“I got all types of works. and I got another plate. I got some Daringer records in the stash. The list goes on, man. You’d be surprised to know I got a whole J Dilla project … unheard J Dilla.”
3026753, So happy to see people still wanting to rap over Dilla.
Posted by phemom, Sun Sep-06-20 01:26 PM
I'm not even the biggest Boldy fan, but I think as long as the people who should be getting paid for Dilla's work are reciting The $ then people should still be going in.

3026756, Hope we get to hear that one!
Posted by DJR, Sun Sep-06-20 10:12 PM
Boldy already put out two of the best albums this year IMO. Amazing how timeless Dilla ‘s music is. I played Ruff Draft and some of the MCA album a few weeks ago on a long drive. All of his music still sounds good.

3026838, This album is really good
Posted by DJR, Sat Sep-12-20 10:19 AM
“Seen Everything But Jesus” is the standout to me. I keep playing that one over and over. Kinda reminds me of some like 2002-03 underdog 50 Cent - in a good way. It was good to see him incorporate a strong hook, without losing that griminess.

Really like “Jesus Khrysis” too. Khrysis is just a monster - glad he got a beat on here.

Had already heard “Front Lines” but I’m glad they put it on here. That second verse is too good.

Obviously “Spurs 3” is a cant miss.

I like that he kept the core producers on here: Daringer, Beat Butcha, and Alchemist and brought in others whose production brings something a little different but still fit the aesthetic. From the legends Premo, Havoc, Sermon, and Rockwilder.....to Hit Boy who brought it too. I’m a fan of Dej Loaf’s features too. That song was a great one to have near the beginning of the album.

Only song I’ve been skipping is Anza, but part of the reason for that is that it’s sandwiched in between two of the best songs, and content wise and sonically it doesn’t really fit at that point in the album IMO. That’s my only complaint so far. Conway is having a great year.

Conway surprised me here
3027058, A slight detour for that Griselda Records tank
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Sep-23-20 08:21 AM
Benny the Butcher isn't dropping a new album on the 25th. He's recording a new record with Hit Boy as of this week. I do know Gibbs will be on the record based on a clip I saw on social media.

I have no clue when it will drop.
3027059, Dang, Benny has been quiet this year (for Griselda standards)
Posted by Oak27, Wed Sep-23-20 08:46 AM
Was really looking forward to a new Benny release this week, but if there is any week to hear this news it would be this week because there is plenty of other albums dropping that will keep my attention anyway.
3027068, Yeah, I saw him tweet about that
Posted by DJR, Wed Sep-23-20 01:43 PM
Damn. Hope it’s soon. It’s ok though, because Conway made an album with some staying power. Really loving the beats on that one. He got a great lineup of producers and they all brought heat. And I assume Westside Gunn is still dropping?

3027202, No Limit Dropped 80 Min. Albums Griselda Drops 30-45 Min. Albums

As much I like how indie rap artists who making that non-trap style of music, much of their stuff is sometimes a little too slow for me (the bpms on these albums sometimes gets me unhyped to hear more).

Yeah these kats are releasing a grip load of albums but so is a bunch of other artists on bandcamp doing the same, it's just they aren't as well known as Westside Gunn, Benny, & Conway are, Boston is getting it's weight up on bringing back that gutta NYC sound, go figure.

Also like I said, No Limit Records use to have albums which the artists gave you almost damn near 80 minutes of music to hold you over until their next one, while these kats are making mini-albums & EPs that are pretty much forgotten about after a few months, maybe cause of the day & age of it being so much material coming out from so many indie artists these days, who knows.

3027203, Everybody was making 80 minute albums in ‘98
Posted by DJR, Tue Sep-29-20 09:30 PM
And everybody is making 30-40 minute albums in 2020.

That’s just the times.
3027205, 80 mins of predominantly filler and skits
Posted by Oak27, Tue Sep-29-20 09:59 PM
Hip hop albums in the late 90s/early 2000s were notorious for being inflated with a lot of garbage.
3027207, That I Will Agree With
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Wed Sep-30-20 04:39 AM
It's just these new short albums, they have fillers on them as well, it's like getting two dope songs, two sound-a-like songs of the dope songs but not as good, and the rest is throw-a-way filler.

Also on one of my fb groups, kats are arguing about Conway wanting to charge $100 for a physical cd that's basically an EP (the digital download is regular priced); I'm still mad at Estee Mack charging crazy dough for digital downloads though, the music is good but not that damn good.

3027210, Griselda’s been on that with the physical releases
Posted by DJR, Wed Sep-30-20 09:38 AM
Limited supply, and high prices.

If it works for them, good for them I guess. A lot of acts don’t even do physical releases anymore.

Yes. I have been accusing these dudes of 'stepping on' their music for a while now. Gunn has especially been stretching it this year. If he would've held on, he could've put out one crazy good album. Instead we got some jams to go with some stuff I might not hit play on again.

And I think they're doing it on purpose too. Luckily, I can go back into Exec Producer mode and make my own 2020 WSG album with the stuff I dig the most.

Album is cool, though not nearly as good as Pray for Paris or HWH7....or Conway’s album IMO.

Had higher hopes given this is his first solo on Shady, but it’s still a solid album.

Man does Nas have a wack ear for beats . This is the crown jewel of all the recent griselda releases

3027634, Ok...
Posted by cheesecake, Fri Oct-16-20 06:01 AM
But if you compare both albums both produced by hit boy, it’s clear who picked better beats. Maybe your just a nas stan?
3027645, or maybe just brought the guy up in 3 consecutive posts?
Posted by spitfire, Fri Oct-16-20 09:51 AM
Hit Boy on a crazy roll tho this year
3027650, Uh..you mean 2?
Posted by cheesecake, Fri Oct-16-20 10:36 AM
I brought him up twice, and to compare both albums as both are produced by hit boy. Not sure how that constitutes “trolling”. I’m left to assume you’re sensitive to anything critical being said of nas. Anyways, yes hit boy is on quite a roll

3027640, The least Griselda sounding Griselda album, and it's fantastic
Posted by Oak27, Fri Oct-16-20 09:20 AM
Let me make one thing clear, the subject of this post is by no means meant to be negative towards the Griselda "sound", it's just a statement, and if anyone who is less than high on Griselda is in this post, perhaps some inspiration to check this one out.

It's not Griselda-y and Hit Boy is on production. If you told me this a month ago, I would not have been excited at all. The Hit Boy part especially. While I enjoyed the Nas album, I didn't think it was great, and I would hope that Benny picked better beats.

Thankfully, he has. The production on this album is fucking stellar. A bunch of these beats give off early 2000s soulful Roc vibes. I could hear Jay or Dipset and a handful of other NYC rappers from that era (Fab, 50, etc) rapping over shit like "One Way Flight", "New Streets", "Trade It All" and "Thank God I Made It"

Benny is the best rapper in Griselda. While I think Conway steals the show a lot of time, and Westside obviously grabs your attention with so much more ease (whether that's good or bad depends on how you feel about Westside), Benny bar-for-bar has the best skills as a rapper, and I'm glad if anyone was gonna step out of the Griselda-zone and make an album like this it was him. He's the quietest of the Griselda dudes as far as releases, but you can tell he puts the most time into his projects.

I'm still only on my second listen so I'm not gonna rate/rank it, but this will no doubt be towards the top of my 2020 list and is easily one of my favorite Griselda projects period. I'm loving this so far.

3027644, RE: The least Griselda sounding Griselda album, and it's fantastic

Agreed on all points
