Cannot wait - Bittersweet is otherworldly!!! She sounds fantastic, the music is deep and rich, and the lyrics took me there - if the whole album is anywhere close it will be a release to be reckoned with for sure.

Agreed that "Bittersweet" is *chef's kiss*

Though, admittedly, I'm much more in love with the vocal performance she gave on the 'Colors' performance of the song. Her cadence and melodic phrasing there is so much more...precise? sharp? than (what I presume is) the actual studio recording version which is more...loose? ambient? Yeah, that's it I think.

Though I'll take new Lianne music any way I can get it, lol.
3024369, I’ve only heard the Colorlines 1 one but it didn’t sound live

please lord don't let this go down the path of her other two albums

3024392, too poppy

Her stripped down live performances are so much more engaging than the overproduced album cuts. Midnight from the Blood album is probably the most obvious example for me. Tokyo was my favorite song off of that album though. She is an indie artist. I hope she accepts it.

really like her guitar work on this one, especially in "Read My Mind", also her cover of "Weird Fishes" is incredible.
3025873, that weird fishes cover is bananas!!!

It's a really fulfilling record - totally lived up to the hype built by the early singles, maybe exceeded it.

3025889, for me, it exceeded it
Posted by Kosa12, Mon Jul-20-20 03:29 PM
Weirdly enough, and I like "Bittersweet", it's literally the song that made me check out this album....and it's my least favorite track on the album, primarily because I don't completely dig the piano-focused bridge.
3026242, RE: for me, it exceeded it
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Aug-07-20 07:43 AM
Listened to the original and the cover side by side a few rounds yesterday. I love how her cover isn't *drastically* different if looked at component by component but the whole thing comes off *feeling* like an almost new song. Little things, like elaborating/drawing out the weird chords at the end of the bridge.

And re-imagining the "here at the bottom" ending with a stacked chorus is wholly genius.

Can't get enough of it, and glad it's made me pull out In Rainbows - haven't spent much time with Radiohead in a long while.

3026139, See, things like this piss me off...
Posted by Marbles, Fri Jul-31-20 03:09 PM

I just listened to this album for the 1st time. She's a name I heard but I never listened to anything of hers before today.

As soon as I finished listening, I was salty at OKP. "Why didn't they tell me how good this album was before today?!? Man, they're slippin'!"

Because it's y'all's fault that I didn't listen til just now.

Seriously, this album is fantastic. I'm runnin' it back and I'm fairly certain it'll get many more spins. And I gotta put my people on to it too. It's one of the best of 2020.
3026141, i dont know why i keep waiting to get to this one
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jul-31-20 04:09 PM
not familiar with her but ive seen a lot of people post about it. i think ill get to it monday.
3026148, I remember us showering her with love for her 2 previous albums.
Posted by JFrost1117, Fri Jul-31-20 11:13 PM
I got into her because her first single was put out when iTunes was promoting a free "Hey, check this out" single every so often.
3026189, She sounds even better live...
Posted by Crash85, Tue Aug-04-20 02:07 AM
It’s pretty unreal...
3026196, I can cosign. Saw her live when she dropped the first album.

Really great talent and her first two albums are worth it if you haven't heard them.

There's a few where the chords sound like some 2020 Neptunes shit, and I love 'em. I was kinda hit and miss on the last album but this bangs all the way through.
3026208, I like this record...BUT...is it just me or...
Posted by supablak, Wed Aug-05-20 01:15 PM
Paper Thin and Bittersweet basically the same song?

NIce laidback record, but I’d like to hear her work with someone like Van Hunt, just to work out song structures a little bit more.

But Just Keep It Short
3026243, this is probably a stretch
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Aug-07-20 07:51 AM
but about half the songs on the record feel kind of like a suite to me, relying on similar pacing as Bittersweet, stripped-down guitar-led arrangements, and even bits of chord changes that are reminiscent of Bittersweet:

Bittersweet
Green Papaya
Paper Thin (obviously riffing on/lifting from Bittersweet)
Please Don't Make Me Cry (this one's probably the biggest stretch)
Courage

Part of me wonders... not so much if they were conceived this way but if there was a least a bit of intent or consciousness here. Regardless, I like how well they hang together, almost providing a bit of a thread through the album...

3026402, oscar jerome - "timeless" w/ La Havas
Posted by thebigfunk, Sun Aug-16-20 05:36 AM
Oscar Jerome (pretty well-known on the hot UK jazz/new jazz scene, guitarist with afrobeat band Kokoroko) has a new album out yesterday. Track 9, "Timeless," is a 6.5 minute journey with La Havas on vocals. It takes a minute to get there on the first listen but she absolutely blesses the song - it's beautiful.

(Listening to the whole album, "Breathe Deep," now - it's really good so far! Definitely of OKP interest... he's not a great vocalist but he doesn't try to be -- the arrangements are hot and he's got a lot of great players with him... worth a listen!)

This should have just been her song, not a feature - seriously, I might just be in love with her voice right now but she rocked her portions whereas the other vocals didn't really match and fell flat for me.
