3025441, Name a good song that is too long.

I was listening to Hi-Five's Kissing Game this weekend and I was like, damn when is this song going to end?

What else you got?

*waits for someone to say Purple Rain*

There are not many songs that are *too* long to me...I also love disco/house so I'm all about extended stuff.

lol

I will say Im not a huge fan of the extended remixes like a lot of people are. The 12 minute or whatever Computer Blue is cool to hear a couple times I guess, but I prefer the short version cuz I ain't got time for that.

Love the song for the first 2:30 or so, but it's super repetitive. People realize it too, because there are about 3 different versions with the the length as the only change.

they could re-release the whole album as single edits

Production-wise, Timbaland did his thing on that album. But you are right... the songs are way too long
3025657, aw man
Posted by thebigfunk, Thu Jul-09-20 10:16 AM
That's what I actually liked most about that record -- on a few songs they don't have enough to substance to hang the extra duration on, but I felt like it turned most of the tunes into more than the tunes themselves.

It is the first album I thought about. They basically worked themselves into hella jams and didn't know how to get out of them. So they'd just keep going. And going.

It worked out better most of the time on FS/LS than it did on 20/20, but yeah...Spaceship Coupe could've been 4 minutes and it would've been ON.
3025846, I thought the length of the songs was the best part of that album

3025450, Imo 90% of the songs on Mecca & The Soul Brother fit this category
Posted by micMajestic, Mon Jun-29-20 03:38 PM
I don't see a need for CL Smooth to have more than 2 verses on a song EVER.

CL's tone is very pleasing to the ear but he wasn't saying much that I remember.
3025451, i like the tracks where Pete has a quick verse as well...

3025453, They'd probably get more recognition if CL was rapping less

All that rapping yielded very few quotables. I think he's a better rapper now than he was then.
3025457, Yea me too. Pete wasn't great on the mic but I liked his voice and flow.

3025458, You're Talking About An Era When Every Rap Song Had 3 Verses
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Jun-29-20 10:04 PM
Three verses were the basic model for any rap song, shit, you want to complain just think of all those early 80's rap songs which had five to six verses, or even worst when some rap songs had one long ass verse that was the entire song, what I don't like is how dancehall reggae artists do their verses and chorus without any pauses or breaks inbetween once in a while you might hear the beat by itself at the very end.

I thought C.L.'s third verses were great on some songs, he stayed true to the subject matter, but I will say on some songs he could've dropped a few third verses and paired them up with another song & beat and have an entirely new song.

3025479, 16 songs 77 minutes. 16 minutes longer than "The Chronic"
Posted by micMajestic, Tue Jun-30-20 03:26 PM
24 minutes longer than "Whut Thee Album"

11 minutes longer than "Stunts Blunts & Hip-Hop"

19 minutes longer than "Music to Driveby"

15 minutes longer than "Live and Let Die"

These are all great hip-hop albums from 1992 with the same amount of tracks or more.
3025463, Nah. I miss the three to four verses per song era

to have 3 or more verses on a song. He's no KRS or Treach or Wise Intelligent or anything like that.

CL isn't weak at all but I'm good on him after 2 verses

CL is dope as shit

And truth be told, you can apply that “one-dimensional” comment to most MCs period.

You either like their style enough for a full album or you don’t.

The Main Ingredient is longer than M&TSB and that’s my favorite album ever.

I gots NO complaints about him kicking 3 verses per song.

3025506, I am right here

I vote MORE CL!

Who cares if they aren't quotable, do his lyrics glide and slide in the ride, .. uhmm yup.

3025607, I enjoy Main Ingredient way more than Mecca & The Soul Brother

So I have to retract the no need for CL to have 3 verses thing.
But if you see my original post it was about Mecca & The Soul Brother. I felt like the songs on All Souled Out & Mecca & The Soul Brother were too long. Main Ingredient came together so much better it's excellent grown man rap.
3025610, But aren’t their songs long because of Pete?
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Jul-07-20 07:01 AM
I don’t feel like CL is kicking three 32 bar verses on each song lol

Their songs are usually a longer run time due to Pete adding in the bridges and taking time to shine at the end with the drops and scratches.

Which is something I always found dope.

I was just too young for Mecca & The Soul Brother as that’s when I was getting into hip-hop through more commercial albums like The Chronic and The Predator.

The Main Ingredient was my shit because not only was it insanely dope, but it also didn’t have that advisor sticker so that helped at the age of 12 when my parents were not trying to let me play other albums.

But I remember even then noticing how long that album was. 78 minutes is pushing it a bit. But every song was crazy and I noticed that the length was due to Pete scratching and bringing the hook in and out at the end. Not to mention the beat interludes.

And I loved all of it! Lol

I don't know anyone who stayed listening to Naughty By Nature albums past 1993... Pete & CL is another story.

3025619, Poverty’s Paradise is dope though

I admit that we didn’t like it when it dropped, but it definitely sounds better now.

That album has some bangers to me.
3025771, I still don't care too much for that album.

I love the song but he could've shorten it down to one side of the record, some records only had one vocal side being 15 minutes long, but there is also versions which had a continuation of the song being an additional 8 minutes long.

The first part has a long storyline then breaks into a few call & response chorus parts but when you hear the second part of the song you realize he didn't finish the storyline on the first part; but these were how most rap songs were in the early 80's, disco party style to be played in clubs to keep people engaged on the dancefloor.

I'd argue that it didn't need to be as long and in hindsight they could've done a part 2 over a different beat and doubled up on the success.
3025464, Another Star - Stevie Wonder
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jun-30-20 03:26 AM
Love that song, but it's 3 or 4 minutes too long. I usually end up skipping the end. Like why is the only version of the song the extended disco mix lol. Out of all the songs on the album, why make THAT one the 2nd longest? I never needed to hear the entire thing after hearing it the first time.
Black Man is slightly longer, which makes sense with him calling out names... it has purpose. "As" is the 3rd longest, and it's just ... amazing. Another Star was long enough at the 4:10 - 5:00 mark imo. It would've made the album flow better for me.

that beat is flames, but the energy of the rhymes fell off after rza.
3025473, Nah yo...that shit is perfect
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Jun-30-20 01:36 PM
Should actually be longer because I’m mad as fuck GZA only spit 6 bars!

Who the fuck elects to only spit 6 bars??!!

The track isn’t even 6 minutes long.

And I’m not sure how the energy falls off after RZA when Ghost and Rae bring flames at the end.

Not to mention that Masta Killa verse is classic.
3025476, the energy after Deck & Meth is COMPLETELY different

im not sure that its too long but it does have some dead spots. it instantly hits when it comes on then you start snoozing in parts.

it does have spots all the way through that hit though. you might snooze for a bit but then someone else comes in gets you back in it.

And I’m just not a fan of pairing a no name artist with someone like Nas.

And yes, Ye should always elect to not talk shit.
3025625, I agree although...
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Tue Jul-07-20 07:25 PM
I agree although the charm of that song was it's 'everything and the kitchen sink' aspect to it. It had the over the top melody, the way too big drums, and the bridge that didn't need to be there.

It shouldn't have worked but it did.

I fully expected an unlisted JayZ verse on that song. And then West kept on babbling! But I still liked the hell out of that song (and album).

Black Moses is your guy for long azz songs. Sometimes he'll bless it with a different bridge or something to pay it off. Other times? Nope...just Ike not wanting to get out of there cuz he was jammin too hard. But sometimes it works out. I'll listen to Walk on By in full most of the time for instance. I feel cheated when I stumble in to the 'short' version by accident.

Barry would do it too but I'm so pro-Barry up until around the album he made with Glodean (sp) that you can't expect me to admit that in writing! The album version of I've Found Someone..he literally says that he has no more words to say AND THEN HE SINGS THE HOOK AGAIN and vamps out randomly. Me and my momma clown about that every time. Her and my pops were huge Barry fans so they put me on. I still laugh when I think about how quick they'd turn off Love Serenade when I was little. All I'd hear was 'TAKE IT OFF!' then record scratch and onto the other side. I didn't hear the whole song until I was a teenager.

Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jul-07-20 10:16 PM
Been playing this in the ride, and I love the sound, but it should've been an interlude. It's way too repetitive in general but especially for a song containing musicians of that caliber. Will probably use my software to cut it down to about 1:30 or so.
3025652, Brandy "I Wanna Be Down (The Non-Rap Version)"
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Wed Jul-08-20 10:35 PM
The other day I was listening to the radio and Brandy's "I Wanna Be Down" came on and I was expecting Latifah & Lyte to rap but realize it was the regular album version without the raps and after two & a half minutes I was like okay this song is dope but without the raps it's just going on a little too long for me.

I thought the radio station was going to cut off the song early like they do with a lot of songs that go pass the three minute mark but nope they let it play for the full radio edit length of four minutes, I was so happy when the song finally went off.
