...the other joint is solid too ...can't believe this is their 7th album together

3016919, Got a good feeling about this one
Posted by seandammit, Fri Jun-14-19 01:48 PM
On a side note, I recently revisited the semi-obscure ‘Brighter Daze’ (their last collaboration) and it’s probably the best Murs/9th project beyond the first two.
3016928, Damn, I had no idea this existed.
Posted by squeeg, Sat Jun-15-19 01:35 AM
I thought 'The Final Adventure' was their…final adventure.

And def worth a listen
3016960, I just discovered Brighter Daze last week myself ...
Posted by Brew, Sun Jun-16-19 10:51 PM
... after this one was announced. Cause I thought the same thing, that Final Adventure was exactly that.

But then again I do vaguely remember reading about a Soundcloud or Bandcamp only release on here back when it came out so ... who knows.

Either way I've never heard it so I'll have to check it.

Who's the Soul Council ?
3016971, from wiki
Posted by , Mon Jun-17-19 09:06 AM
The Soul Council consists of Khrysis, E. Jones, Fatin "10" Horton, Ka$h Don't Make Beats, AMP, Eric G., & 9th Wonder himself. In August 2014, 9th Wonder announced Nottz as being the newest member of The Soul Council. In November 2015, Hi-Tek was announced as the newest member of The Soul Council.

3016974, Hm interesting.

Kinda changes the dynamic of the Murs/9th album relationship but I still kinda dig it, I think.
3016980, Khrysis, Nottz and Hi-Tek

though what is the process as a "council". Are they collaborating and having input on every track....

Great album. Love 9th's beats on this.
3017667, Just listened to "Final Adventure" and this album ...
Posted by Brew, Fri Aug-09-19 11:33 AM
I heard "Final Adventure" when it dropped and remembered not liking it. Still didn't like it very much this time. Definitely their weakest effort IMO. Murs focuses a little too much on the ladies and the beats are pretty weak IMO.

"Brighter Daze" is fucking fire. 9th's beats, as you said, are awesome and Murs didn't spend the entire album talking about girls like he seemed to be doing on FA. Haha.
3017670, this is a beautiful album
Posted by mista k5, Fri Aug-09-19 12:28 PM
more approachable than last years. i have it rate 4.5/5 after one listen and i think thats pretty on point.

unicorn glitter is the only song i probably wont come back to but it was worth a listen. SIN is a perfect song for heading into fall.

dont skip this album
3017671, Oh man 3 tracks in and I love it so far.

Posted by ry 213, Sun Aug-11-19 09:01 PM
We were listening in the car and she was digging the album until this came on. Had to skip to the next track to avoid a fight.
3017777, Yup

When that came on I was like WTF.
3017780, Why? What is wrong with it?
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Aug-14-19 09:05 AM
3018110, The beat is dope, but
Posted by Soletaker, Fri Aug-23-19 06:40 AM
felt weird playing this with the wife in the car. Too bad there is no instrumental of this.

I think someone else said that is why most people didn't like Final Adventure because this.
3018123, What on 'The Final Adventure' was similar to "Unicorn Glitter"?

3017729, Add me to the list of fans of this one...
Posted by Marbles, Mon Aug-12-19 12:25 PM

"The Iliad is Dead..." is a great album. I went back and checked "Brighter Daze" off the strength of this one and I wasn't disappointed one bit.

Murs is an artist that I tend to forget about every so often and I need to stop sleeping on him.
3017730, I like Murs a lot but he's highly reliant on good production IMO.
Posted by Brew, Mon Aug-12-19 01:32 PM
Like I love his content and subject matter generally (although I think he leans on rapping about women a little too often), I like his mic presence and he can definitely spit. But he also says a lot of corny shit, more often than I'd like haha. So if the beats are on point (which they typically are on these 9th collaborations) I'm sorta willing to overlook the cringeworthy lyrics. But if I'm not feeling the production I'm less likely to revisit whatever Murs project it is.

Whereas I'm more apt to keep listening to an artist whose rhymes are consistently tight even if I'm not really feeling the production.
3017731, I can see this...
Posted by Marbles, Mon Aug-12-19 02:07 PM

Sometimes he does say some goofy stuff. I think I tend to let it slide because it's refreshing to hear MCs let down their guard.

But I could definitely see how that stuff might not hold your attention.
3017732, Yea for sure ! And that's exactly why I always check for his music.
Posted by Brew, Mon Aug-12-19 02:20 PM
> Sometimes he does say some goofy stuff. I think I tend to let

His goofiness is mostly endearing, to be sure. Just saying if the production isn't tight AND the goofiness level is a little too high I'm less likely to revisit; and that's largely because I have other music to try and listen to.

But yea - I'm totally with you that an artist willing to show his whole self and let his guard down is always worth listening to.
3017757, Disagree. His lyrics and sensibility are right on par with the beats
Posted by Orbit_Established, Tue Aug-13-19 11:24 AM

He comes across as likeable, well-rounded, smart

Dope

>RE: I vastly prefer 9th's old style that everybody complained about.

That said I love this album and think 9th has done a lot of high quality work the last few years.

But yea - I also prefer his mid-2000s style that everyone complained about, and 100% agree that Murray's Revenge is the best of the Murs/9th collabs. The only one I outright didn't like (though admittedly I just heard it last week for the first time) was Final Adventure.
3017768, To be fair, from what I understand 9th only did 1/3 of the Beats
Posted by seandammit, Tue Aug-13-19 05:06 PM
The rest were various members of the Soul Council.

That said, I think this album + Brighter Daze are the best albums Murs has had in the past decade.
3018134, Agreed on both points.
Posted by squeeg, Fri Aug-23-19 01:47 PM
'The Iliad...' is good, but I prefer the grittier, vocal loop-heavy sound of 'Brighter Daze' and the earlier albums more. The new one is better than 'Fornever' and 'Sweet Lord,' at least.

Posted by dustin, Tue Aug-13-19 03:57 PM
I used to be a huge fan of him and his early work (End of the Beginning, Varsity Blues, Felt) and I think that's actually how I discovered these boards; hearing that he was doing a project produced entirely by 9th. Then around Murray's Revenge I started to lose interest. I owe dude a 2nd chance for sure
