as hell
3030674, Good shout out.
Posted by High Society, Tue Mar-09-21 08:15 PM
Pretty good album from last year
It got some internet love, I wouldn’t mind having it on vinyl.
3030498, Pre-ordered
Posted by Kosa12, Wed Feb-24-21 03:26 PM
they are the best right now
3030512, Alchemist just doesn’t stop
Posted by DJR, Wed Feb-24-21 10:11 PM
3030522, these dudes can't miss
Posted by Stevie Lee, Thu Feb-25-21 10:12 PM
the only thing fucking with shrines last year for me was the woods/moor mother album

i'm convinced they're the greatest rap duo of the 21st century without even looking at the deep solo catalogs
3030600, always hyped for new AH
Posted by Stadiq, Thu Mar-04-21 12:32 PM

but I'll be that asshole and say the Alc thing does nothing extra for me.

I'm happy for the extra exposure it will bring them because they are certainly deserving of more love.

But I'd be just as/probably more hyped if this was a whole album with Messiah Musik, August Fanon, Segal, or hell Elucid himself on the boards. Or hell Muggs or El P.

Alc is dope but extremely overrated imo. I scratch my head when I see him on all time great lists with guys like Pete, Dilla, Madlib, etc. Nah. *shrugs*
3030605, I’d put him in that second tier all time though
Posted by DJR, Thu Mar-04-21 06:33 PM
He’s not Pete, Primo, but not many are. But once we get past the absolute GOATS, I’d put him right there with pretty much anybody.

He’s got such a huge catalogue, and he switches his sound up over the years.
3030630, I can live with that
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Mar-05-21 11:00 PM

I've seen a few too many "Top 5" lists with him on it recently.

like I said, dude is dope no question...but I don't regard him as highly as others. I know I am all alone on this island though lol

Happy for Elucid and woods either way and they always get my money regardless.

3030688, He’s way better than El P or Muggs
Posted by guru0509, Wed Mar-10-21 09:48 PM

Ok maybe not way better than Muggs but definitely better

He’s on the same level as Pete and Primo to me ..I’ve been listening to him since Defari Focused Daily days and he’s always held it down

>He’s not Pete, Primo, but not many are. But once we get
>past the absolute GOATS, I’d put him right there with pretty

3030689, Agreed on El-P
Posted by DJR, Wed Mar-10-21 10:15 PM
I’d put him in the same category as Muggs, though I generally prefer ALC.

His discography is deep and right up there, no question.

Speaking of Alchemist, recently came across his beat battle with Just Blaze from years ago, and cannot stop going back to when he dropped We Gonna Make It. Even Just and his crew were going crazy. 0:40 sec to 1:30 is basically my favorite thing that exists right now.

3030690, Not sure you can compare a dusty sample guy to el-p
Posted by RandomFact, Thu Mar-11-21 12:38 AM
they are totally different beasts. not sure alchemist even plays synths on his records. and el-p generally doesn't loop dusty samples.

can't compare the two imo. they're both great at what they do.
3031355, denotes asterisk

**never ever ever take any opinion of this poster seriously. the same level as pete and preem. if i was a mod i'd delete your fucking account
3031406, Erase that band camp link . No one here cares.
Posted by guru0509, Fri Mar-26-21 07:02 PM
Shit trash
your boat has sailed

Hope you get a hot meal from somewhere

3031426, hahaha
Posted by howardlloyd, Sat Mar-27-21 10:03 AM
youre a white boy who said alchemist is on the same level as pete/preem

again..you not liking my 20 years old work is actually a compliment

3031304, out there
Posted by fontgangsta, Thu Mar-25-21 08:24 AM
and spectacular
3031306, honestly
Posted by fontgangsta, Thu Mar-25-21 08:45 AM
im more of an elucid fan than an A&H fan
Woods has never done much for me
but over these ALC beats im fucking w him way more
3031323, first single is out on bandcamp and it's everything i expected
Posted by Stevie Lee, Thu Mar-25-21 12:48 PM
zero chance this won't be an instant classic for me. i'm very happy that elucid allowed his lyrics to be transcribed for the CD version this time

https://armandhammer.bandcamp.com/album/haram
3031324, i think thats the best track on the record
Posted by fontgangsta, Thu Mar-25-21 12:51 PM
3031325, it's a high peak
Posted by Stevie Lee, Thu Mar-25-21 12:59 PM
i feel like i pick a new best track off their albums every time i listen to them, especially shrines and paraffin
3031335, alchemist is
Posted by howardlloyd, Thu Mar-25-21 02:43 PM
good but he's also one of the most overrated all time.

the no drum style is a snooze fest... shit is anti-hip hop

woods is so nice it dont matter
3031336, Oh god couldn't agree more. Nothing worse.
Posted by Brew, Thu Mar-25-21 02:45 PM
>the no drum style is a snooze fest... shit is anti-hip hop
3031347, confused like, "how it aint no drums in the beat?" (c) woods
Posted by Stevie Lee, Thu Mar-25-21 04:28 PM
3031348, what is pro-hip hop then? i'd love to read a list of attributes
Posted by bearfield, Thu Mar-25-21 04:59 PM
>the no drum style is a snooze fest... shit is anti-hip hop
3031354, damn even folks who don't
Posted by howardlloyd, Thu Mar-25-21 06:43 PM
know anything...

knows it started with breakbeats
3031350, My take on it is this...
Posted by Anonymous, Thu Mar-25-21 05:13 PM
These dudes need to know when enough is enough.

When Roc Marciano did it, that shit was dope and something new.

But after the 12th album of the same shit, it’s fucking OLD.

They need to switch that shit up.

They can come back to it if they want but damn.

Album after album ain’t no different than commercial artists who make the same bullshit.

A gimmick is a gimmick.
3031358, What albums are we talking about here?
Posted by DJR, Thu Mar-25-21 07:25 PM
Last few Alchemist full length projects that come to mind are Boldy James - Price of Tea in China, Alfredo with Gibbs, and Conway - Lulu.

None of those albums sound alike to me, and most of the songs have drums - and the drums usually knock.
3031367, nah those albums did sound similar
Posted by Stadiq, Thu Mar-25-21 10:38 PM
and were all fairly flat- especially the drums if you want to get into details.

Alfredo was disappointing and his Boldly James album was the least interesting Boldly James album released that year.

Alc really has that white boy curve working for him, I'll give him that. A 6 or 7 release is graded as an 8 or a 9 cuz its him.

It really has gotten to the point where dudes see his name and decide its dope without listening.

And I'm not even a hater of drumless hip hop, etc.

I just don't get the *amount* of love Alc gets. Only explanation I can come up with is the curve. He's dope, cool, whatever...but I wouldn't even have him top 10 TODAY. *shrugs*
3031380, RE: nah those albums did sound similar

>Alc really has that white boy curve working for him, I'll give
>him that. A 6 or 7 release is graded as an 8 or a 9 cuz its

exactly
3031411, I don’t really hear it....Alfredo was it’s own thing
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-26-21 08:52 PM
Lulu had that eery, unsettling energy throughout.

There were definitely a few on the Boldy James that had a similar sound and would’ve fit on Lulu, but not the whole album.

I love all 3 of those projects too, so I’m enjoying what Alc’s doing.
3031452, RE: Alfredo was the exception for me
Posted by rmcphedr, Mon Mar-29-21 04:46 AM
but I broadly agree...

and this is coming from a white boy haha

the roc no drums thing was cool at first, but I am well over it. remember those old UN / PR joints where roc SAVAGED THEM?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAQYvUmJoTw
3031407, Agreed, I don't even listen to roc anymore bc of that

Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon Mar-29-21 09:15 AM
...ALC can be super dope ..but i'm not big into the "experimental" stuff that he & mugs have been doing lately

3031376, yeah, they did it again.
Posted by Stevie Lee, Fri Mar-26-21 12:01 AM
3031388, another excellent album
Posted by Kosa12, Fri Mar-26-21 10:35 AM
that's 5 in a row. these guys are really one of the best period.
3031414, definitely but to be fair
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Mar-26-21 09:51 PM

that ship sailed for me a while ago.

Because I'm mostly a rap head, I wonder if other genres struggle to crown new greats too.

These guys are all time. All fucking time. I'm as old and dustry/angry as anyone here (well, almost). The current NBA is trash cuz no defense. I want to buy the physical. Back in my day. Etc etc.

But these dues are all time greats.

The order? *shrug* I defer to one's personal taste, but they are on the list.

3031401, Are these typical current-day Alchemist beats?
Posted by stylez dainty, Fri Mar-26-21 03:47 PM
Was surprised by how much this fits in with their other stuff, as opposed as a major departure in sonics. Haven't really checked for Alchemist in a while just because of the type of rappers he tends to work with not being my personal taste.
3031402, Dope
Posted by Ishwip, Fri Mar-26-21 05:34 PM
Idk guys, "sleepy" Alc, minimal/no drums, smoove loops does it for me.

woods and ELUCID kilt it.

__
I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

Allied State of the National Electric Beat Treaty Organization (NEBTO)
3031403, yeah the loops do all the work. big drums aren't needed
Posted by bearfield, Fri Mar-26-21 05:56 PM
i think the folks in the anti-anti-drum association in this thread have trouble determining where the bars begin and end without BIG LOUD 90S SNARES on the 2 and 4
3031415, LMFAO
Posted by Anonymous, Fri Mar-26-21 10:24 PM
You got me.

I just can’t figure out where the bar is.
3031404, I mean, no one would mistake it for Timbaland, but theres drums on this
Posted by stylez dainty, Fri Mar-26-21 06:06 PM
Two or three songs with little to no drums out of 14 tracks. Maybe it feels like there's less percussion then there is because of the slow tempos?
3031427, smh
Posted by howardlloyd, Sat Mar-27-21 10:11 AM
go listen to the classic albums... most of the loops have "drums" but soul, jazz, rock and r&b usually have the level of the drums WAAAY lower than how a hip hop record would be mixed...

so hip hop producers would LAYER their own drums on top of loops and chops so that it thumps.

these "beats" have just the drums from the loop or chop that they are using

and thats why it seems like its "less percussion"... because the drums are just not there compared to hip hop drums

kinda like how black guys say white girls have no ass. technically they do have an ass, just not compared to the sistas
3031428, FYI: I know the classics. I've heard every Drake album
Posted by stylez dainty, Sat Mar-27-21 10:18 AM
I've even gone back to the super old school stuff like Lil Wayne.
3031429, RE: FYI: I know the classics. I've heard every Drake album
Posted by howardlloyd, Sat Mar-27-21 10:52 AM
yeah but u saying "they have drums" shows a lack of consciousness and context

3031451, Album is fucking aces
Posted by shockvalue, Sun Mar-28-21 11:05 PM
I’m still gathering myself. Listened probably 6x this weekend.

It’s the funnest ride at six flags this year.

3031457, Been listening a lot to this the past few days.
Posted by A Love Supreme, Mon Mar-29-21 11:50 AM
I love it but that is no surprise since i've loved every album of theirs. Beats are great and also the Quelle Chris feature is dope as hell. Elucid and billy are spoiling us really but i'm not complaining.
