3022519, Madlib named best producer alive by Complex

Yo I’m buggin out right now!!!

So many of us having been saying this since we lost Dilla.

Our man finally being recognized. All while staying true to himself and not selling out.

I feel like crying homies. I’m so happy for Otis.

The last 7-8 years or more he’s been making all his beats on his iPad 😳😳 “that’s the best piece of equipment you could have” - Madlib
3022520, Not here to knock him at all but...

Just want to open up the conversation.

Recently when I was discussing the “Mount Rushmore” type of producers, I struggled with Madlib because I wasn’t sure he had the classic albums output of the others.

And I’m asking to see what I’m missing because I do love his work.

Madvillainy is a lock obviously.

And I’m sure some would put in Piñata or even Bandana.

Are there other full lengths that he has to his name that can compete with the legends?

And when I say legends...I’m talking Pete, Preemo, Dre, RZA etc.

I guess some could say Dilla doesn’t either. Fantastic, Like Water, Donuts. What else?

Just opening up discussion to get more knowledge of Madlib’s work...not mad or disagreeing in him being named the best doing it.

I’ll add that Killin’ It but the Liks and Xzibit is one of my all-time favorite songs.
3022522, Yea I agree.

I'd argue Madvillainy is his only. I love Pinata and Bandana but I'm not sure we can put them on that level. At least not yet.

3022524, It was half his, but I always really liked Champion Sound

and that “Liberation” album he did with Kweli was FIRE. I gotta see if I still have that, really hope I do.
3022525, Yea I agree - loved both those albums.
Posted by Brew, Sun Mar-01-20 10:19 PM
But I'd stop just short of calling them classic/putting them among the greats of the types of producers he's up against on the all time list.

Quasimoto - The Unseen (surprised no one mentioned this)
Lootpack
Beat Konducta vol 0
Medicine Show #3: Beat Konducta in Africa
Medicine Show #5: History of the Loop Digga
Madvillainy
Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix
Liberation with Kweli
his work with Badu
Supreme Team with Kariem Riggins
No $ No Toke - thought Dilla did this all these years

tons of classic material
3022563, Aight...thanks for confirming my thought
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Mar-03-20 08:31 AM
Lol...again, not knocking him but what you listed are for the most part cool but far from all-time classics like the producers I mentioned have to their names.

And let me add that anything he raps on by no means can be classic.

Dude is absolute trash on the mic regardless if he’s just playing around.

The Unseen vs Guru’s performance on Moment of Truth.

Y’all joking right?

He ain’t even Group Home status on the mic
3022567, I'm with you on all these points
Posted by Oak27, Tue Mar-03-20 11:38 AM
When I thought about how to respond to your initial reply my response was going to be something along the lines of his lack of classic albums come down more to the emcees he works with rather than the quality of his production. My favorite Madlib projects are the ones where he's working with rappers I enjoy (Madvillainy, the Gibbs collabs, Liberation). I have no time for squeaky voice (or normal voice) Madlib rapping. If that's your thing, more power to you, but it's just not for me.

All that said, should he be knocked down when compared to other all time greats because he didn't have guys like GZA, Ghost, Rae, Guru, Jeru, etc rapping over his fully produced albums? Do we expect the producer to be able to elevate below average and average rappers to be listenable/enjoyable? Or should we strictly be basing our opinions on just the beats?
3022569, IMO...and maybe Complex could’ve made this distinction with the title
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Mar-03-20 02:32 PM
It comes down to beatmaker vs producer.

A producer is responsible for the performance of the MCs he’s working with as well.

A beatmaker just makes the beats and let’s whatever happens happen.

Maybe Madlib needs to be in the latter category which is why they gave him best beatmaker.

I don’t know.

Yeah Preemo worked with Guru and Jeru but he also made an album with Group Home that is classic status period.
3022575, Can't argue with any of that.

Admittedly, I don't care about hits and popularity. He makes beats, songs, albums I like. This has been the case for 20-plus years.

Happy for any kudos he receives.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

3022523, he's my favorite

his catalogue is so vast
3022526, This is what I’m asking...
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Mar-01-20 11:09 PM
I know he has a lot of work and was releasing instrumental albums every month but...

RZA has 36, Tical, Return to the 36, Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Ironman and Forever

And that was in the span of 5 fucking years!!!

Is Madlib really on that level when we are looking at output?
3022549, Alchemist.

...maybe, but he lacks quality control. When he was releasing all those projects, like 5 in a year, there was a great deal that should have been left on the cutting floor truth be told. Brother is still a great, just sayin...

3022557, Madlib great but I believe like 50% of the shit he says! lol

Homie HIGH level troller.

"you don't need all that equipment"

MULTIPLE pics of dude in studio with like 10 fuckin' samplers and mix boards.

HAHA!

That said, he is proficient at MULTIPLE styles of beatmaking and they all sound fantastic.

Hard to dispute the claim that he's the best beatmaker alive.

He is.
3022565, Were they asleep when he dropped 15 CDs in 2010?
Posted by OKdamn, Tue Mar-03-20 11:18 AM
3022570, this alone
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Tue Mar-03-20 04:34 PM
i don't know of any producer who has done something like that

high jazz
advanced jazz

3022696, Dont know why some folks don’t believe the iPad thing
Posted by cbk, Mon Mar-09-20 10:46 PM
I mean yeah, he had all that gear in those pics from that Behind The Beat book.

But that was like 17-18 years ago! Back when he lived in Wolf’s bomb shelter.

A little after that he’d been making most of his stuff with just a 303, portable turntable, and a cassette deck (seen on that during that Brazil trip)—which would produce most (or all?) of Madvilliany.

An iPad can do pretty much everything all that gear at Wolf’s house can do. Probably more. There are SO MANY apps for recording, chopping, sampling, composing, synths, midi stuff, shit even mixing and mastering. It’s a computer!!!

3022709, yeah iPads have come a long way
Posted by hardware, Tue Mar-10-20 11:43 AM
The processing power is there and software developers have stepped up with some really solid DAWs and effects units and processors. You can literally do pretty much every step you need to do. ITS A COMPUTER.

that being said, everybody aint Madlib, and working with the iPad is kind of a pain in the ass if you don't already have hours producing in the books or you dedicate yourself to learning a workflow for the platform.

The types of beats he makes work really well on the iPad. There's no shortage of samplers.

Haha, yup! That’s the difference right there.

For sure. I went from MPC to PT to Logic and then to iOS GB so those migrations weren’t huge leaps. But going from hardware to an iPhone/iPad??? Yeah that would be frustrating.
