Had never heard of her, or her producer Paul Gant (who has a couple albums of mostly instrumentals over the last few years) His music Kind of has some Sade/Stuart Matthewman vibes to it at times.

Which is good, because who knows when we'll hear more of him!

anyone else feeling this?

https://jheneaiko.lnk.to/Chilombo

she recorded it based off jam sessions on the Big Island, and used "healing crystal bowls" through the entire project, lol. overall probably not feeling it as much as Trip, but i have to say it cast a warm calming spell over me yesterday morning when i rinsed the whole thing.

I think that Jhene's music got much worse after that debut album. This is a step in the right direction. Someone needs to tell her that 20+ track albums are not that move. It's way too long. But I really like Tryna Smoke and 10k Hours.

3022974, Unfortunately I was one of the ones a bit confused by the 'Madness' album...
Posted by Af-1, Tue Mar-24-20 06:06 PM
His Brownswood years were his golden period for me. He's absolutely done some incredible things since those first two albums but that period was him at his best - the albums ('The Dreamer' and 'Blackmagic'), the remixes, the guest spots, b-sides. It all really connected for me.
3022986, I hated Love in a Time of Madness
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Mar-25-20 01:31 PM
Just a trash offering.

I have a similar view of his peak. I think it's Blackmagic through No Beginning, No End.
3022993, I really really like NBNE...
Posted by Af-1, Wed Mar-25-20 08:09 PM
but I far preferred the first half. The second half - as the jazz offering - to me didn't match anything on 'The Dreamer'. As a complete project though I really liked it, the people he worked with, the Spinna, Taylor McFerrin and Oddisee remixes, the iTunes live set.

I remember the promo that came out for 'Madness' and he talked about being inspired by artists including Ellie Goulding which was a huge record scratching comparison to make.

Oh yeah man: Oddissee and Spinna both remixed 'It's All Over Your Body', fLako remixed 'Vanguard and Taylor McFerrin remixed 'COme to My Door'. All were excellent! Should be available on iTunes I guess.
3023539, i'm enjoying this record overall
Posted by thebigfunk, Thu Apr-09-20 08:17 AM
The madness album was awful - the lyrics were terrible and the music felt like pandering. While You Were Sleeping was actually pretty good overall. The Billie Holiday and Withers tributes were really meh (how do you get to "meh" with such stellar material?) and kind of uninspired imo, especially the latter.

This feels like a bit more of a return to form and he feels very at home on a lot of these tracks. Solid arrangements overall. This will get played for a while.

Although I hate when folks tack on a "2" to something and call it a sequel for no real reason...

Highly recommended - she brought it on this one. I think the work she's been doing for the Sault records really shaped this (and vice-versa, I'm sure). Everything is hitting here: the writing, the arrangements, beats, melodies, everything. I would not be surprised in the slightest if this reaches into my top 10 for the year.

3024726, RE: I passed.
Posted by thebigfunk, Sat May-23-20 08:43 AM
I've been a bad listener and almost entirely relied on streaming the last few years aside from the occasional one-off purchase. I'm trying to be better and grab at least one physical a month - last month I chose Skyzoo's Bluest Note EP on vinyl, only to realize it was shipping from Europe (Italy, I think?)... between that and the exchange rate, I think it wound up being about 45 bucks. I think it was a limited pressing and I figured it's best to put that kind of money toward a lesser known artist in the long run...

I guess it's a weird calculus that you kind of have to perform with every release. I'm seriously thinking about making this my May purchase, though I'll probably grab Moses Sumney's "Grae" too, at least.

"too slow" came on my shuffle this morning while getting ready and I didn't recognize it right away - I was like, "Is this Rhye?" Checked the artist, listened to the song a second time, now back to the ep.

Not sure what it is but I really like this record a lot.

They've got a new tune, too -- "Lockdown" -- will probably check that next.

More Trouble - Marvin Gaye (Dropped April 3, 2020)
The album is filled with outtakes from "Trouble Man."

"More Trouble collects tracks from Trouble Man’s recording sessions, including an unedited version of ‘“T” Plays It Cool’ and an extended version of the titular song.
While the recordings were previously released on CD as part of Trouble Man’s 40th anniversary, More Trouble marks the first time they’ve been available on vinyl."

I copped the Chaka. Might pass on "More Trouble" because I have the original LP and the newer MP3 tracks from the 40th-anniversary edition. Only thing that might make me change my mind is the liner notes, which can be viewed on Discogs:

Gave this a listen last night and am already looking forward to listening again today. I've been wanting something musically rich but lighter in feeling, something that just sort of grooves but impresses at the same time... this is doing the trick. Lots of nods to influences here (one cut, can't remember the name, feels like Hathaway's Valdez in the Country; another cut feels very Stevie) but it all feels fresh. You can tell the folks who worked on it just had a good time.

Lost a little momentum at the end but there wasn't a bad cut on there. Thanks for sharing this.

I kinda forgot about her but she's released three EPs this year - 4, 5, and 6. I'd played 6 a few times over the last week or two and then just got through 4 and 5 this morning. If you're looking for something in the downtempo, sort of neo-soul-ish vein, these would be a solid choice.

I really enjoyed them, strong songwriting, memorable tunes, well-produced and arranged. Pretty diverse sound as a bunch, too. I think these will be in rotation for a while; I listened to them straight through and they felt like a coherent album.

"Back in '92, '93" feels like an early Jill Scott tune (in the best way).

https://demae.bandcamp.com/album/life-works-out-usually

looks like it is her 2nd LP this year alone...

'Life Works Out...Usually' is a soothing antidote to these turbulent times; a soulful coming-of-age story celebrating black joy, self-empowerment and life learnings centered around an integral two year period of growth and featuring appearances from Fatima (Eglo Records), Joe Armon-Jones, Ego Ella May and Nala Sinephro — all part of our close-knit, London-based musical community.

Sonically, it draws a unique line between the grit of inner-city London soul, interstellar Flying Lotus electronic rushes and new-age Dilla-isms mixed with flecks of London’s exciting jazz-influenced sounds."

but London/UK is killing it right now in R&B/soul/jazz. Every time I turn around I'm finding someone else from that scene that hits just the right spot.

Like this one! Hadn't heard of it but will definitely check. Thanks!

All the do (so far) is put out white people singing soul music.
I'd never heard of them before that Deborah Jordan record, but now it's her, Georgie, Nathan Thomas, and LaNote.
They're getting side-eyed real tough.
3028898, It's really unfortunate you look at it like that...

They're really incredible and inspiring people. I could list the black artists they've released music by, collaborated with and championed but I feel it wouldn't change your mind which is a shame.
3028439, Two releases from Nov 13th (British + SA)

Two artists I heard of through listening to a recent Gilles P show:

First is British singer + producer duo Andrew Ashong & Kaidi Tatham, who have teamed up to release 'Sankofa Season'. Real British soul vibes here that take it back to that soul boy scene of the 90's.

A couple of selected tracks:

- Sankofa Song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Deoc-53Xl0&ab_channel=StampTheWax

Second artist is Sepa Kapstaad, a soul group of one South African, a Swazi and two Germans. A couple tracks from their new album Konke:

- I'm Scared (feat. Oddisee) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbP_h55y-PU&ab_channel=MelloMusicGroup

Collab b/w Rob Milton and DJ Harrison that dropped tonight. I wasn't familiar with Milton before he linked up with Harrison but Harrison is one of the more underrated beatmakers out there.

This group is new to me - they're on mello music and this is their second album (I think) with features from Oddisee, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Quelle Chris.

Listened this morning and was really blown away -- they present themselves as a "neo-soul" quartet and that kind of makes sense (weird how that term is coming back into play again)... you can hear a lot of Dilla in the beats, for instance... but it's a lot more than that. Lyrics are really rich even when they're riffing on common themes; the band shows some great musicianship here (whoever is on keys is killing it); and they're not afraid to be a little goofy/fun without feeling gimmicky.

Kind of reminds me of Tank & the bangas but... I'll just say better and leave it at that, lol.

Def worth a listen! I have a feeling I'll be playing this for a while.
