Where were you during "the blip" and who did you discuss hip-hop with. What albums did you bump and which were disappointing (cough--kritt--cough).
3017505, Nas is the only one I’ve gotten to
Posted by DJR, Mon Aug-05-19 09:13 AM
And overall I liked it a lot. A lot better than Nasir. Pete, RZA, Alchemist, etc....it’s a cant miss, really.

KRIT is possibly my favorite rapper of the 10s, but I just haven’t been that excited for this one once I heard he wasn’t doing the beats. Plus, I bought all those EP’s and made them into a playlist last year - I see some of those are on the album. I’ve already played those heavily. Still, I gotta check for it soon.

I will check for Chance at some point, too.

Just downloaded that Tuxedo III and got that ready to go for a long car-ride today.....
3017523, I been shitting on that Chance album every chance I get

Acid Rap is one of my favorite project of the '10s. Coloring Book was one of the disappointing records of the '10s and this shit is a new low.

Krit I listened to once and haven't yet felt the need to revisit.

Dreamville is probably the best you can expect out of a massive compliation like that. It's hit and miss.
3017537, awwww shucks, I really love the new chance record.
Posted by stone_phalanges, Mon Aug-05-19 02:35 PM
I thought it was a nice mixture of that crappy coloring book thing and the mixtape before that.

once I heard this I knew I didn't even have to listen to the whole thing
3017567, I can only shake my head at that.

To each his own but the chance really is great to me. His raps are on point, the music is full, diverse and happy. I just really hope it isn't true that people don't like this album because of the lyrical content.

I HOPE people don't like the rhymes. I HOPE that people think it sounds too much like pop music. But I am sooooo sick of anything that is un-apologetically positive getting hate just for that.

Please hate the beats

Please say Chance can't rap.

but saying it's wack because he talks about loving his wife and his faith? I just find that profoundly sad for hiphop and the hip hop community. It makes it seem like hiphop really is all the terrible things that have been said about it over the years.

The album is technically solid. His raps are fine and the production is rich. The songs are catchy. I can only assume people found the content a little too saccharine. I mean yeah it's a little sappy, but if hearing an album about happiness is this much of a turn-off, I honestly feel sorry for these people.

3017577, People love Coloring Book
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Aug-06-19 04:48 PM
So, I don't think it's necessarily about that. Coloring Book was even more religious in tone than this one. Just as positive. Lyrically, this album is wack as fuck, honestly. The hooks are wack. The beats are boring. Non-nonsensical features like the Death Cab for Cutie dude, like Shawn Mendes, like Randy Newman... or features who outshine him Like DaBaby, Taylor, Meagan Thee Stallion.

"But that boy advance gotta be bigger than Diddy Kong
I need stock and it gotta be Pippi Long"

"Hey  there, lovely sister
Won't you come home to your mister?
I've got plans to hug and kiss ya
I've  got plans to hug and hug and hug you"

But the real issue is that there's so little depth. It's "I love my wife!" And that's it. You haven't told us anything about her. What makes you love her so much? Who is she? Aside from the one verse on We Go High, we don't hear anything about trials and tribulations, doubts, realizations, fears... shit that makes us connect emotionally to the content is severely lacking.

And to top it off the album is long as fuck. Long and fucking boring.
3017578, nah.
Posted by stone_phalanges, Tue Aug-06-19 06:03 PM
"Stop. Drop. Open up shop. Ohhhh. Noooo. That's how ruff ryders roooool."

99% of out of context music quotes sound stupid.

This album is dope.

To each his own, but this album really speaks to me. I just fear that if 'lets go on the run' was about cocaine and you changed maybe 15 words of the song, that people would be feeling it hard.
3017579, Lol at comparing Chance to DMX
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Aug-06-19 07:31 PM
If you like it, you like it.
But there is very little depth to this album. Almost all surface level.
Nothing on this album compares to Paranoia, Cocoa Butter Kisses, Lost, Acid Rain. Nothing on this album compares Sunday Candy, Summer Friends, or Finish Line.
People are not feeling it and it doesn't have anything to do with the positivity of it.

And Lofl at the idea of Chance making coke rap.

LOL

You're not alone. I liked this album from the jump, and I'm genuinely puzzled by the blowback. People out there actually hate it. It's got me questioning my own ears.

i enjoyed the krit album but ive noticed his stuff doesnt hold up on repeat listens. we will see if thats true for it. im not sure any album from july really stuck with me.

been playing it damn near everyday. its has little more radio flavoring on some tracks, but I dig the production. his still spitting tho.

been catching up with all the stuff Curren$y has been putting out, too. He seems re-energized after I kinda checked out on him a few years ago
3017551, Okay, let's see:

Big KRIT - It's cool. He barely produced any of it, which might be why some of it just sounds "off" to me. Only song I'm REALLY feeling is "M.I.S.S.I.S.S.I.P.P.I." That one is extremely dope.

Chance - Yeah, no. I don't fox with him at all. Just not for me.

Still need to hear that YDM album.

Other new albums that dropped during the "gap" that I was feeling a lot:

Ill Conscious - Logistix
Kev Brown and J. Sciende - Drum Machine Tape Cassette
Donwill - One Word No Space
Koncept jack$on - Newport 1000s
Supreme Cerebral & Eloh Kush - Clark Connoisseurs
Crimeapple & DJ Muggs - Medallo
Showbiz & Milano - Boulevard Author
Hus Kingpin - Slime Wave
Berner & Curren$y - Pheno Grigio
Alchemist & Cool Kids - Layups EP
Left Lane Didon & JLVNSN - The Shoulder Episode 7 EP
Napoleon Da Legend - Bronze Saints
38 Spesh & Big Ghost - A Bullet For Every Heathen
