Mysterious artist Slingbaum has announced his debut album, and it features some high profile guests. D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, FKA twigs, Damon Albarn, and more have contributed to the project. Slingbaum announced the record—which is comprised of only three tracks—via his Instagram account on January 15. “Today I humbly present my first record,” he wrote. “This is the result of years of work shared with the individuals listed with whom it was the greatest pleasure of my life to work with.” Find his full post below.

The album, titled Slingbaum One, is broken up into three parts: “Behoove,” featuring Erykah Badu and D’Angelo, “Strangers,” with FKA twigs, Nick Hakim, Oumou Sangaré, and Questlove, and “Morphine,” which features Damon Albarn, Bilal, Syd, and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. Slingbaum One is a vinyl-only release, and is available for pre-order now on the artist’s website. Orders should reach customers in May (approximately).

Damon Albarn confirmed his association with the project in his own Instagram post on January 15. Erykah Badu also posted about the project. Find those below.

Prior to Slingbaum One, Slingbaum’s song “Water Games” was featured on REVIVE Music Presents: Supreme Sonacy (Vol. 1) back in 2015. When asked about Slingbaum’s identity, a representative offered the following photograph:
3021605, I hate that I bought this.

Cause I don't know much if anything about Slingbaum.
But I'm a sucker for "one time only vinyl" releases.
And it has a crew of people I really dig so...
3021637, if i had some extra money right now i might have too
Posted by mista k5, Wed Jan-22-20 01:21 PM
pretty much just because of badu.

if it was more than three tracks i might have convinced myself. too much unknown to pull the trigger for me.
3021606, $40 for 3 tracks = you can kiss my ass.

Although 99% of the time I'd be in agreement...

I might be a sucker and give in on this one. That lineup is just too good to ignore, and although I know it will get ripped and distributed in non-official formats, I can get behind a truly unique, non-digital release...

I think. Or tomorrow, I might wake up and decide it's ridiculous and I can't support. Hard to say!!!

D'Angelo
Badu
Chris Dave
Ahmad Jamal
Bilal
Cory Henry
Quest
Jameel Bruner
Perrin Moss
Ron Carter

This is a hell of a group to get on your debut.
I'm mad now but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised come May.
3021610, RE: Ha! This was me.

Yeah, I decided at the very least to cop it for the the general archive. It can be hard to follow up with links and the sort after a few years.

Admittedly, it's a bit of a trip not having any real info on D's next album (whenever it comes) after the decade or so of steady info and hype on here for Black Messiah.
3021611, RE: $40 for 3 tracks = you can kiss my ass.
Posted by howardlloyd, Tue Jan-21-20 04:17 PM
you know how many jazz albums have 2 tracks?
3021617, If they're also charging $40 before shipping they can do the same
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Jan-21-20 07:50 PM
3021641, RE: If they're also charging $40 before shipping they can do the same
Posted by howardlloyd, Wed Jan-22-20 01:37 PM
I assumed it was an album

I agree with you on 16 mins of music!
3021618, "who?"
Posted by Options, Tue Jan-21-20 08:00 PM
the first article I saw about this casually mentioned Slingbaum as if I'm supposed to know who that is. I recognized those OTHER names, tho. I'm sure they figured that's' all we needed.

$40 +shipping sucks, but I love the boldness of this release. comin' out the gate all mysterious like with a vinyl-only project in this day and age is a *statement* that I can get behind. ...but I do wish it were cheaper.
3021621, So uh.....this is someone's alias right?
Posted by phemom, Tue Jan-21-20 10:33 PM
Like this is really someone we know right....when you got ?uest drumming and Bilal & Syd being afterthoughts there's no way you aren't someone notable.

Or you just threw money around....but even still that may not get you D'Angelo on a song.

Either way I'm in the boat of not paying 40 bucks for 3 songs....so I'll be stealing this one for sureeee.
3021635, feels like it's gotta be
Posted by seandammit, Wed Jan-22-20 12:21 PM
but charging $40 for 16 minutes (hopefully) eliminates any of the usual suspects I'd guess.

Feels more like a Yasiin move than, say, a FlyLo move, y'know?
3021643, apparently a photo of the guy
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Wed Jan-22-20 03:27 PM
is in that link. no one that i recognize.

and the release date is so far away, i'm intrigued.
3021623, Bought this shit without hesitation
Posted by cbk, Wed Jan-22-20 12:22 AM
3021625, Hol up
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Jan-22-20 08:58 AM
According to the website, the three songs total sixteen minutes in length. How on earth are three songs where the average song length is a little over 5 and a half minutes considered an LP?

Paying $40 for a normal 12-14 track LP with roughly 40-50 minutes of music is considered overkill. This is far, far worse IMO. I could somewhat stomach this if the vinyl were at least colored; this is just plain regular ole black vinyl.

Meh.

And this is even worse since I didn't see anywhere on the website where you can hear any snippets of the music being purchased.

A hard no (for now) from me, dogs.
3021638, wow i thought it being jazz the songs would be 10 mins each
Posted by mista k5, Wed Jan-22-20 01:24 PM
at a lower price i would still consider it.

if i win my superbowl pool and its still available i might get it lol
3021644, pretty sure this is a new Damon Albarn project
Posted by rl9, Wed Jan-22-20 04:23 PM
Slingbaum is credited playing the telecaster and all types of keyboards. Very strong hint that this is Albarn, those are his instruments of choice. And the release info was first leaked thru his social media.
Albarn is pretty much THE collaborator of our time, bringing all kinds of people together. He's a great songwriter, he got the connects and the money.
Seems like with this project he is bringing his favs in the 'neo-soul'/jazz camp together that wouldn't fit on a Gorillaz project in that constellation.
wish it was more than 3 songs but i'm all in.
the line-up is crazy.
3021646, and it makes perfect sense he's using an alias
Posted by rl9, Wed Jan-22-20 04:36 PM
judging by the replies in here. no one is mentioning him, even tho he is credited on one song.
if it's him, the guy is somewhat treading new water here. if this was announced as a new Albarn project featuring all these collabs many people would probably be puzzled as in "who?" or "him, that britpop guy?"
might as well keep it mysterious.
it also helps selling 3 songs for $40.
3021649, bet.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Wed Jan-22-20 05:46 PM
3021666, i think this is a really good guess
Posted by thebigfunk, Thu Jan-23-20 08:24 AM
I was trying to think of someone who straddles these different worlds. It is almost certainly someone we know as a producer already (but not necessarily only as a producer) -- I thought of Tip or Saadiq but they don't seem quite right.

~ i could still snort you under the table ~
3021667, i'd be very surprised if it's not him or anybody he's really close to
Posted by rl9, Thu Jan-23-20 09:55 AM
you can think of Albarn what you want but the range of musicians he has worked with so far is pretty impressive. you will have a hard time finding somebody that has similar pull, ideas and ability to make it happen.
just look at the names gathered on the last Gorillaz albums alone.

what's different here is not only the focus on the genre but also the amount of names all in 3 songs on some 'we are the world' shit.

3021758, ^^this was my feeling , also.

Does anyone know the differences between the "UNIQUE PRE-ORDER EDITION" and the newer edition created due to overwhelming demand?

Obviously, the new edition would likely be a different pressing but what about the artwork, songs?

P.S. Gilles Peterson is debuting the song with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu this week:

They could also be numbered on the sleeve or colored.
Who knows.

The track starts around the 15:52 mark. It’s mostly a spoopy Badu track. I enjoyed it. Nice keywork all around

so bascially there are a total of 3 tracks on this record? i don't like the way this has
been advertised, hopefully the music makes up for this charade.

Posted by thebigfunk, Fri May-22-20 12:58 PM
I mean, that's what was said from the beginning though. The number of tracks and runtime were pretty clear on the website.

Track is about 1hr and 50 minutes in if you wanna check it out.

Oh well. I knew it was a gamble going in.

Maybe it will grow on me with more listens.
3024752, guess i'm in the minority?
Posted by thebigfunk, Sun May-24-20 01:01 PM
I enjoyed this - it was a ride for sure but I was hooked for the duration. Absolutely *not* what I expected i vibe from the artist roster but I think that's why I enjoyed it - listened three times through, kind of wishing I'd bought the record now, lol...

3024904, The song Morphine is great!
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Sun May-31-20 07:22 AM
Got the digital download this morning.

The EP is exactly 15 minutes long.
Behoove is growing on me. I couldn't really give it the right time hearing it on my phone.
Strangers is a more digestible groove.
Morphine is the highlight of the project by far!
It has like 2 or 3 different movements within the song.
Loved how they used Syd.

So I feel less bad about paying $50 for the vinyl. Ha.
Yes, I essentially paid $50 for exactly 15 minutes of music.
But I'll admit it was kinda exciting to be a part of the mystery of this whole process.
Just as a music fan and collector, that was worth it for me.
I'm also the guy that would pay money to attend an MF DOOM show and HOPE it's the imposter. The experience means something to me.

3024908, I feel you..
Posted by spitfire, Sun May-31-20 11:46 AM
they do appeal to that collector feeling obviously.

behoove was a tough listen tho

i just checked and my paypal mail address at the time of order got deleted,
so i guess ill have to stream it somewhere. did they say when they were shipping?

3025094, I just relistened to Behoove and it still isn't great but not God awful
Posted by CherNic, Wed Jun-10-20 09:14 AM
Like I would never listen to it on purpose but if it came on a mix I wouldn't FFWD it.

How is the Bilal track?
3025116, Pitchfork article on how the collabs came about

...and a bit on Slingbaum's identity.

https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/who-the-hell-is-slingbaum-dangelo-fka-twigs-erykah-badu/

I've still only heard that one joint Gilles Peterson played ('Behoove'?). I originally pre-ordered the vinyl on some record nerd *ish, but canceled it after they flip-flopped and announced stores would get it too. guess I can't hear it all till it eventually hits YouTube. is that long section from Behoove where they're announcing all the artists involved part of the actual 15-minute run time?
